Nolan’s hesitation after returning from a gunshot wound makes the action personal; the episode is less successful at giving its new rookies and the wider ensemble equal emotional weight.
What happens in “The Shot”
The Season 7 premiere, “The Shot,” aired on ABC in the United States on Jan. 7, 2025. ABC lists the episode at 43:02 and rates it TV-14. Its official synopsis sets up the main pressures: John Nolan is recovering from a gunshot wound, feeling the effects of age, welcoming two new rookies, and pursuing two escaped inmates with personal vendettas. ABC’s episode page and the network’s Dec. 23, 2024 schedule announcement establish those details. The schedule announcement gives Jan. 7 as the air date; an episode-page search listing displayed Jan. 8, so the schedule date is the clearest guide to the U.S. premiere.
After a few weeks away from work, Nolan returns to the job alongside Celina Juarez. They pursue escaped inmates Oscar Hutchinson and Jason Wyler, but the fugitives remain at large. Elsewhere, Lucy Chen starts training rookie Seth Ridley, while Tim Bradford takes on Miles Penn, a confident former Texas officer. A pharmacy robbery exposes Nolan’s reluctance to take a shot. Later, during a pursuit tied to a missing radioactive device, he does take the decisive shot. TheWrap’s episode recap also covers the Wesley-and-Angela relationship beat, Lucy and Tim’s competitive dynamic, and the reveal that Penn is living in his car.
Does Nolan’s recovery meaningfully shape the action?
It does, at least in the episode’s clearest character arc. Nolan’s hesitation at the pharmacy is not just another complication in a busy shift: it turns his return from injury into a question of confidence and judgment. His later decisive shot gives that thread a movement from reluctance toward action, rather than leaving the wound as background exposition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That arc is effective in outline, though the episode moves quickly from one crisis to the next. The action supplies Nolan with an immediate test, but there is limited space to sit with what recovery has changed for him beyond his doubts in the moment. Nathan Fillion described Nolan as “frustrated” that Jason remains free, particularly because Jason is targeting Bailey, in TV Insider’s Jan. 7, 2025 coverage. That frustration gives the fugitive chase a personal edge, but the premiere’s momentum is more interested in keeping the pursuit alive than in deepening Nolan’s response to it.
Do the two rookies feel distinct?
Seth and Miles are introduced through sharply different training relationships, which is one of the episode’s better organizing choices.

Seth Ridley and Lucy Chen
Seth is timid but dedicated, and an overdose call draws out a personal trauma connected to a high-school girlfriend. That moment gives Lucy a chance to train with empathy and judgment, not simply to shepherd a nervous newcomer through procedural basics. It suggests a potentially rich pairing: Lucy has to decide how to support Seth without letting his history overwhelm the demands of the job. The episode establishes that tension, but has little time to explore its consequences before moving on.
Miles Penn and Tim Bradford
Miles arrives with the swagger of a former Texas officer who is confident in his own experience. His disregard for protocol during a reckless pursuit gives Tim a clear reason to push back. The final reveal that Miles is homeless complicates the easy impression of a brash rookie: the confidence may be a shield for a precarious life. It is a strong hook for his character, though it arrives late enough that the premiere can only gesture toward what it might mean.

The contrast between Seth and Miles helps them register as more than interchangeable rookies. Still, each gets a defining trait and an initial complication rather than a fully developed first chapter. The episode’s plot machinery introduces them efficiently, but does not yet give either story much room to turn.
Do the fugitive hunt and bomb chase strengthen the ensemble?
The escaped-inmate thread gives the season an immediate continuing threat, while the missing radioactive device supplies a self-contained high-stakes chase. Together, they make “The Shot” feel busy and propulsive. The trade-off is that the episode’s emergencies can crowd out the ensemble material that might make those stakes resonate beyond the next tactical decision.

Lucy and Tim’s rivalry over their rookies offers a playful counterpoint to the danger. TheWrap reads their closing exchange as flirtatious; it also works as a sign that the two still have chemistry beneath their competitive surface. Wesley and Angela receive a relationship beat, but it has less room to develop alongside the episode’s many other obligations. The result is a premiere with several active connections, not a single emotional thread that draws them together.
CBR similarly argues that the episode’s many functions short-change significant character moments in its Jan. 8, 2025 review. That is one critic’s reading, not a measure of universal response. It aligns with the episode’s main weakness: the action is not empty, but it often has to carry character development in quick beats between set pieces.

What happened to Aaron Thorsen?
Aaron does not appear in the premiere. Nolan and Celina explain that he has transferred to North Hollywood, where he is happy that his colleagues do not know he was a patient of Blair’s. TV Insider’s Jan. 7, 2025 report covers the character’s exit and quotes actor Tru Valentino reflecting on his time on the show. The brief explanation keeps Aaron’s absence from becoming an unanswered plot hole, although it is another piece of continuity handled while the premiere is already introducing new characters and conflicts.
Verdict: an energetic launch with crowded character work
“The Shot” earns its season-opener energy. Nolan’s return has a usable dramatic hinge, Seth and Miles arrive with contrasting potential, and the fugitive and device plots create forward motion. But the premiere is more effective at starting stories than giving them emotional shape. Nolan’s recovery gets a clear moment of hesitation and response; the rookies’ vulnerabilities and the ensemble’s relationships receive briefer sketches amid the action.
That imbalance makes the title’s criticism fair as a judgment, not an objective verdict: the action is entertaining, but it takes up enough space that character development often feels like setup for what comes next. The episode leaves several good reasons to watch the season continue, while offering a less satisfying sense of who these people are becoming right now.
