The Rock’s demand for Cody Rhodes’ “soul” was a deliberately ambiguous storyline hook, not a confirmed supernatural plot or a promise of a match. On SmackDown on February 21, 2025, The Rock first asked Cody to be his champion, then said he wanted Cody’s soul. The clearest reading is that he wanted Cody’s allegiance and influence over his choices; The Rock later said the idea could also test whether fans would accept Cody selling out, potentially setting up a character turn much later.
What happened when The Rock asked for Cody’s soul?
In the February 21, 2025 SmackDown segment, The Rock approached Cody Rhodes and asked him to be his champion. He then made the demand more unsettling: he wanted Cody’s soul. WWE’s official video listing preserves the line in its title, “The Rock To Cody Rhodes: I Want Your Soul.”
The wording was intentionally open-ended. In a press conference after SmackDown, The Rock described the appeal as asking, “he wants his soul, what does that mean?” He said the story did not need to be about the WWE title or culminate in a match. That leaves the phrase open to interpretation rather than establishing a literal or supernatural bargain. (Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online, February 21, 2025.)
Three possible meanings of The Rock’s demand
1. He wants a champion who answers to him
This is the interpretation most directly supported by the scene’s dialogue: The Rock asks Cody to be his champion before demanding his soul. In wrestling-story terms, “soul” can stand for allegiance, access, and control—not just a title or a one-time favor. The demand suggests The Rock wants Cody’s success to serve the Final Boss, with Cody’s choices shaped by that relationship.

2. Cody would trade his principles or identity for power
The demand can also be read as a moral bargain. Cody could accept The Rock’s backing and the opportunities it promises, but at the cost of becoming indebted to someone whose interests may conflict with his own. Refusing would mean protecting the identity and principles that made him a heroic fan favorite. This is an interpretation of the premise, not a confirmed account of what Cody agreed to do or what WWE planned next.
3. It could plant a seed for a future character turn
In April 2025, The Rock said the premise was a “litmus test” for how fans would respond if Cody sold his soul to the Final Boss. He described it as a possible basis for a Cody heel turn “way down the road,” not as an announced outcome. He also said he stepped back from the WrestleMania 41 build after John Cena’s heel turn became the direction, so the soul idea did not have a confirmed payoff in that story. Why the line carried history from WrestleMania 40
The demand did not arrive in isolation. After Cody won the 2024 Royal Rumble, fans expected him to choose Roman Reigns, but Cody briefly appeared to yield his WrestleMania opportunity to The Rock. The February 8 press conference redirected the story toward Cody and Reigns. (USA Network, February 9, 2024.)
At WrestleMania 40, Cody and Seth Rollins faced The Rock and Roman Reigns in a tag match; the stipulation made the following night’s Rhodes–Reigns title match subject to Bloodline Rules if Rock and Reigns won. They did, and Cody won the championship match the next night. WWE’s March 8 preview laid out the tag-match stakes; a July 2024 retrospective reported the outcome and the event’s main-event pivot. That history gave the 2025 demand a personal rivalry and power dynamic to draw on, rather than making it a standalone supernatural tease.

Does The Rock have to fight Cody Rhodes?
No. The Rock said at the February 21, 2025 press conference that the story could remain compelling without the two men wrestling each other. He described the “rare air” of a storyline that could hold audience interest without a match as its endpoint. A confrontation was possible, but his comments did not promise one. As of October 8, 2026, the sources cited here do not establish WWE’s current creative plan or confirm a later payoff to the soul storyline.
