Dwayne Johnson’s first trailer appearance as fighter Mark Kerr looks markedly different from his familiar screen persona. ABC News described Johnson as nearly unrecognizable, attributing the transformation to a wig and prosthetic makeup. The trailer is for Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, a film about the mixed martial arts and UFC fighter.
What makes Johnson look so different?
The effect comes across in the overall character design, rather than in one isolated change: the hair silhouette, facial hair and prosthetic work shift the look viewers associate with Johnson. ABC News specifically cited a wig and prosthetic makeup. The trailer does not provide a technical breakdown of the makeup or identify individual prosthetics, so those details should not be inferred from the finished images.
The contrast is also part of the reaction. Johnson is widely recognizable from his public and screen persona; here, the trailer presents him as Kerr, a fighter with a different appearance and physical characterization. “Unrecognizable” is a subjective description of that visual impression, not a measurable claim about resemblance.
Who is Mark Kerr, and what is the film?
The Smashing Machine is written and directed by Benny Safdie and stars Johnson as Mark Kerr, described by the Venice Biennale as a legendary mixed martial arts and UFC fighter. Emily Blunt is also among the film’s stars. The official A24 film page identifies the project, director and cast; the Venice Biennale listing gives its premise and festival context.

Safdie described his motivation for making the film this way on the Biennale listing: “First, because empathy should be cool and second because I wanted this movie to exist as a memory for everyone who watches it.” That statement offers a glimpse of the filmmaker’s intent, but the trailer alone cannot establish how the finished film handles Kerr’s story or whether the performance succeeds.
