Jimmy Kimmel reacted to ABC’s cancellation of Roseanne in two distinct ways: first with a comic sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, then with a public appeal for compassion toward Roseanne Barr. His sketch imagined a continuation centered on John Goodman’s character, Dan Conner; it was a joke, not an ABC development. His later appeal condemned Barr’s remarks but sparked disagreement about invoking mental health in response to racist speech.
Why ABC canceled Roseanne
ABC announced the cancellation on May 29, 2018, after Barr posted a tweet about former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett. ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said the tweet was “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values,” and said the network had decided to cancel the show. ABC News Australia reported the cancellation and Dungey’s statement.
The revival had been a major hit for ABC. ABC News Australia, citing Nielsen data through May 20, 2018, reported an average audience of 18.7 million viewers. That audience figure describes the show, not the reach of Kimmel’s response.
Kimmel’s on-air reaction: a fictional Dan Conner spinoff
On the May 30 broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel joked about ABC losing a hit and offered a comic alternative: continue the series without Barr, centering it on John Goodman’s character, Dan Conner, under the title Dan. The premise was part of a sketch, not a real network announcement or evidence that ABC was developing a spinoff. The official Jimmy Kimmel Live! channel listed the segment as “Jimmy Kimmel on Roseanne Cancellation”; contemporaneous coverage described the sketch and its premise.

Kimmel’s later appeal for compassion
After the on-air jokes, Kimmel posted a separate message on Twitter. He called Barr’s remarks indefensible, but argued that angrily attacking her would help no one. He asked people to remember that mental health issues are real and said the Roseanne he knew could use compassion and help. CBS News reproduced the tweet and covered the responses.
Why the compassion message drew criticism and support
The dispute was not simply over whether Barr’s tweet was acceptable: Kimmel himself called it indefensible. The disagreement was about whether his mental-health framing was appropriate, or risked excusing racism by associating it with illness.

Writer Roxane Gay made that objection directly, arguing that mental illness does not excuse racism and that criticism is not the same as an attack. Actress Andie MacDowell, by contrast, supported an appeal for empathy while accepting the cancellation. CBS News reported both the criticism and supportive reaction.
The two responses at a glance
| Response | When and where | What Kimmel did | What it was—and was not |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-air sketch | May 30, 2018, on Jimmy Kimmel Live! | Joked about the cancellation and imagined a show centered on Dan Conner. | A comic, hypothetical spinoff pitch; not an ABC development. |
| Compassion appeal | In a subsequent tweet | Condemned Barr’s remarks and asked people to respond with compassion, citing mental health. | A personal appeal that prompted debate about how mental health should be invoked in response to racism. |
How the cancellation affected the show’s business outlook
The cancellation also ended a valuable advertising opportunity, but the available figures were estimates rather than realized revenue. ABC News Australia reported Kantar Media’s 2018 estimate of US$45 million in advertising revenue for the first nine episodes. Kantar estimated up to US$60 million for the 13 episodes ordered for the next season; that amount was not revenue earned after cancellation. These figures help explain the show’s commercial significance, but they do not measure Kimmel’s segment or its impact.
