What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes. In the United States, The Roku Channel offers a substantial free, advertising-supported catalog, and you do not need to own a Roku streaming player or Roku TV. You can watch through a web browser, the official Roku mobile app, and compatible Samsung, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and Roku devices. Optional Premium Subscriptions are billed separately.
What The Roku Channel actually is
The Roku Channel is Roku’s streaming service; it is not the same thing as Roku hardware. Roku players and Roku TVs are optional ways to access the service.
Its catalog combines three types of programming:
- Free on-demand: Movies, television episodes, series, and Roku Originals available without a paid subscription.
- Free live TV: FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) channels covering news, entertainment, kids’ programming, sports and other categories.
- Premium Subscriptions: Paid streaming services sold through Roku. A title appearing in The Roku Channel does not necessarily mean it is free.
Roku’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports more than 80,000 free movies and TV shows and more than 500 free live channels. Catalogs and channel counts change, so “hundreds of free live channels” is the more durable description. Roku’s consumer pages describe the free catalog at Roku Support and The Roku Channel overview.
Why the free catalog has ads
The free service is an advertising-supported model. Roku classifies free on-demand programming as AVOD and free live channels as FAST; both include commercial breaks. There is no monthly fee for eligible free titles, but “free” does not mean ad-free. Ad placement and frequency can vary by program and platform.

Paying for one Premium Subscription does not remove advertising from the entire Roku Channel. Each paid service has its own plan and advertising rules.
How to watch without Roku hardware
Computer or mobile browser
- Open therokuchannel.roku.com.
- Browse free movies, shows, Roku Originals or Live TV.
- Select a title and start playback.
- Sign in or create a free Roku account if the site requests it for a feature such as syncing viewing activity.
Roku confirms web streaming in its platform support information. A browser is the lowest-friction way to test the service before buying any device.
Android, iPhone or iPad
- Install the official Roku mobile app from your device’s app store.
- Open the app and choose its watch or mobile-viewing option when available.
- Browse The Roku Channel’s free programming and select a title.
- Sign in if the selected feature requires an account.
Roku lists Android and iOS among supported mobile platforms for its Roku Channel experience. The app also works as a remote and Roku-device companion, so features can differ from the television and web versions; confirm that the program you want has a mobile-watch option. See Roku’s Roku Originals page.
Compatible Samsung Smart TV
- Press Home or Smart Hub on the Samsung remote.
- Open Apps.
- Search for The Roku Channel or Roku.
- Select the app and choose Download.
- Open it and begin watching.
Menus vary by Samsung model. Signing in with a free Roku account can let you resume programs across signed-in devices, but a Roku player is not required. Roku’s installation guidance is at Roku Support.

Amazon Fire TV
- Open Apps on the Fire TV home screen.

- Select the app and install it.
- Open it from the Fire TV home screen.
Roku specifies U.S. support for compatible Fire TV streaming devices, Fire TV Edition smart TVs and Fire TV Edition soundbars. Premium Subscriptions are unavailable on Amazon Fire TV devices according to the same support page, even though free programming is supported.
Google TV and some Android TV devices
Search your television or streaming device’s app store for The Roku Channel. Roku lists Google TV and other Android TV OS devices among supported destinations, but compatibility depends on the exact model, operating system and country. Do not assume that every Android TV product includes the app; verify it on the device itself.
Roku players and Roku TVs
On Roku hardware, open the Roku Channel from the home screen or search for it in the streaming-store interface. Hardware provides a dedicated television interface, but it is only one access route—not a requirement.
What you can watch
- Free movies and television episodes.
- Roku Originals.
- Hundreds of free live channels, including news, entertainment, children’s and other FAST categories.
- Premium Subscription services that require separate payment.
Libraries rotate as licensing changes, and availability can differ by country, device and time. A title listed today may not remain available tomorrow.

Do you need a Roku account?
You do not need to purchase Roku hardware. Roku also says some Roku Originals can be streamed free without downloads, subscriptions, signups or logins. However, that does not establish that every title or feature is permanently available without an account.
An account may be requested for personalization, cross-device resume or particular playback features. Premium content requires payment and may also require account or provider authentication. Treat account prompts as feature- and title-specific rather than assuming either “always required” or “never required.”
What “free” does not include
- Premium Subscription titles are not included in the free tier.
- Buying a Roku player does not make Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu or another paid service free.
- Free programming includes advertising.
- Catalogs and rights vary by location and change over time.
- Some titles may require a Roku account, a paid plan or a separate provider login.
Roku explains how paid services are purchased and managed through its platform at Subscribe through Roku. In the U.S., Roku says Premium Subscriptions are unavailable on Samsung TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices, an important limitation if you want Roku-billed subscriptions rather than only the free catalog.
Regional availability
The device list above is primarily for U.S. readers. Roku’s support information says The Roku Channel is available on Roku devices, the web and mobile in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In Mexico, Roku lists availability on Roku streaming devices only. Features, titles and Premium Subscription access can differ by region.

Can any smart TV run it?
No. Support depends on the television’s operating system and exact model. Roku TVs, compatible Samsung TVs, Fire TV products and Google TV devices are identified by Roku, but that does not guarantee support for every television from a particular manufacturer. If the app is absent, use the website or connect a compatible external streaming device.
Do not treat casting, AirPlay or screen mirroring as universal features. The confirmed routes are the native app, a supported web browser or a compatible streaming device.

The app does not appear
- Confirm the device model and your country.
- Update the television or streaming device software.
- Search the official app store for both “The Roku Channel” and “Roku.”
- Try the official website in a browser.
- If the TV is unsupported, add a compatible Roku, Fire TV or Google TV device.
A login or subscription prompt appears
Free Originals may play without signing in, while accounts can enable resume and personalization. A Premium Subscription prompt means the selected programming is paid; it does not mean the entire service requires payment.
A title is unavailable
Rights, regions, devices and catalog rotations can remove a title or channel. Check another device only if the program is supposed to be supported there; changing devices cannot override regional rights.

It works on one television but not another
“Samsung TV” and “Fire TV” describe platform families, not every model. Compare the exact model’s operating system and app-store listing.
Should you buy a Roku device?
Buy one only if you want a dedicated TV interface or your current television lacks a supported app. Roku’s official player page is roku.com/products/players. If you already own a compatible Fire TV, Samsung TV or Google TV device, installing the app is normally enough. If you only want to test free programming, start with the website or mobile app instead of buying hardware.
Quick choice by situation
| Situation | Best route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop or desktop | Official website | For television viewing, connect the computer to the TV. |
| iPhone, iPad or Android device | Official Roku mobile app | Mobile features may differ from web and TV apps. |
| Compatible Samsung TV | Samsung app | Model availability varies; Premium Subscriptions are unavailable. |
| Fire TV | Fire TV app | Premium Subscriptions are unavailable on Fire TV. |
| Google TV or Android TV | Search the device app store | Check the exact model first. |
| Unsupported smart TV | Add a compatible streaming player | Requires hardware. |
The Bottom Line
The Roku Channel is free to try without Roku hardware: start at therokuchannel.roku.com or use the official mobile app. Expect advertisements, check your device’s compatibility, and remember that Premium Subscriptions remain paid services.
