Short answer: VLC and FFmpeg are not interchangeable. VLC is a desktop media player; FFmpeg is a command-line toolkit for processing and sending media. For YouTube playlist entries, yt-dlp is the documented intermediary: it can extract media and pipe a single video to a player, but the cited documentation does not guarantee gap-free handoff of an entire playlist to VLC. For a dependable local sequence, process the playlist into files and queue them in VLC; use FFmpeg when you need explicit control over stream selection, conversion, or output.
Which tool fits a continuous YouTube playlist?
| Need | Best fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Play available media with a graphical interface | VLC | A general-purpose, cross-platform player with playback controls and support for media files and streaming protocols. VLC project |
| Control media inputs, outputs, stream mapping, and conversion from the command line | FFmpeg | A media-processing toolkit that can read files, pipes, network streams, and capture devices, and write to output URLs. FFmpeg command-line documentation |
| Extract and handle YouTube playlist entries | yt-dlp | The intermediary for YouTube extraction; its documentation covers playlist processing and piping media to a player. yt-dlp README |
VLC can play media and broadcast prepared inputs, but it is not the YouTube playlist extraction layer. FFmpeg can process and output media, but it is not a graphical playlist player. Use yt-dlp for the YouTube-specific extraction step, then choose VLC or FFmpeg for the playback or processing job.
How to pipe one YouTube video to VLC
The yt-dlp FAQ documents this single-video example:
yt-dlp -o - "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaW_jenozKcj" | vlc -
- Install yt-dlp, VLC, and—if using the FFmpeg-backed variant—FFmpeg.
- Run the command in a shell.
-o -directs yt-dlp media output to standard output;vlc -tells VLC to read standard input. - Check the terminal and player if playback does not start. yt-dlp must be able to resolve the YouTube URL and VLC must accept the incoming stream.
The FAQ also documents an FFmpeg-backed stdout option for a single video:

How to play a playlist as a local sequence
For a predictable local workflow, have yt-dlp process the playlist entries into files, then open or queue those files in VLC. The yt-dlp README documents playlist extraction and playlist-aware output naming; its available formats and selection behavior may change as the project evolves. Consult its current examples and choose an output template that keeps entries distinct and ordered.

- Use the playlist URL with yt-dlp and select a destination folder and playlist-aware filename template, following the current output-template documentation.
- Let yt-dlp finish and inspect the resulting files. Removed, private, or inaccessible entries may not be available to download.
- Open the files in VLC as a playlist and confirm the order. If necessary, adjust the queue before playback.
Downloading first separates playlist extraction from playback. It avoids relying on a live handoff between each extracted entry and the player, but it does not remove network, access, or source-availability failures during extraction.
When FFmpeg is the better choice
Use FFmpeg when you need command-line control over which audio or video streams are selected, whether media is converted, or where the output is sent. Its documentation distinguishes stream copy—which avoids re-encoding—from transcoding, which uses more computation and can reduce quality. Prefer stream copy when the source streams already suit the intended output; transcode only when a format or processing requirement calls for it.

FFmpeg’s options and documentation can vary by installed release. Its documentation is regenerated nightly, and the project advises users of older installations to consult the documentation available locally. Check FFmpeg documentation for the version you have rather than assuming every current option applies unchanged.
VLC VLM: broadcasting a prepared sequence
VLC’s version 3.0 VLM documentation describes putting multiple inputs on one channel so the next input begins when the previous stream ends, and receiving a broadcast as an HTTP stream. This is useful for broadcasting a prepared local sequence on a network. The documented example uses local media paths; it does not show VLM extracting or following a YouTube playlist URL. See the VLC VLM command-line examples.

What “continuous” can and cannot mean here
A queued set of local files can play one after another, and VLC VLM documents sequential inputs for a prepared broadcast. The cited yt-dlp FAQ, however, shows piping one video to a player—not a guaranteed gapless command that iterates a YouTube playlist and feeds each item to VLC. Do not assume uninterrupted playback across extractor errors, network interruptions, unavailable playlist items, or YouTube changes.
YouTube extraction is particularly changeable: yt-dlp warns that site URL schemes may change and that a previously supported service can stop working after a site change. Keep yt-dlp and FFmpeg current, test the URL, review the tool output, and consult the projects’ documentation if a command stops working. yt-dlp FAQ

Troubleshooting
- VLC reports input or standard-input trouble: confirm the command ends with
vlc -and that the player can read standard input. The documented pipe requires a player capable of reading stdin. - yt-dlp cannot extract a video: test the exact URL and inspect yt-dlp’s output. The site may have changed, or the item may be unavailable to your account or region; consult the current yt-dlp FAQ and README.
- Playlist entries do not transition as expected: do not treat the one-video pipe example as a playlist handoff guarantee. Download entries first and queue the resulting files, or verify the behavior of your own playlist iteration method.
- FFmpeg rejects an option: check the installed version and its local documentation; the online documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe a newer release.
- Playback quality or compatibility is unsuitable: review yt-dlp’s current format selection and the output requirements. If using FFmpeg, distinguish stream copy from transcoding; conversion costs computation and may be lossy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos rather than watching a playlist on your desktop, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
