“I’ll Be There for You” made the Rembrandts famous far beyond their alternative-rock audience, but Danny Wilde said that recognition came with a cost: some longtime fans stopped taking the band seriously. The song also generated meaningful performance income, including money Wilde said helped put his children through college. That did not mean the duo owned publishing on the television version, or that the hit made them rich.
How the Rembrandts came to record the Friends theme
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Danny Wilde recalled that Friends executive producer Kevin Bright was a Rembrandts fan and asked the duo to make a sitcom theme. The band recorded a 43-second version two days later. Wilde remembered that their name was not included in the show’s first-season credits.
After the song and the sitcom caught on, the record company asked the band to return and record a full-length version. Rhino says that expanded recording went to U.S. radio on May 23, 1995, and was included as the final track on the Rembrandts’ third album, L.P. The band’s official biography describes it as a hidden bonus track and says the album was certified platinum on the song’s strength.
The expanded recording also became a major radio hit. Rhino’s 2022 account says it reached No. 17 on the U.S. Hot 100, spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Radio Airplay chart, and was No. 1 in Canada for five consecutive weeks. The band biography gives a different duration for the U.S. Radio Airplay chart: 11 weeks at No. 1. Those accounts should be kept distinct rather than combined into a single figure.

Why the hit cost the band some of its old audience
The song brought recognition, but it also changed what many people expected from the Rembrandts. Wilde told The Guardian that the band went from playing clubs to matinee shows where parents brought their children. “Once people realised it was us, it killed our cool vibe,” he said. He recalled the theme becoming an albatross around their necks, and said he and bandmate Phil Solem eventually took time apart.
In a 2004 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Wilde described the duo as having been associated with alternative radio. He said that being asked mainly about Friends felt embarrassing, that he felt they had sold out, and that they had little control over the band’s direction. In a separate 2004 interview, The Independent quoted his assessment: “I think we lost a lot of our original fans at that point, and many people stopped taking us seriously.”

That does not mean every longtime listener left, or that the effect lasted in only one direction. In a 2019 interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Solem said that some original listeners had snubbed the band because of the theme. He also described a new generation becoming receptive to the Rembrandts through the song. The members’ recollections point to a divided legacy: the theme could distance some listeners while introducing the band to others.
What the Friends theme paid—and what it did not
Wilde’s description of the song’s financial impact was neither that it paid nothing nor that the duo earned a fortune. The Los Angeles Times reported that the band received a performer’s fee when the song introduced Friends. Wilde put the return this way: “I can’t retire on it, but it’s putting my kids through college.”

Wilde also told The Independent that the duo received performance money when the show aired but did not receive publishing royalties for the television version. Rhino’s 2022 account likewise quotes him describing income from repeat showings as a benefit. In other words, the income he described came from performance-related payments; it should not be mistaken for ownership of the TV version’s publishing.
Wilde’s comments are retrospective accounts, not an audited statement of the song’s lifetime earnings. The cited reporting does not establish a total amount the duo earned, and it does not quantify how many fans they lost. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Wilde said the hit brought meaningful income, while also saying it reshaped the band’s reputation and did not make him rich enough to retire.

Why the song remained both burden and benefit
The theme’s ubiquity made it difficult for the band to separate its identity from a television hit, particularly when audiences focused on Friends rather than the Rembrandts’ wider catalog. At the same time, the song kept generating performance income and offered a route into the band’s music for listeners who might not otherwise have found it. Solem’s later account of younger listeners discovering the group through the theme captures that other side of its legacy.
For listeners interested in the longer recording rather than the short television version, the expanded track appears on L.P. as the album’s hidden final track, according to the band’s biography. Check the track listing of the particular edition, since that placement is described as a hidden bonus track.
