Melisandre is a fictional priestess and prophet, not a portrait of a known historical woman. Her closest historical context lies in medieval debates over women’s visions and religious authority; popular comparisons to Rasputin and the Greek myth of Iphigenia illuminate different aspects of her story, but do not prove she was modeled on either.
Who is Melisandre in Game of Thrones?
Melisandre serves R’hllor, the Lord of Light, and becomes an influential adviser to Stannis Baratheon. She interprets prophecy as evidence that Stannis is Azor Ahai reborn, a promised champion in the struggle against darkness. Her authority is therefore both religious and political: she claims insight into a cosmic conflict and uses that claim in the service of a ruler’s ambitions.
Her faith also has a disturbing edge. As medieval historian Marta Cobb observes in her discussion of the character, Melisandre’s promise of a savior and victory over darkness exists alongside blood sacrifice. That tension makes her more than a court mystic: the series asks viewers to consider what happens when prophecy, political power and violence reinforce one another.
What medieval women visionaries help explain about her?
Cobb, a Teaching Fellow in Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds, places Melisandre in conversation with women in later medieval Europe who claimed visions or prophetic insight. Women could not become priests, but some gained religious influence through visionary authority. The comparison concerns how such authority could be exercised and judged, not a claim that real medieval women practiced Melisandre’s magic.

Bridget of Sweden and religious influence
Bridget of Sweden campaigned for the papacy to return from Avignon to Rome. Her example shows how a woman’s religious convictions and claimed insight could reach beyond private devotion into matters of public and political consequence. It is a useful parallel to Melisandre’s access to a ruler, though Bridget’s historical religious life is not equivalent to the fictional priestess’s supernatural powers.
Joan of Arc and contested authority
Joan of Arc’s military victories helped make Charles VII’s coronation possible. Her story likewise illustrates how a woman’s religious claims could acquire political force—and become subject to scrutiny. The parallel is about the contested authority of a woman who claimed special religious insight, not a suggestion that Joan was a sorceress or a direct model for Melisandre.

Prophet or witch?
Cobb highlights the difficulty medieval Christians saw in distinguishing a divinely inspired vision from demonic deception, along with the suspicion often directed at women who claimed special communication with the divine. That history helps explain the “prophet or witch?” tension around Melisandre without reducing real women’s religious lives to a fantasy stereotype. It also cautions against treating the label “witch” as a neutral description of women who held religious influence.
Is Melisandre based on Rasputin?
A 2015 TIME feature compares Melisandre’s influence over Stannis to Grigori Rasputin’s influence over rulers. The resemblance is a popular-culture comparison: both are presented as mystics whose proximity to power shapes political decisions. The article does not establish that George R. R. Martin based Melisandre on Rasputin, so calling Rasputin “the real Red Woman” would go beyond the evidence.

Why compare the Shireen story to Iphigenia?
The same TIME article compares the story of Stannis and his daughter Shireen to the Greek myth of Agamemnon and Iphigenia. This is a mythic parallel about a parent, a sacrifice and the demands of a larger cause—not a historical account of an actual sacrifice, nor proof that the myth was a confirmed source for the plot. It is distinct from the comparisons to medieval women visionaries and to Rasputin: each draws attention to a different theme.
What does Melisandre represent in the story?
Literary critic Daniel Mendelsohn reads R’hllor and the series’ fire-and-ice religious motifs as part of the books’ metaphysical concerns, while noting that the television adaptation concentrates more strongly on Melisandre. This perspective helps explain why she functions as more than a political adviser: she is also a focus for questions about prophecy, belief, sacrifice and the struggle between opposing forces.

A University of the Free State dissertation offers another interpretive lens, analyzing the television character through motifs associated with the monstrous feminine, witch stereotypes, priestesses and pre-Christian sovereignty. That is a scholarly reading of the character, not an uncontested account of her meaning or a historical fact about the people who inspired her.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, who was the real Red Woman?
No single historical woman is established as Melisandre’s direct model. Bridget of Sweden and Joan of Arc illuminate the possibilities and risks of women’s visionary authority; Rasputin is a journalistic comparison for influence over rulers; Iphigenia supplies a mythic parallel for sacrifice. These connections help put the character in context, but none identifies a “real” Melisandre.

For a broader historical perspective on the series, Wiley’s Game of Thrones versus History: Written in Blood, edited by Brian A. Pavlac and first published on 3 March 2017, collects essays by medieval historians examining how the show and Martin’s fantasy relate to real historical figures, events, beliefs and practices. It is a general collection, not a Melisandre-specific biography.
