Spoilers for Kung Fu Panda 4: Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane are away on separate missions for most of the film. They do not join Po and Zhen’s main adventure, but they return in the mid-credits sequence to train Zhen.

Who are the Furious Five?

The Furious Five are Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane—the veteran kung-fu masters who have fought alongside Po throughout the earlier films.

In Kung Fu Panda 4, the Five remain active in the kung-fu world, but they are not part of the central journey through the Valley of Peace and Juniper City. Po explains that they are away on separate missions.

Where are the Furious Five in Kung Fu Panda 4?

The film does not show the individual missions. It gives no separate subplot for Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, or Crane, and none of them has a substantial speaking role in the main story.

  • Tigress: Still the team’s leader, but without a separate mission or main-story storyline.
  • Monkey: Away with the other masters and later present for Zhen’s training.
  • Mantis: Not involved in the central plot; he returns with the team during the credits.
  • Viper: Absent from Po and Zhen’s journey and limited to the team’s return.
  • Crane: Away on a separate mission and later included in the group training sequence.

So the Five were not cut entirely from the released film. They are mostly absent from the main feature, rather than absent from the movie altogether.

How the Furious Five return

During the mid-credits sequence, the Five return to the training hall, where Po and Zhen are practicing. They help put Zhen through exercises that echo the training Po received in the first Kung Fu Panda.

The scene functions as a passing-of-the-torch moment. Po is no longer the only new student being prepared for a major role, and the veteran Five are now helping train the next generation. There is no additional post-credits scene after the main credits.

Why were they given such a small role?

Director Mike Mitchell explained that the filmmakers wanted to expand the world and introduce new characters without overcrowding the movie. The ending was intended to give longtime fans a glimpse of what could come next, including the Furious Five’s return.

Mitchell has also said that, if he continued the series, he would want the Five “front and center.” That describes his preference for a hypothetical continuation—not confirmation that another film is in production.

What happens to Po and Zhen?

The reduced role for the Five is connected to the film’s larger transition. Po chooses Zhen as the candidate to succeed him as Dragon Warrior while he moves toward becoming the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace.

That changes the Five’s likely narrative function. Rather than serving only as Po’s fellow heroes, they are positioned as experienced mentors and protectors for Zhen. The ending suggests that they have not been retired or replaced; they have been repositioned within a new generation of the story.

Will the Furious Five be in Kung Fu Panda 5?

As of August 14, 2026, no official Kung Fu Panda 5 title, greenlight, cast announcement, or release date had been verified in the sources reviewed for this article.

Universal’s official upcoming-movies page lists an untitled DreamWorks Animation event film for September 24, 2027, but it does not identify that project as Kung Fu Panda 5. It would be inaccurate to treat the listing as confirmation of a fifth film.

A future story could logically follow Po’s move into spiritual leadership, Zhen’s training, and the Five’s return to larger team roles. That is an evidence-based possibility suggested by the ending and Mitchell’s comments, not an announced plot.

The answer in brief

Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane are away on separate missions during most of Kung Fu Panda 4. They return in the mid-credits sequence to train Zhen, becoming senior mentors for the next stage of the franchise. A larger comeback is possible, but Kung Fu Panda 5 has not been officially confirmed as of August 14, 2026.
