The JD Vance–Tim Walz vice-presidential debate took place on October 1, 2024, so it is no longer available as a live event. You can still watch the complete debate replay online through CBS News or the official CBS News YouTube video, without a traditional cable subscription.
Where to watch the full debate replay
- CBS News video archive: Open the complete CBS News debate video.
- Official CBS News YouTube feed: Watch the archived broadcast on CBS News’s official YouTube page. If the event page has changed, search YouTube for “CBS News Vance Walz debate” and choose the verified CBS News account.
- CBS News digital platforms: CBS News promoted the debate through its free streaming service, website, and app. Availability of individual app features can vary by device and region.
For this specific debate, a Paramount+ subscription, a live-TV bundle, or a cable login was not necessary to use the free CBS News digital coverage described by CBS. That does not mean every platform carrying related election coverage was free.
What happened to the live stream?
The live debate was held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. It lasted approximately 90 minutes. Because the event has ended, pages that once displayed a live player may now redirect to a replay, an article, or a different CBS News video. Use the archive links above rather than looking for a current “live” broadcast.
The debate was hosted by CBS News at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City. The participants were Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz. Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan moderated the event, which had no live audience. It was the only planned vice-presidential debate of the 2024 election.

Watching on a smart TV or streaming device
The simplest television options are usually the YouTube app or a supported CBS News app. Open the app, search for the official CBS News account or the full debate title, and confirm that the video is the complete debate rather than a short clip, commentary program, or repost.
If the video is inconvenient to find on a television, open the CBS News replay on a phone or laptop instead. Depending on the device, you may be able to cast or mirror the video to the TV. App menus and casting support vary, so do not assume that every smart-TV model offers the same CBS News features.

Was ABC News another option?
Yes, for the live event. ABC News announced broader election coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern and said its ABC News Live programming would include a simulcast of the CBS News debate. ABC listed distribution through platforms including YouTube, Roku, Amazon, Samsung TV, Disney+, and Hulu.

This was an ABC News coverage package rather than a separate ABC debate production. Availability could vary by device, location, app, and account status. If you are watching the debate now, CBS News’s dedicated full-video archive is the more direct route.

If the replay or player does not work
- Try the official CBS News YouTube video if the CBS News webpage buffers or fails to load.
- Try the CBS News app, YouTube app, or another supported device.
- Refresh the page and check that your browser or streaming app is current.
- Temporarily disable an aggressive ad blocker or privacy extension if the video player will not load.
- Check that you are using the full-video page, not a short news clip or an expired live-event page.
- If you are outside the United States, expect availability to vary because regional distribution rights may apply.
Social-media clips can help you find notable moments, but they are not a dependable substitute for the complete debate and may be edited, interrupted, or removed.
What if you wanted the conventional CBS broadcast?
The CBS broadcast network is different from CBS News’s free digital streaming coverage. A local CBS station may be available through an antenna, a cable provider, or a live-TV service, depending on your market. An antenna can be a useful long-term option, but local station coverage and reception vary by ZIP code, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed nationwide solution.

If you already subscribe to a live-TV service that carries your local CBS station, you may be able to watch the broadcast there. Buying a paid television package solely to view this debate is unnecessary when the official CBS News replay is available online.
