Natural burial, alkaline hydrolysis and human composting have different material, energy, land, water, emissions and remains-handling profiles. The honest way to compare them is to examine the whole service, the facility and cemetery conditions, the legal disposal route, and what ultimately happens to the remains.
“Green funeral” is a description, not a certification
Funeral providers use green, eco and natural for services that may reduce some conventional inputs. Those words do not identify a regulated score or a common technical standard. A claim can refer to a biodegradable shroud, a cemetery managed for habitat, a water-based disposition process, or an entire service package. The components may have very different environmental consequences.
The National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (NCCEH) review of alternative disposition services says the proposed benefits and hazards must be considered together: its evidence review found few studies that measured the size of claimed benefits and no comparative studies of human composting. That makes a universal “greenest funeral” ranking unjustified.
Define what is being compared
A useful comparison includes the activities before, during and after disposition, not just the chamber or grave. The Health Council of the Netherlands identifies life-cycle categories that can change the result:

- Land occupied, altered or managed for the grave, facility and memorial landscape
- Raw materials such as coffins, shrouds, vessels, markers and landscaping products
- Electricity, fuel and heat used by equipment and buildings
- Water consumption and the treatment or discharge of wastewater
- Climate emissions, air pollutants, ozone effects and nutrient pollution
- Groundwater, soil and habitat effects at the site
- Safety, worker exposure and the route taken by bones, ashes, liquid or composted material
- Transport, ceremony and any temporary storage included in the service
A method can have a lower impact on one category while creating a greater burden on another. For example, avoiding a fuel-fired process does not answer how much water is used or where the resulting liquid goes. A cemetery that protects habitat may still require a site assessment to prevent groundwater contamination.
Natural or green burial: fewer conventional inputs, continuing land responsibility
Natural burial usually places an unembalmed body in a biodegradable shroud or coffin in a cemetery or conservation-style burial ground. The stated aim is to avoid or reduce embalming chemicals, energy-intensive cemetery landscaping, impermeable surfaces and resource-heavy coffins or monuments. The NCCEH review describes possible benefits including less machinery and chemical use, fewer embalming-related chemical leachates, and conservation or public-green-space functions.
What determines whether a site is environmentally sound
Those benefits are proposals, not guarantees. Burial still occupies land, and the suitability of that land depends on geology, hydrology, soil and management. The UK Environment Agency’s cemeteries and burials groundwater guidance explains that risk depends on a source, a pathway and a receptor. A grave may require detailed groundwater assessment or a permit when contaminants could reach groundwater or surface water.
The same guidance recommends considering locally or sustainably sourced, readily degradable shrouds and coffins, ecologically responsible burial-ground design, and avoiding preservatives in embalming or coffin construction. A biodegradable product therefore helps only when the cemetery accepts it and the site’s soil and water conditions can safely accommodate it.

Questions to ask a natural-burial operator
- What regulator approved the burial ground, and was a groundwater or soil assessment required?
- Are embalming, metal fittings, treated timber, plastic liners, vaults or concrete memorials prohibited?
- Which shrouds and coffins are accepted, and must materials be locally sourced or certified?
- How are mowing, irrigation, pesticides, paths and memorials managed over time?
- How is land protected if the site later changes ownership or management?
A natural-fibre shroud can be an appropriate optional choice, but acceptance is controlled by the cemetery. Confirm its dimensions, fastening materials and documentation before purchase; “natural fibre” alone does not establish that a particular site will accept it.
Alkaline hydrolysis: a controlled vessel followed by a wastewater decision
In alkaline hydrolysis, the body is placed in a stainless-steel vessel with water and a strong alkali, usually potassium hydroxide. Heat and pressure accelerate breakdown of soft tissue. Bone fragments remain, are recovered and crushed, and are returned to the family in a form handled similarly to cremated remains. The NCCEH describes this process and notes that the liquid product is commonly called hydrolysate or effluent.
The liquid output is part of the environmental profile
Hydrolysate is not an impact-free by-product. Providers may neutralize or dilute it before discharge to a sanitary sewer, but the permitted route and treatment requirements depend on local health and environmental law. Ask for the facility’s written discharge authorization, treatment steps, monitoring requirements and contingency plan rather than assuming that a sewer connection is automatically allowed.
Water, alkali, electricity, vessel manufacture and transport also belong in a whole-service assessment. The Health Council of the Netherlands’ October 2025 update discusses effluent volumes, treatment routes and differing life-cycle assessments; it did not turn alkaline hydrolysis into a universal environmental guarantee. The council found no reason to revise its 2020 conclusion that the method met its assessment conditions in the Dutch context, but that conclusion does not override another jurisdiction’s discharge rules.

Legality is local
The NCCEH review, published in 2023, found that legal permission and provider availability for alkaline hydrolysis were limited to particular Canadian jurisdictions at that time. North Carolina illustrates how oversight can be structured: its statute requires a hydrolysis license and makes liquid-waste disposal subject to applicable health and environmental laws (North Carolina General Statutes §90-210.136).
That example is not a global rule. Before arranging the service, confirm that the disposition is legal where the death occurred, where the body will be processed and where the liquid will be discharged. Ask who inspects the vessel, who handles the bones and what happens if a permit or sewer connection is unavailable.
Human composting: an emerging process with an immature evidence base
Human composting, also called natural organic reduction, places a body in an above-ground container with plant-based materials and manages aerobic decomposition. After a processing period, the resulting material is screened and handled according to local rules and the provider’s protocol. Unlike a grave, the process is contained above ground; unlike alkaline hydrolysis, it does not use a heated alkaline solution.
What is still uncertain
The NCCEH review identified unanswered questions about pathogen control, worker exposure, nuisance odors, pollutants and the appropriate handling of the resulting material. It found no studies comparing human composting with conventional burial or cremation. Processes were not standardized, and providers could use different materials, temperatures, monitoring and end uses.

The Health Council of the Netherlands’ 2025 advice reached a specific, time-bound conclusion: information on safety and sustainability was insufficient to admit human composting in the Netherlands at that time. The council described the process as still under development and said the available scientific literature was too limited for a reliable environmental-impact calculation. This is a Dutch assessment dated October 2025, not a worldwide legal ruling.
The council’s report records provider estimates of 100 to 500 kilograms of human remains produced during composting. That is a reported range for the resulting material, not an emissions figure, a performance score or evidence that one provider’s process is better than another’s.
What a provider should be able to document
- Container design, airflow, temperature, moisture and monitoring records
- How pathogens, medicines, implants and other contaminants are managed
- Worker-protection procedures and controls for odors or pests
- Testing and legal destination of the finished material
- What families receive, what cannot be returned, and which memorial uses are allowed
- The regulator, license category and inspection schedule covering the facility
A practical comparison framework
Instead of assigning a single green score, use the following questions for every option. The answers should describe the actual facility and cemetery, not a generic description of the method.
| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Land and habitat | Area required, groundwater separation, habitat management, memorial landscaping and long-term stewardship | Land can provide conservation benefits but can also create soil or water risks and ongoing maintenance burdens |
| Energy and emissions | Electricity or fuel source, heating requirements, building energy and transport included in the claim | A process with low direct emissions may still use energy elsewhere in the service |
| Materials and chemicals | Coffin or shroud composition, embalming, alkali, plastics, metals and concrete | Substitution only helps if the material is accepted, responsibly sourced and managed after use |
| Water and effluent | Water volume, sewer or treatment route, permits, testing and emergency arrangements | Liquid handling can shift environmental risk outside the processing room |
| Final remains | Bone fragments, ashes, hydrolysate or composted material; return, burial and storage options | The disposition route is part of the life cycle, not an afterthought |
| Safety and oversight | Licenses, inspections, worker controls, pathogen procedures and complaint process | Regulatory coverage differs by method and jurisdiction |
| Availability and price | Current local legality, provider capacity, transport distance and itemized fee | Access and costs change by location; broad internet claims may be outdated |
| Family priorities | Viewing, ceremony, timing, memorial location and what relatives can keep | An option is not suitable if it conflicts with legally permitted or personally important rituals |
How regulation differs by method
Oversight is not interchangeable. UK crematoria guidance addresses regulated air emissions and materials used in cremation, but explicitly excludes alkaline hydrolysis and burial from its scope (UK crematoria technical guidance). Burial proposals may instead require groundwater and land-use review. Hydrolysis may require a specific vessel license plus wastewater approval. Human composting can fall under newer or less settled rules.

For that reason, a provider’s environmental certification must be read carefully. Ask whether it covers the facility, a product such as a shroud, the cemetery, or an entire life-cycle claim. A logo or “eco” label is not a substitute for the underlying permit and process description.
A buyer’s checklist before signing a funeral contract
- Name the exact disposition. Replace “green funeral” with natural burial, alkaline hydrolysis or human composting and identify every included service.
- Request the process sheet. It should state materials, chemicals, water, energy, processing time, transport and the handling of remains.
- Verify the regulator. Obtain license numbers, inspection authority and the rules governing the cemetery, vessel or composting facility.
- Trace every output. Ask where bones, ashes, liquid or finished material go, who receives them and what happens if the planned route is unavailable.
- Check site constraints. For burial, ask about groundwater, soil, drainage, habitat management and long-term land stewardship.
- Separate evidence from marketing. Request the boundary, date, geography and measurement behind any claim of lower emissions or sustainability.
- Confirm family arrangements. Establish whether viewing is possible, how quickly the process occurs, what can be returned and where memorials are permitted.
- Get an itemized, current quote. Include transport, permits, cemetery rights, containers, certificates and any later placement or scattering fees.
Which option fits which priority?
If habitat and a local memorial landscape matter most
Investigate a natural-burial ground whose ecological management and groundwater controls are documented. The environmental value depends on the actual site, not merely on a biodegradable coffin.
If you want a contained process with bone fragments returned
Ask an alkaline-hydrolysis provider to document energy use, alkali handling, effluent treatment and all applicable permits. Compare the complete service rather than assuming that water-based means low impact.
If you are considering human composting because of the materials-reuse idea
Focus first on legal admissibility, pathogen controls, monitoring and the destination of the finished material. The Netherlands’ 2025 finding shows why claims should be treated cautiously while standards and evidence develop.

Bottom line
New eco-funeral methods are not automatically a false promise, but “green” can promise more than the evidence supports. Natural burial can reduce some materials and landscaping impacts while demanding careful land and groundwater management. Alkaline hydrolysis shifts attention to energy, alkali and wastewater treatment. Human composting remains less standardized, with significant safety and sustainability questions and no robust comparative environmental score. The defensible choice is the method whose full process, permits, site conditions and final-remains route you can verify locally.
