The Sopranos is the greatest TV show of all time—the most convincing combination of psychological depth, formal ambition, cultural influence, performances, consistency, and lasting critical recognition.

That verdict is not a scientific measurement. “Best” changes depending on whether you value historical influence, social breadth, laugh-out-loud entertainment, experimentation, or the pleasure of watching an entire series today. This ranking uses all six: artistic achievement, influence, cultural impact, consistency, originality, and present-day accessibility.

How this all-time TV ranking works

No single canon settles the question of the best TV shows ever made. Rolling Stone’s 2022 project is an updated all-time ranking; Variety’s 2023 list weighs quality and cultural impact but focuses on English-language series aired or streamed in the United States; and The Guardian’s list covers the 21st century rather than television history as a whole.

This list therefore has a clear but limited scope: it is an English-language canon with a strong American and British emphasis. It is not a complete ranking of global television. Shows were judged across six questions:

  1. Artistic achievement: How well do the writing, directing, acting, editing, imagery, sound, and structure work together?
  2. Influence: Did later television borrow from, extend, or react against the show?
  3. Cultural impact: Did it change public language, representation, or the perceived possibilities of television?
  4. Consistency: How much of the complete run remains excellent, rather than merely one exceptional season?
  5. Originality: Did it create or transform a genre, format, tone, or production model?
  6. Accessibility now: Can a new viewer still understand and value it without treating it only as historical evidence?

The 25 best TV shows of all time, ranked

1. The Sopranos (1999–2007)

The Sopranos is the strongest overall answer to “What is the greatest TV show ever made?” It turns a familiar crime premise into a psychologically intricate family drama, a dark comedy, a study of American identity, and a formally adventurous work of television.

Tony Soprano’s criminal life is only part of the subject. The series is equally interested in therapy, marriage, parenting, consumerism, loyalty, depression, inherited behavior, and the moral evasions people use to live with themselves. Its visual experiments and tonal shifts never feel like decoration; they expand the viewer’s access to Tony’s unstable inner life.

The Peabody Awards’ official 1999 citation praised the series as a work that “reflects the best and worst in all of us” and represents “television drama deserving of recognition with the Peabody Award.” The Television Academy records six seasons, 86 episodes, 21 Emmy wins, and cable television’s first Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The show’s combination of critical durability, institutional recognition, performance, influence, and character depth makes it the most defensible number one.

Best for: viewers who want the richest character study and the clearest bridge between classic television and the modern prestige era.

2. The Wire (2002–2008)

If The Sopranos is television’s supreme psychological portrait, The Wire is its great institutional novel. Across policing, politics, schools, journalism, labor, and urban governance, it shows how people are shaped—and often trapped—by systems larger than themselves.

Its social breadth is extraordinary. The series does not treat institutions as background machinery; it makes their incentives, language, failures, and compromises part of the drama. That ambition also explains its main barrier: The Wire demands patience, especially when it shifts focus away from familiar characters and conventional plot momentum.

It is the strongest alternative to The Sopranos if you value structural analysis and social scope over intimate psychological immersion.

3. I Love Lucy (1951–1957)

I Love Lucy is the highest-ranked classic sitcom because its historical influence is inseparable from its comic precision. Lucille Ball’s physical performance, the show’s carefully engineered situations, and its filmed production model helped establish the visual and structural language of the American sitcom.

Its broad comedy can feel different from modern prestige drama, but that is precisely why it matters. Few later sitcoms would exist in their familiar form without its timing, escalation, domestic setting, and repeatable character engine. Variety placed it at the top of its own all-time television canon.

4. Mad Men (2007–2015)

Mad Men is a meticulously constructed drama about identity, advertising, gender, class, ambition, memory, and American change. Its visual design is as controlled as its writing, with period detail used not as decoration but as a way to show the distance between what characters believe about themselves and what their world reveals.

Don Draper’s personal mystery anchors the series, but its achievement is the ensemble: Peggy Olson, Joan Holloway, Roger Sterling, Pete Campbell, and many others receive arcs that gradually complicate the show’s ideas about progress. Its quiet pace and indirect storytelling are demanding, yet the patience is rewarded by one of television’s richest portraits of social transformation.

5. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

Breaking Bad is the modern canon’s most controlled transformation narrative. Walter White’s movement from frustrated teacher to powerful criminal is plotted with unusual escalation, visual storytelling, and payoff.

The show is more conventionally driven than The Sopranos or The Wire, but that is part of its broad appeal. Its cause-and-effect structure, escalating danger, carefully planted details, and exceptional performances make it one of the safest recommendations for someone asking which great series to watch next.

6. The Simpsons (1989–present)

At its best, The Simpsons is one of television’s most efficient engines of satire. It influenced animation, sitcom writing, catchphrases, visual shorthand, and the way popular culture could be examined through a family comedy.

The ranking recognizes the extraordinary early and middle periods while acknowledging the unevenness that comes with such a long run. Its total cultural footprint remains enormous: few shows have supplied so many generations with a shared comic vocabulary.

7. The Twilight Zone (1959–1964)

The Twilight Zone remains the gold standard of anthology television. Its short stories use science fiction, fantasy, suspense, and the macabre to examine fear, prejudice, conformity, technology, vanity, and moral choice.

The format gives the series unusual durability. New viewers do not need to follow a long continuity, and its conceptual reversals remain easy to adapt to changing anxieties. Its compact storytelling and bold premises still make it one of the most accessible classic shows.

8. Seinfeld (1989–1998)

Seinfeld transformed the sitcom by making social friction, petty grievance, and conversational observation sufficient dramatic engines. Its tightly interlocking plots turn small misunderstandings into elaborate comic mechanisms, while its anti-sentimental protagonists rejected the expectation that sitcom characters must learn a wholesome lesson.

Its influence is visible in the normalization of uncomfortable behavior, observational comedy, and stories about ordinary annoyances treated with extraordinary seriousness. It remains one of the essential answers to “What are the best sitcoms of all time?”

9. M*A*S*H (1972–1983)

M*A*S*H combined workplace comedy, antiwar drama, medical storytelling, and ensemble character development. Although set during the Korean War, it used that setting to address the anxieties and political tensions of the Vietnam era.

Its achievement lies in the balance: jokes do not cancel the human cost of war, and tragedy does not eliminate the need for comedy. The series proved that a popular network show could carry serious contemporary meaning through a historical setting.

10. Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

Better Call Saul is a rare prequel that becomes an independent artistic achievement. It begins with the recognizable outline of Saul Goodman but builds a slower, more visually exact, and more morally ambiguous story about Jimmy McGill, Kim Wexler, compromise, professional identity, and the desire to be seen as good.

Its patient character construction and composed imagery reward close attention. Compared with Breaking Bad, it is less immediately explosive, but its control and emotional accumulation are extraordinary.

11. Twin Peaks (1990–1991; 2017)

Twin Peaks radically expanded what American television could look and sound like. It collides soap opera, mystery, horror, surrealism, and auteur cinema, creating a world where melodrama and nightmare occupy the same frame.

Its influence is larger than its conventional plot mechanics. The series made tonal instability, dream logic, deliberate strangeness, and visually ambitious authorship central possibilities for television. Its 2017 return deepened rather than simplified that legacy.

12. Fleabag (2016–2019)

Fleabag is a nearly perfect short-form tragicomedy. Its direct address, compressed structure, tonal control, and emotional reversals create an unusually concentrated achievement across only two seasons.

The show uses comedy as both defense mechanism and confession. Its protagonist’s relationship with the audience gradually changes from conspiratorial performance to exposure, giving the series a formal idea that is also an emotional one. It achieves in 12 episodes what many longer shows do not achieve in several seasons.

13. Succession (2018–2023)

Succession turns wealth, inheritance, media power, and emotional dependency into comic tragedy. Its subject is familiar—an immensely rich family fighting over control—but the precision of its dialogue and the quality of its ensemble make every negotiation feel both absurd and consequential.

Its strongest achievement is not novelty of premise. It is the way the series makes power visible in speech, posture, silence, gifts, insults, and the desperate need for parental approval.

14. Cheers (1982–1993)

Cheers is one of television’s great ensemble sitcoms. Its bar setting provides a stable communal space where relationships can develop over 11 seasons and 275 episodes without exhausting the basic premise.

The show’s strength is the durability of its interactions. Routine conversation becomes structurally rich because the audience understands the histories, rivalries, romances, and loyalties beneath every exchange. Its long run also helped launch and sustain several major television careers.

15. The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977)

The Mary Tyler Moore Show changed expectations for the sitcom by centering a professional woman whose life was not defined solely by marriage or domesticity. Its workplace ensemble allowed the series to combine warmth, social observation, romantic uncertainty, and career ambition.

It belongs in an all-time ranking because television history is not only a story of modern prestige dramas. The show’s influence on workplace comedy, ensemble structure, and the representation of women in professional life remains foundational.

16. Atlanta (2016–2022)

Atlanta moves between comedy, social realism, surrealism, music-world drama, and anthology-like experimentation. Its episodes do not always follow the same rules, and that unevenness is part of the risk it takes.

The series is united by a distinctive perspective on race, class, ambition, fame, and the absurdity of contemporary life. Its originality and representation make it one of the defining shows of the 21st century.

17. The Office (U.S., 2005–2013)

The American Office became a comfort-viewing phenomenon by combining mockumentary observation, workplace intimacy, cringe comedy, and a broad ensemble. Its cultural afterlife and accessibility are major strengths: it remains an unusually easy recommendation for viewers seeking a familiar show to binge.

The full run is uneven, and the first season is closely tied to the British original. Even so, the series created a rare sense of generational community around an ordinary workplace and helped make mockumentary style mainstream.

18. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses monsters as metaphors for adolescence, identity, sexuality, grief, responsibility, and power. Its genre premise allowed it to dramatize emotional problems literally without reducing them to simple lessons.

The show’s influence on genre television and the archetype of the action-oriented heroine is substantial. It evolved from a cult favorite into a classic because its supernatural machinery consistently served coming-of-age storytelling.

19. Deadwood (2004–2006)

Deadwood is a compressed western about community formation, capitalism, violence, and political order. Its language is unusually distinctive, its performances are commanding, and its historical imagination makes the creation of a town feel like a struggle over power and legitimacy.

The short run and unfinished feeling keep it outside the top tier, but its dialogue, atmosphere, and moral complexity make it indispensable for anyone building a serious TV canon.

20. The West Wing (1999–2006)

The West Wing is a highly articulate, idealized political drama whose rapid dialogue and civic optimism became its signature. It should be valued as a crafted fantasy of public service rather than mistaken for a realistic account of how government operates.

Its Capraesque belief in argument, competence, and institutional possibility gave it a distinctive cultural place. The show’s appeal lies in the pleasure of hearing political ideals expressed with confidence and speed.

21. Fawlty Towers (1975–1979)

Fawlty Towers is a compact British sitcom with extraordinary comic construction, physical escalation, and performance control. Its brief run is an advantage: there is very little filler and a remarkably high proportion of canonical episodes.

A Guardian report on a BFI poll identified it as the greatest television program in that British historical survey. Its tightly engineered chaos makes it a strong choice for viewers who want the best classic TV shows without committing to a long series.

22. The Leftovers (2014–2017)

The Leftovers is an emotionally demanding drama about grief, faith, uncertainty, and the limits of explanation. It refuses to treat every mystery as a puzzle that must be solved, instead asking how people construct meaning when certainty is unavailable.

Its audience is smaller than that of many entries here, but its ambition and willingness to leave questions unresolved make it one of the most critically valued modern series.

23. Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Game of Thrones changed the scale of mainstream television. Its fantasy production, serialized plotting, global attention, and willingness to depict spectacular events helped redefine what audiences expected a television series to show.

The final season creates a genuine consistency penalty, but the achievement of the peak years is too large to ignore. It was the biggest television show of the 2010s for many viewers and demonstrated that fantasy could become the center of mass popular culture.

24. Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024)

Curb Your Enthusiasm extends the possibilities of semi-improvised television comedy. Its engine is social rule-breaking: an abrasive protagonist violates an expectation, creates a misunderstanding, and watches the situation escalate through an intricate chain of discomfort.

The series’ influence lies in making awkwardness itself a durable comic form. It is not conventionally warm, but its commitment to social absurdity is remarkably consistent.

25. Sesame Street (1969–present)

Sesame Street proves that an all-time television ranking cannot be limited to adult scripted drama. It combines academic and moral lessons with memorable characters, music, humor, and an ideal of communal care.

Its achievement is both educational and formal: it made learning part of the grammar of popular television without treating children as passive viewers. Any serious history of the medium must place children’s programming at the center rather than treating it as a side category.

How the closest contenders compare

The Sopranos vs. The Wire

Choose The Sopranos for psychological intimacy, family conflict, moral ambiguity, and formal experimentation. Choose The Wire for social breadth, institutional analysis, and a wider view of how cities function. Neither is simply “better”; they answer different definitions of greatness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Breaking Bad vs. Better Call Saul

Breaking Bad is the more immediate, tightly escalating thriller. Better Call Saul is slower and more contemplative, with greater emphasis on visual composition, professional identity, and the gradual moral collapse of relationships.

Peak quality vs. complete-run consistency

A show can have a higher peak but a weaker whole. Game of Thrones is the clearest example: its best years changed television, but its final season lowers the complete-series score. Shorter shows such as Fleabag and Fawlty Towers benefit from having little filler, while long-running shows such as The Simpsons and Curb Your Enthusiasm must be judged against their uneven stretches.

Historical influence vs. present-day accessibility

I Love Lucy and The Twilight Zone may be more historically important than some newer favorites, but their pacing and performance styles can feel less immediate to contemporary viewers. That does not diminish their place; it explains why “greatest” and “easiest to binge” are different questions.

Formal innovation vs. conventional satisfaction

Twin Peaks, Atlanta, and The Leftovers take greater formal risks than Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. The experimental shows may be more influential artistically, while the more conventionally plotted series often provide clearer momentum and payoff.

  • For formal experimentation: Twin Peaks or Atlanta
  • For a comfort watch: The Office

  • For a demanding meditation on grief and faith: The Leftovers
  • For children’s television with historic importance: Sesame Street

What is the number-one TV show?

The number-one show on this ranking is The Sopranos. It does not win because it has the largest audience, the most episodes, or the most universally accessible premise. It wins because its strengths converge: writing, acting, visual invention, psychological complexity, dark humor, cultural influence, institutional recognition, and a complete run that remains rewarding to revisit.

That conclusion should remain open to argument. If your priority is institutional analysis, The Wire is the strongest alternative. If you value foundational influence, I Love Lucy has an exceptional claim. If you want the most precise transformation thriller, choose Breaking Bad. The best ranking is ultimately a map of competing ideas about what television can do.
