Star Trek: Scouts premiered on September 8, 2025, with two free short episodes on YouTube. Aimed at preschool viewers, the animated series follows three eight-year-old friends training to become future Starfleet explorers.
What is Star Trek: Scouts?
Star Trek: Scouts is a short-form computer-animated series developed and produced by Nickelodeon Digital Studio in association with CBS Studios. It launched on Star Trek Day, September 8, 2025, with an announced order of 20 episodes.
The initial release consisted of two episodes, each running approximately three to four minutes. The stories focus on simple missions involving exploration, rescue, problem-solving and teamwork—an approach designed for preschool audiences rather than for the continuity-heavy storytelling of many adult-oriented Star Trek productions.
Who are the characters?
The series follows three eight-year-old friends:

- Roo
They are training to become future Starfleet Explorers. The official trailer also identifies their animal companions as Zips, Bubbles and Star. Its setup features the young Scouts taking on adventures such as blasting asteroids and rescuing creatures.

The official announcement describes the show as a preschool extension of the franchise centered on discovery, growth, friendship and boldly going.
Where can you watch it?
At launch, Star Trek: Scouts was released free on the verified Blaze and the Monster Machines YouTube channel, rather than as a Paramount+ exclusive. Parents can search YouTube for the verified channel and the exact title Star Trek: Scouts.
That means viewers did not need a Paramount+ subscription to access the announced launch episodes. However, “free” means free to watch on YouTube; it does not necessarily mean ad-free, account-free or permanently available in every country. Channel organization, regional access and episode availability can change. Parents may also wish to use YouTube Kids or local parental-control settings where those options are available.

Why the YouTube release matters
The series gives Star Trek a substantially lower barrier to entry than a subscription-streaming program. Preschool viewers can encounter the franchise through a platform already used for children’s programming, while the three-to-four-minute format suits short viewing sessions and repeat plays.
The Nickelodeon connection is also significant. This is not simply a new show uploaded to the main Star Trek channel: Nickelodeon Digital Studio is the production partner, and the initial YouTube home is a children’s entertainment channel associated with Blaze and the Monster Machines.
That makes Scouts both a children’s series and a new access point to the larger Star Trek brand. The strategic implication is clear, even though the announcement does not spell out a broader corporate strategy: the franchise can reach families who may not subscribe to a paid streaming service or know the older television series.

What does “first ever” mean?
The official announcement calls Scouts a “brand-new, original animated YouTube-first series.” That wording should not be read as meaning that it is the first Star Trek video ever published on YouTube.
The franchise has previously released online material, including promotional videos, fan-oriented content and the five Very Short Treks animated shorts released in 2023. It also has a long history of official animation and unofficial fan productions.
The more precise distinction is that Scouts is presented as Star Trek’s first formal, original, preschool-focused series commissioned for a YouTube-first release. It is not the first Star Trek animation, the first Star Trek short or the first Star Trek-related video to appear online.

The available official announcement does not specify whether the series is part of Star Trek continuity. Paramount and Star Trek present it as a preschool extension of the franchise, but they have not established its canonical status in the announcement.

The bottom line
Star Trek: Scouts is notable less for expanding the franchise’s established timeline than for changing how young audiences can enter it: through free, ultra-short animated episodes on YouTube. The “first ever” claim needs narrowing, but the series is genuinely distinctive as an official, preschool-focused, YouTube-first Star Trek production.
