In the Grey is Guy Ritchie’s 2026 action thriller starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González. The film opened in U.S. theaters on May 15, 2026, with Black Bear Pictures handling the domestic theatrical release. Its public official trailer arrived in March 2026—not at CinemaCon, where Lionsgate showed an earlier, exhibitor-only footage presentation in April 2024.
What is In the Grey about?
Written and directed by Guy Ritchie, In the Grey follows a covert team of elite operatives tasked with recovering a billion-dollar fortune stolen by a ruthless despot. What begins as a high-value heist develops into a larger conflict built around strategy, deception and survival.
The film is an original screenplay rather than an adaptation. Henry Cavill plays Sid, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bronco, and Eiza González plays Sophia. Carlos Bardem appears as Manny Salazar. The cast also includes Kristofer Hivju, Emmet J. Scanlan, Jason Wong, Michael Vu, Fisher Stevens and Rosamund Pike. The full cast and official synopsis are listed on the film’s official website.

The trailer presents In the Grey as a globe-spanning covert-operations thriller, combining the central fortune-recovery mission with gunfights, pursuit sequences and the uneasy relationships within the team. Its short runtime—approximately 97 minutes—suggests a compact action film rather than an extended espionage epic.
What happened at CinemaCon?
The CinemaCon connection is real, but the wording “trailer revealed at CinemaCon” is not precise. Lionsgate unveiled the title In the Grey and showed footage during its 2024 CinemaCon presentation. The footage was reportedly shown to exhibitors rather than released publicly as an online trailer.

Contemporary attendee and trade-report descriptions mentioned Gyllenhaal and González staking out a café while Cavill communicated with them from a vehicle, followed by a shootout. Other reported glimpses included tropical settings, car chases, speedboat action and Rosamund Pike’s character. Those details come from accounts of the private presentation, not from an officially published CinemaCon video. Discussing Film’s report and British GQ’s coverage both treated the material as an exclusive first look.

At that point, Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González were attached, while the title and plot were being kept secret. TheWrap reported the original announcement.
Release date and distributors
In the Grey opened in the United States on May 15, 2026. Black Bear Pictures handled the domestic theatrical release. The distribution plan changed during the film’s development. Lionsgate initially scheduled the movie for January 17, 2025, then removed it from its calendar in November 2024. Black Bear subsequently took over the U.S. theatrical release. An earlier Black Bear announcement listed April 10, 2026, but that date was replaced by the May 15 release. ComingSoon documented the changes.

The BBFC classified the United Kingdom home-entertainment version at approximately 96 minutes and 37 seconds, citing strong language, injury detail and violence. The U.S. rating and running time are listed by The Numbers; the U.K. classification is available from the BBFC.
Box-office update
The Numbers reports a U.S. opening weekend of $2,926,879 from 2,018 theaters and a reported domestic total of $5,723,890. International figures displayed by the source are incomplete, so the domestic total should not be presented as the film’s worldwide gross.
Why the title matters
The official title is In the Grey, not The Grey. That distinction is especially important because The Grey is also the title of the 2011 survival thriller starring Liam Neeson. Ritchie’s film is a separate, original action movie centered on a covert fortune-recovery operation.
