Before Harrison Ford became Han Solo, the role was pursued by several notable actors, including Kurt Russell, Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Perry King, Burt Reynolds, and Sylvester Stallone. Their connections to the part were not identical: some formally auditioned, Pacino said he was offered the role, and others later described turning it down. Harrison Ford’s own path was unusually indirect—he began as a reader for other actors before George Lucas recognized that he was right for Han.

The actors with the strongest documented connection to Han Solo

Early Star Wars casting was not a simple finalist competition. George Lucas was testing different actors in combinations, considering their chemistry, and still refining what Han Solo should be. That is why “almost played Han Solo” can describe an audition, an alleged offer, or a later recollection of declining the part.

Kurt Russell

Kurt Russell has one of the clearest documented links to the role. In early 1976, he auditioned for both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Lucas had not decided which role, if any, Russell would receive.

Russell ultimately accepted a part in the television western The Quest, taking himself out of consideration. He has specifically rejected the simplified claim that he merely “turned down” Star Wars. His surviving audition footage shows him reading material associated with the casting process. Russell explained the circumstances in an ABC News interview, and the audition footage is available to watch.

Christopher Walken

Christopher Walken was part of the early Han Solo casting group. A casting summary based on The Making of Star Wars identifies Walken, Al Pacino, and Perry King among the actors tested for Han, with actors read in different combinations to evaluate chemistry.

Walken has also discussed auditioning for the role. He was therefore more than a name on a speculative fan list: he was involved in the documented early casting process. The casting summary is available here, and Walken’s account of the audition can be viewed here.

Al Pacino

Al Pacino said he was offered Han Solo after the success of The Godfather. He declined because he did not understand the script. Pacino’s version of events is well documented in interviews, while independent casting documentation also places him among the actors considered for Han.

The available public evidence does not establish whether “offered” meant a formal Lucasfilm offer in the strict contractual sense or an advanced casting invitation. The most accurate wording is that Pacino said he was offered the role, and that he declined it. Pacino discussed the decision with Vanity Fair.

Perry King

Perry King auditioned for Han Solo and was included among the actors identified in the early casting sessions. His later connection to the character became especially notable: King voiced Han in the radio adaptations of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

That later work does not mean King was the runner-up for the film role, but it does confirm that he was a serious early candidate and eventually became one of the performers to officially portray Han in another medium. The early casting documentation is summarized here, while King’s connection to the role is discussed in this interview report.

Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds later said that he declined Han Solo. He explained that he did not want to play that kind of part at the time and subsequently acknowledged that he regretted the decision.

This account comes from Reynolds’s later recollections rather than publicly available production paperwork. It is consequently best presented as Reynolds’s own account, not as a fully documented studio casting record. ABC News reported his recollections in connection with his memoir and interviews.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone said he auditioned for Han Solo but did not get very far. His description was characteristically self-deprecating: he and Lucas apparently recognized quickly that Stallone was not right for the part.

Stallone’s story confirms an audition, but not that he reached a final round or was close to being cast. His account of the audition was reported by ComicBook.com.

How Harrison Ford got the role

Ford was not initially part of Lucas’s preferred pool of unknown actors. He had already worked with Lucas on American Graffiti and, during the casting period, was working as a carpenter.

Casting consultant Fred Roos asked Ford to read lines opposite actors auditioning for the principal roles. Those readings changed Lucas’s view of him. Ford’s timing, presence, and chemistry with the other performers led to his being cast as Han Solo.

The distinction matters: Ford did not begin as a conventional Han Solo audition candidate. He was initially a reader and scene partner for other actors, and the role emerged from those line readings. D23 describes Ford’s unusual route into the casting, while ABC News reported on his early Star Wars career.

Robert Englund was not a formal Han Solo auditioner

Robert Englund is frequently included in lists of actors who auditioned for Han Solo, but that description is too strong. Englund later clarified that he did not read from the script or perform a formal audition.

According to Englund, Lucasfilm photographed him, took a Polaroid, and spoke with him for roughly five minutes. He presumed the meeting concerned Han Solo because of what he later heard about the casting search, but he did not know that with certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accurate description is that Englund had a brief casting meeting and may have been photographed for consideration—not that he completed a Han Solo audition. His genuine Star Wars connection was helping encourage his friend and roommate Mark Hamill to pursue the Luke Skywalker opportunity. A report on Englund’s account explains the distinction, as does this correction of the commonly repeated story.

Famous names that should be treated cautiously

Many online lists add actors such as Nick Nolte, James Caan, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, John Travolta, Richard Dreyfuss, Glynn Turman, and Tom Selleck.

Some of these performers may have been contacted, discussed, or considered informally. However, the publicly available evidence does not establish the same level of involvement documented for Russell, Walken, Pacino, King, Reynolds, or Stallone. They should be described as reported candidates, not as actors who definitely auditioned or received formal offers.

The frequently repeated list appears to rely heavily on secondary summaries and fan-reference compilations rather than a complete, publicly released Lucasfilm casting record. The broad list can be seen in Han Solo reference material, but individual claims require more caution than many headlines suggest.

The specific case of Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck is often said to have turned down Han Solo. The principal source for that claim is Robert Englund, who said he later heard that “Tom Selleck or somebody like Tom Selleck” had turned down the part. Englund was uncertain about the details, and there is no confirmation from Selleck or Lucasfilm in the supplied evidence.

Tom Selleck should therefore not be presented as a confirmed actor who rejected Han Solo. At most, he belongs in the category of reported candidates.

What “almost played Han Solo” really means

Category Actors What the evidence supports
Formal audition or documented casting-session involvement Kurt Russell, Christopher Walken, Perry King, Sylvester Stallone They participated in auditions or early casting sessions, although that does not make them finalists.
Role offered according to the actor Al Pacino Pacino said he was offered the part and declined it; the precise formal status of the offer is unclear.
Later recollection of declining the role Burt Reynolds Reynolds said he declined Han and later regretted the decision.
Brief meeting, not a formal audition Robert Englund He was photographed and interviewed briefly but did not read from the script.
Repeated but insufficiently documented names Nick Nolte, James Caan, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, John Travolta, Richard Dreyfuss, Glynn Turman, Tom Selleck They should be labeled reported candidates rather than confirmed auditioners or offer recipients.

The strongest answer to the title is therefore not that every famous actor on internet lists was a near-finalist. The documented process involved many auditions, changing ideas about the character, chemistry tests, and different degrees of interest. Russell, Walken, Pacino, King, Reynolds, and Stallone all have credible documented connections—but Harrison Ford’s casting grew out of an unexpected opportunity while he was reading for others.
