Apple debuted ¡Suerte! on July 12, 2024, presenting the short film as a production shot entirely on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Directed by filmmaking duo Cliqua and centered on musician Iván Cornejo, the film follows a journey to Mexico in search of inspiration connected to his roots.

The film places Cornejo’s music and cultural connection at the center of the story. Mexico is more than a backdrop: the journey is framed as a search for inspiration and a deeper connection with his heritage. The result is a piece of filmmaking first and a camera demonstration second.

How Apple says the film was made

Apple also released a making-of video describing the production and highlighting several iPhone 15 Pro Max capabilities:

  • Action mode: Used for moving sequences where additional stabilization was important. It is designed to reduce camera shake during motion, but it is not identical to a mechanical gimbal and its results can vary with lighting and movement.
  • Cinematic mode: Used for computational focus transitions and a simulated depth-of-field effect. It can create a cinematic-looking change of focus, but it does not render depth in exactly the same way as a large-sensor cinema camera and lens.
  • 5x optical zoom: The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s dedicated telephoto camera helped create tighter compositions or frame more distant subjects. That does not mean every shot used the 5x camera.
  • Low-light performance: The making-of material emphasizes evening and moodier imagery, presenting the phone’s ability to capture useful video in darker conditions. Apple does not provide a quantified low-light test in the material described here.

These are examples of the features Apple chose to showcase, not independent measurements proving that the phone performs like a professional cinema camera in every situation.

What “shot entirely on iPhone” means

Apple’s claim concerns the camera used to capture the film: the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It should not automatically be read to mean that the production used only a bare handheld phone.

The official wording does not establish that the crew worked without tripods, rigs, mounts, stabilizers, lights, microphones, filters, external monitoring, storage, professional operators, or other filmmaking tools. Nor does it establish that the finished film avoided editing, color grading, sound mixing, visual effects, or other post-production.

That distinction matters. ¡Suerte! demonstrates what an experienced production team can achieve with the iPhone 15 Pro Max as its capture camera. It does not prove that the handset alone can replace every part of a conventional film-production workflow, or that an inexperienced user will automatically achieve the same result.

Where ¡Suerte! fits in Apple’s filmmaking campaign

The film continues Apple’s long-running “Shot on iPhone” strategy, which uses professional productions to show how far the company’s phones can be pushed as video tools. The iPhone 15 Pro line had already been featured in Apple’s “Scary Fast” Mac event production, a behind-the-scenes video connected to the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show, and Olivia Rodrigo’s “get him back!” music video.

Those examples provide useful context, but ¡Suerte! was not Apple’s first iPhone film. The available contemporaneous coverage identifies Rodrigo’s video as the first iPhone 15 Pro film in this sequence.

What the film proves—and what it does not

¡Suerte! is a strong demonstration of the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s flexibility: stabilization for movement, computational focus effects, a dedicated telephoto camera, and usable low-light capture can all contribute to a polished short film.

Its larger lesson is about workflow rather than hardware alone. The final image also depends on direction, performance, staging, lighting, sound, camera operation, editing, and finishing. For mobile filmmakers, the film is best understood as evidence that a phone can serve as the central capture device in an ambitious production—not as evidence that professional technique and equipment no longer matter.
