Looking for a Flixtor replacement? Start with official services rather than unstable mirror sites. In the U.S., Tubi is the best general on-demand choice, while Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex and Kanopy cover live channels, personal media and library-backed films. “Free” usually means advertising or eligibility through a participating library, and catalogs change as licenses change.
Updated August 18, 2026. Availability, devices and catalogs vary by country, so the examples below are U.S.-focused.
Quick comparison
| Service | Best for | Business model | On-demand | Live channels | Signup or eligibility | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | Most viewers | Ad-supported | Strong | Secondary | Usually optional for basic viewing | Rotating catalog and commercial breaks |
| Pluto TV | Channel surfing | Ad-supported | Yes | Strong | Usually optional | Specific titles can be slower to find |
| The Roku Channel | Movies, shows and live TV together | Free section plus paid add-ons | Yes | Strong | Varies by device and title | Free and paid offerings are mixed |
| Plex | Streaming plus personal media | Free streaming plus optional paid features | Yes | Yes | Account useful; personal-media setup is optional | More features and possible content confusion |
| Kanopy | Library-backed films | Institution-supported | Yes | Not the focus | Participating library, college or university | Eligibility and play limits vary |
Large title and channel counts advertised by services are time-sensitive claims, not permanent guarantees. A film can disappear when a territorial or time-limited license ends.
1. Tubi: best overall Flixtor alternative
Tubi is the closest legal match for the simple “open a site and search for something” experience. Tubi describes its service as free and legal, funded by advertising, with no subscription fee or credit-card requirement. Read its explanation at Tubi’s help center, or start at tubitv.com.

- Devices: Web, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming players and game consoles; the exact list can change.
- Trade-off: Licensing changes by region and time. Tubi cannot reliably provide every new theatrical film or premium series.
Tubi itself says viewers should not encounter the malicious redirects and security warnings associated with some unofficial sites. That is Tubi’s own safety statement, not an independent malware audit, so use normal browser caution.
2. Pluto TV: best for free live channels
Pluto TV’s U.S. service combines hundreds of live channels with thousands of on-demand movies and shows, supported by commercial breaks rather than a subscription charge.
- Best for: Channel surfing, themed programming and scheduled viewing.
- Account: A profile can support favorites and synchronization, but payment is not required to watch.
- Trade-off: Its linear-channel design can be less efficient when you already know the exact movie or episode you want.
Pluto’s lineup and even its availability differ by country. Treat it as a live-TV-style service with an on-demand section, not simply as another conventional movie library.

3. The Roku Channel: best free channel-and-movie hub

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Best for: A single interface mixing on-demand viewing and live channels.
- Cost: A substantial free catalog exists, but some programs require a rental, purchase or premium subscription.
- Device note: The service is not limited to Roku hardware, although web, app, device and regional support can differ.
- Trade-off: Free and paid content sit within the same broader service, which can be confusing if you do not check each listing.
4. Plex: best for free streaming plus personal media
Plex’s free-TV service advertises more than 600 live channels and more than 50,000 free on-demand titles. Plex also provides tools for organizing media you lawfully own. Its legal guidance is at Plex Support.
- Best for: Viewers who want free internet streaming and may also organize a personal collection.
- Cost: The streaming catalog has a free tier; optional Plex Pass features are separate.
- Important boundary: Plex’s personal-media tools do not authorize uploading or sharing pirated files. Media provided by users must be licensed or lawfully owned and viewable by them.
- Trade-off: Plex’s broader feature set can make it less immediately simple than Tubi, and searching Plex does not mean every requested title is included.
Plex’s pages distinguish free streaming from other live-TV and premium functionality. Do not assume every channel or feature is included at no cost.

5. Kanopy: best library-backed, film-focused option
Kanopy is the strongest choice for documentaries, independent films, classics and educational viewing when your public library or school participates.
- Eligibility: A participating library card or college/university login is generally required; Kanopy is not universally free for every household.
- Advertising: Its institution-supported model is designed around viewing without conventional commercial breaks, but policies and limits are set by the participating institution.
- Trade-off: Monthly play limits, eligibility and catalog depth vary, and Kanopy is not designed to guarantee the newest commercial releases.
Honorable mention: Hoopla
Hoopla is another library-supported option. Participating libraries may offer movies and television alongside ebooks, audiobooks, music, comics and BingePasses. It can be a better fit than Kanopy when you want a broad digital-library service, but borrowing rules and catalogs vary by institution.

Are Flixtor alternatives legal?
The services above are official platforms with identifiable ad-supported or institution-supported models. Unofficial sites that offer recent copyrighted movies without clearly identifying a licensing relationship are a different category. A site being reachable, popular or free does not prove it has permission to stream a title. Availability, ownership and legal rules can vary by country, so this article does not make a universal legal determination about every Flixtor domain or mirror.

Why legal free services have fewer new releases
Film and television rights are licensed by territory and viewing window. New movies commonly pass through theatrical, rental, purchase and paid-subscription windows before a free, ad-supported license becomes available. Free platforms therefore emphasize rotating catalog titles, older releases, niche programming and selected current episodes rather than promising every blockbuster or complete premium-series library.
Warning signs of an unofficial streaming site
These signs do not prove infringement by themselves, but they raise security, privacy and copyright concerns:
- Prompts to install a codec, APK, browser extension or unknown player.
- Several fake play buttons, aggressive redirects or notification-permission requests.
- Pop-ups claiming your device is infected.
- Requests for payment-card details to unlock supposedly free content.
- Constantly changing domains or names that imitate a known service.
- No clear company identity, rights information, privacy policy or support channel.
Legitimate services should not require mystery downloads to play ordinary video in a current browser. Do not treat a VPN as a copyright solution: it is not required to make an authorized service legal, does not grant permission to watch unauthorized content, and can cause location or playback problems under a service’s terms.

What “free” means on these services
- Ad-supported: Tubi and Pluto TV exchange viewing time for commercial breaks.
- Mixed free and paid: The Roku Channel and Plex include free offerings alongside premium options or features.
- Institution-supported: Kanopy and Hoopla depend on participating libraries or schools and may impose borrowing or play limits.
Watching without an account is different from creating one for watchlists and synchronization, and both differ from authenticating with a library card or university login.
International availability and accessibility
Catalogs, channels, advertisements, device apps, captions, audio description and account rules can vary by country, title, device and rights agreement. The recommendations here use U.S. examples. Check the service’s current app and support pages in your country, and verify accessibility features before relying on a platform for a specific need.
