The split-view YouTube Music Now Playing redesign is no longer merely a December 2025 experiment. Reports published April 23, 2026 described a broad rollout on Android and iOS, associated with YouTube Music 9.14 on Android and 9.15 on iPhone. Delivery is server-side, so those versions do not guarantee that every account will see the same screen. Google was still testing a separate fullscreen album-art treatment in July 2026, making “widely rolled out” more accurate than “final.”
What changed in the Now Playing screen?
The design reported on December 20, 2025 reorganized the player around a queue-focused lower pane. Its main changes were:
| Earlier arrangement | Reported redesign |
|---|---|
| Text-forward Song/Video switcher | Icon-based Song and Video controls |
| Thin progress bar with a conventional playhead | Rounded, thicker scrubber container; the active scrubber grows thicker while dragging |
| Up Next, Lyrics and Related tabs | Up Next becomes the main lower section; Lyrics moves into the action carousel; Related opens from the track title |
| Separate queue view | Queue can rise beneath the player in a dual-pane or split-view layout |
Album artwork is slightly larger, while the principal playback controls and horizontal action carousel remain in roughly the same area. The queue label can reflect the active album, playlist or mix rather than always saying “Up Next.”

Did Google actually adopt it?
Yes, in the sense that the split-view design became a widely rolling-out interface. No, if “adopt” means Google has stopped experimenting with the player.

- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
- November 2024: testing of new Now Playing layouts reportedly began.
- June 2025: the design was still changing, including experiments with thumbs-up and thumbs-down placement (report).
- September 2025: an earlier dual-pane version began rolling out (report).
- December 20, 2025: a newer variant was described as a possible direction, but it was not widely available at that point (report).
- April 14–23, 2026: the split-view version entered a broader rollout, with the April 23 report calling it widely available (report).
- July 16–28, 2026: Google was still testing a fullscreen album-art treatment and then a revision that reduced artwork size and removed it from behind the controls and progress bar (report).
These are related iterations, not proof of one permanent final design. The July test does not establish that fullscreen artwork replaced split view for everyone.
How to use the reported split-view player
- Start a song in YouTube Music and tap the miniplayer to open the expanded Now Playing screen.
- Use the Song/Video icon switcher, where it is present, to change between the available playback modes.
- Swipe the horizontal action carousel to find controls such as Lyrics, Download, Save, Share, Radio, comments and thumbs up or down.
- Tap the song title or its right-facing chevron to open Related content. The old Related tab is not the entry point in this layout.
- Open the Up Next area to inspect the queue. In the reported design, swiping upward anywhere in the player, including near its top, raises the queue partway beneath the controls.
- Swipe upward a second time when you need the fuller, queue-focused view.
Gesture placement and available actions can vary by account, platform and experiment, so these steps describe the reported design rather than a guarantee for every device.

What the redesign improves—and what it costs
Potential benefits
- The queue can be visible without completely abandoning the Now Playing context.
- Song and Video icons may be quicker to recognize than a text-only switcher.
- A thicker scrubber provides a larger touch target, particularly while dragging.
- Album, playlist or mix context is brought closer to the queue.
- Removing the separate lower tab row creates one consolidated player surface.
These are interface judgments, not published measurements. There is no supplied Google data proving gains in engagement, retention or accessibility.
Reported drawbacks
- Lyrics is no longer a persistent tab, so it must be located in the carousel.
- Save and other actions can sit off-screen until you scroll horizontally.
- The split-view gesture may feel less predictable than a dedicated queue button.
- Reaching the full queue can require a second swipe.
- Some users described the lower player area as visually empty or unbalanced.
- Removing persistent Lyrics and Related tabs disrupts established muscle memory.
- Without a traditional playhead, the exact playback position can be less visually explicit.
- Different experiments make screenshots and help instructions inconsistent between users.
The objections above reflect user feedback attached to the April rollout report, not a measured consensus.

Where did Lyrics and Related go?
Lyrics
In the reported rollout, Lyrics appears in the horizontal action carousel, immediately after the thumbs-up/down control. That placement is a visual change only; access policy is a separate issue. A February 2026 report said lyrics access was becoming subject to YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium for many users, with a limited number of free views in the tested or rolling-out experience. It should not be treated as a consequence of the redesign itself (report).

Availability on Android and iPhone
The April 2026 report associated the broad rollout with YouTube Music version 9.14 on Android and 9.15 on iOS. Those numbers identify versions involved in the report, not permanent requirements. The feature was controlled server-side, which means two people on the same app version can receive different Now Playing designs, and updating alone may not activate it.
- Android and iOS may receive different variants.
- Phone and tablet layouts may differ.
- Account-level feature flags can change rollout timing.
- Music, podcast, casting, Bluetooth, Android Auto and CarPlay surfaces may not match the phone player.
- A new split view can coexist with a separate fullscreen-art experiment.
If the new interface is missing
- Update YouTube Music from your device’s app store.
- Fully close and reopen the app.
- On Android, use Settings → Apps → YouTube Music → Force stop, then relaunch.
- Dismiss the current queue and start playback again.
- When comparing with another user, check the same account, device type and platform.
- Send a reproducible description through YouTube Music’s in-app feedback tools.
Force-stopping, removing the app from multitasking or restarting helped some users trigger a new interface, but none is a guaranteed switch for a server-side rollout. Reinstalling can remove downloads and offline data and is not a reliable way to leave an experiment.

- Smart Touch Control and Wide Compatibility: These wireless Bluetooth earbuds feature a high-precision touch sensor, offering greater accuracy than similar products. A simple tap allows you to control playback/pause, volume, song switching, calls, and voice assistants, minimizing accidental touches. The in-ear running headphones are compatible with most Bluetooth devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops, and connect effortlessly with Android 4.4, iOS 8.0 and above, or Bluetooth 4.0 and above
- Ergonomic and IPX7 Waterproof: Thanks to an ultra-light nano coating, these wireless Bluetooth earbuds are IPX7 waterproof and dustproof—perfect for workouts or outdoor adventures. The ergonomic in-ear design provides a secure, comfortable fit while keeping outside noise out, letting you immerse yourself fully in your music
If controls seem to have disappeared
- Scroll the action carousel horizontally; Lyrics, Save, Download, Share, Radio and comments may not fit at once.
- Tap the song title or chevron for Related.
- Swipe upward a second time if the queue rises only halfway.
- For casting or in-car playback, check the relevant device’s media controls because it may expose a different player surface.
Is there a way to restore the old player?
No documented official setting switches between the old and new Now Playing layouts. Users generally receive the server-side design assigned to their account. If the new screen is disruptive, use the miniplayer for basic playback, open a queue from the library or playlist context, rely on system media or voice controls, or manage queues on YouTube Music’s web player. Feedback is more useful when it identifies a specific problem—such as “Lyrics takes too many gestures to reach”—rather than simply saying the redesign is disliked.
What to expect next
The April rollout makes split view the main reported direction, but the July fullscreen-art experiment shows that Google was still adjusting the player months later. Treat the current layout as broadly deployed rather than permanently settled. Queue synchronization across Android, iOS and the web is a separate development described here: 9to5Google’s January 2026 report.
