If YouTube Live Control Room says your 24/7 stream is “waiting for encoder,” first verify that the encoder is sending to the correct broadcast with the current stream key. Then use the timestamped errors beside stream health and the encoder’s own output to distinguish a configuration or encoder problem from an outbound connection issue. The status alone does not identify the cause, and YouTube’s published guidance does not define a 24/7-specific fix for this exact wording.
Before changing anything, identify the broadcast’s state
Check the event currently selected in Live Control Room and establish whether it is scheduled, waiting for a signal, already live, or ended. “Waiting for encoder” by itself does not establish that the broadcast has ended or explain what a restart would do to the event, stream page, or archive. Avoid restarting or changing keys until you have checked the event and the current error details.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance addresses third-party encoder start errors, encoder checks, outbound connectivity, and reporting persistent problems. Its live streaming error messages guide explains the errors shown in Live Control Room. Neither source defines the quoted waiting status as a diagnosis or provides a special recovery procedure for 24/7 streams.
Check the broadcast, destination, and stream key
- Confirm the channel and selected broadcast. In Live Control Room, make sure you are viewing the intended channel and event, not another scheduled stream.
- Compare the encoder’s destination and key with the current stream details. YouTube tells third-party encoder users to obtain a stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder when troubleshooting an error starting the encoder. Check both the selected ingest destination/server and the key.
- If the key may be invalid or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes managing stream settings. A reset changes the key the encoder must use, so update the encoder with the new key before expecting it to send to that broadcast.
Read the Live Control Room error and timestamp
Look beside the stream-health indicator for timestamped errors. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear there; red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting, while yellow errors can degrade stream quality. Use the error wording and time as evidence rather than guessing from the waiting status alone.

If Live Control Room reports a format error
YouTube’s error guide identifies a format error when the encoder sends something other than H.264 video and AAC audio. Set the encoder to H.264 for video and AAC for audio, then check whether the error clears and the stream signal is accepted.
If the error points elsewhere
Follow the specific message in YouTube’s error guide. Do not change bitrate or resolution simply because the status says it is waiting; the status alone does not establish a format or quality problem.

Separate encoder output from connection problems
Inspect what the encoder is actually sending
- Confirm the encoder is running and the intended output is active.
- Check the outgoing picture and sound directly in the encoder, plus its error log.
- Review CPU load for signs the machine is struggling to encode.
- If available, inspect a local recording or archive to see whether the encoder is producing the expected output.
- Update the encoder software. If the output problem remains unexplained, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.
Test the outbound internet path
If the encoder’s output appears healthy, follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps to test outbound internet connectivity. If that test finds a problem, contact your internet service provider. This is a conditional network check, not evidence that every waiting status is caused by an internet fault.
For timeout or SSL errors, verify RTMPS details
If the encoder specifically reports connection timeouts or SSL trouble and supports RTMPS, compare its server URL, protocol, and port with the current details shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers encrypted stream connections. Use the values for the current broadcast rather than assuming an old URL or encoder preset is still correct.

Use a careful recovery order for a 24/7 broadcast
- Record or note the broadcast state, the visible error text, and its timestamp.
- Verify channel, broadcast selection, ingest destination, and stream key.
- Correct a specific reported format or connection issue, rather than applying unrelated settings changes.
- Inspect encoder output, logs, CPU load, and a local recording if available; update the encoder where appropriate.
- Test outbound connectivity if encoder output looks healthy, and contact the ISP if the test identifies a problem.
- If the fault persists, use YouTube’s report-a-problem route or contact the encoder vendor if evidence points to its software.
There is no established universal waiting duration or restart fix for this exact status. The official guidance does not say how restarting affects a scheduled broadcast, stream page, or archive, so confirm the event state before interrupting a live or scheduled setup.
