If an encoder error is shown, follow its instructions; for a third-party encoder using a stream key, confirm that the key in the encoder matches the one in Control Room, then reconnect the encoder. Reset the key only when needed—not as a routine fix. If the event has ended, set up or manage a stream again; YouTube does not guarantee that every interrupted or ended event can resume as the same live session.
Diagnose the interruption before restarting
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Select the affected stream and open its Stream view or dashboard.
- Read the current status and stream-health message before changing settings. YouTube’s status messages may identify a specific problem and suggest what to do.
Separate three cases: an encoder reports a start or connection error; the encoder is connected through a third-party app’s YouTube sign-in rather than a stream key; or the live event has ended. The right recovery depends on which case applies.
Restart a stream that is still active
If your encoder uses a stream key
- In Live Control Room, find the affected stream’s Stream key area and copy the key for that stream configuration.
- Open your encoder and paste in the matching key. Check for accidental spaces or a key copied from a different stream.
- Start or reconnect the encoder. If the stream setup requires it, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
- Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and check the stream-health status again.
If Control Room displays a specific error, use its guidance rather than repeatedly restarting without addressing the reported cause. A connection or encoder fault may persist even when the key is correct.
If the encoder signs in to YouTube through a third-party app
YouTube directs users of sign-in-based streaming software to that app’s support team if it has trouble connecting; the software may need an update. Its reconnect or retry controls are specific to that encoder. Do not assume that copying or resetting a stream key will repair a sign-in-based connection.

When to reset the stream key
Reset the key only if you have a reason to replace it or the troubleshooting instructions call for it. In Live Control Room, go to Stream → Stream key → Reset. Copy the new key and replace the old one in the encoder before trying to connect again. Resetting a key does not by itself fix network or encoder problems, and the encoder will fail to authenticate if it still has the old key.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. If you lack the required role, ask an owner or manager to perform the reset and provide the updated key through an appropriate secure channel.

If the live event has ended
Use the relevant stream setup and management flow in Live Control Room to create or manage a stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping the content from the encoder and, in a scheduled flow, selecting End Stream. They do not establish that an ended event can always be restarted as the same session. Plan for the possibility that a new stream setup or event will be needed, and do not promise viewers that their existing player will resume automatically.
What the 12-hour guidance means for a 24/7 channel
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Separately, it says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Those statements concern archiving and viewer rewind; they do not establish that YouTube automatically stops every stream at 12 hours. For a continuous channel, test the chosen encoder’s segmentation, reconnect, archive, and viewer-continuity behavior before relying on it.

Reduce the chance of another interruption
- Test the complete setup before relying on it. Confirm that the encoder connects and that the intended stream appears in Control Room.
- Monitor stream health while live. Read status messages and address errors when they appear.
- Check local archive files. YouTube recommends verifying that local recordings are being saved when you rely on them.
- Test backup failover if you have a backup encoder. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that playback rolls over to the backup. Configure and test this behavior; do not assume it works automatically.
- For higher-production events, consider the appropriate hardware setup. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production streams, but hardware alone does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
- Use content you have rights to stream. A stable connection does not resolve copyright or other YouTube policy issues; this recovery workflow cannot determine whether particular material is permitted.
