Short answer: Vultr has the more clearly documented route for hosting a remote OBS-based stream: its Broadcaster Marketplace app is designed for livestreaming and its guide calls for a GPU instance. DigitalOcean lists video streaming as a possible Droplet workload, but the available product information does not identify a Droplet configuration proven for a particular 24/7 stream. Neither provider can be called the universal winner for reliability, picture quality, latency, or cost without knowing your stream settings and testing the chosen region and instance.
The right comparison is not just the monthly virtual machine price. It is the whole setup: whether the server encodes or relays your video, required compute, outgoing transfer, region, recovery plan, and the work you are willing to do to keep the stream running.
What each provider offers for a 24/7 stream
| Decision point | Vultr | DigitalOcean |
|---|---|---|
| Documented streaming path | Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace app packages OBS for remote operation and supports livestream destinations including YouTube. The setup guide calls for a GPU instance. | DigitalOcean identifies video streaming as a potential Droplet workload, but the cited product information does not prescribe an OBS workflow. |
| Evidence for a specific encoding workload | The guide gives a GPU-based deployment path, but that is not proof of a particular resolution, frame rate, or bitrate on every instance. | DigitalOcean lists shared and dedicated CPU classes; the cited material does not establish a configuration for a particular 24/7 encoding workload. |
| Outbound transfer billing | Vultr documents a charge of $0.01 per GB beyond a plan’s allocated quota. Its bandwidth documentation also describes account-level allocations; check the rules for the specific product and account. | DigitalOcean documents a charge of $0.01 per GiB beyond included transfer. Droplet transfer allowance and use are pooled at team level. |
| Reliability comparison | No like-for-like evidence establishes which provider produces fewer dropped frames, better YouTube ingest, lower stream latency, or more reliable 24/7 output. Validate the target region and instance with your own stream. | |
These are infrastructure options, not replacements for YouTube as the publishing destination. The VPS hosts the software and video workflow that sends the feed to YouTube.
How much bandwidth a 24/7 YouTube stream uses
Estimate transfer from the outgoing bitrate before choosing an instance. A stream at bitrate B megabits per second sends roughly B Ă— 10.8 GB over 30 days, using decimal gigabytes and assuming a steady feed for all 24 hours of every day. This follows from bitrate divided by eight to get megabytes per second, then multiplying by the number of seconds in 30 days. Add headroom for protocol overhead, restarts, and any additional outbound traffic; actual provider billing units and measurement may differ.

- At 6 Mbps, it is about 64.8 TB per 30-day month.
These are planning estimates, not provider measurements or a promise of exact billable usage. They assume the listed bitrate remains constant around the clock. Variable-bitrate content, multiple outputs, and interruptions change actual totals. Compare the estimate with the selected plan’s outbound allowance, then use the provider dashboard to track real transfer after launch.
DigitalOcean’s transfer accounting
DigitalOcean says each Droplet plan includes outbound transfer. Allowance and usage are pooled at the team level, accrue according to how long a Droplet exists, and do not roll over. Outbound use beyond the allowance is billed at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free. Read the current DigitalOcean bandwidth billing rules before estimating the bill, especially if other Droplets share the team pool.

Vultr’s transfer accounting
Vultr documents overage at $0.01 per GB beyond the allocated quota. Its bandwidth cap guidance describes a monthly account allocation of 2 TB of free bandwidth per account, resetting monthly without rollover, as well as hourly accrual of instance allocations. Confirm the current plan and account rules rather than assuming the account allocation will cover a continuous high-bitrate feed. See Vultr’s overage rate and Vultr’s cap calculation.
GB and GiB are not identical units, and the providers describe their allowances and pooling differently. Do not compare a headline transfer number without checking its unit, eligible product, and accounting period.

Compute, encoding, and region matter as much as price
First decide what the server will do. If it encodes video, the required CPU or GPU depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and bitrate. If it only relays an already encoded stream, its compute needs may differ, but outbound bandwidth remains substantial. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide documents a GPU deployment; it does not guarantee a given workload will run well on every GPU instance. DigitalOcean’s cited pages do not establish an instance suitable for a specified encoding job.
For price context, DigitalOcean’s VPS page lists a Premium Droplet example from $7/month with 1 GiB memory, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe storage, and 1,000 GB transfer. That is a published example, not a recommendation or evidence that it can encode a particular stream. A continuous stream’s transfer estimate can quickly exceed a plan allowance, so compute price alone is an incomplete comparison.

Before committing, check the live plan price, regional availability, transfer policy, GPU or dedicated-resource availability, storage, backups, and any overage terms. Vultr notes that pricing can vary by data-center location; verify the region and current price on its pricing page and regional pricing guidance. Choose a region based on server availability and a practical route to YouTube ingest, then test it: the cited material does not establish a universally best region or latency result.

- Choose Vultr first if you want an officially documented OBS Marketplace deployment path and are prepared to select and validate a GPU instance for your workload.
- Consider DigitalOcean if you already use Droplets or prefer its VPS environment, and can independently determine a suitable configuration and verify the total transfer cost.
- Choose neither on price alone until you have modeled outgoing data at your actual bitrate and checked how each provider applies pooled allowances and overages.
- Test before relying on either for continuous programming: run the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate from the intended region, monitor the YouTube stream health and server load, and verify that your process restarts correctly after a failure.
Vultr has the stronger documented streaming workflow in the material available here; that is a documentation advantage, not proof it is cheaper, more stable, or better-performing. DigitalOcean expressly names streaming as a use case, but does not validate a specific configuration for your stream. There is no supported blanket reliability winner.

Keep copyright and YouTube policy in the plan
A VPS does not grant rights to the video or music you stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, footage, and any material included in a loop. A technically continuous stream can still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted by a rights holder. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running broadcast. Also consider whether the material is sufficiently original and valuable for your channel; technical uptime does not establish compliance with YouTube monetization or reused-content policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing continuously on YouTube rather than manage a VPS and OBS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
