Yes—but “shot on an iPhone 15” is shorthand. 28 Years Later was filmed extensively with modified iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max units, reportedly including a custom rig capable of mounting up to 20 phones. It was not filmed entirely with stock phones, and the iPhone was only one part of a professional camera, lighting, sound and post-production system.
That distinction matters because the trailer is impressive not because a phone magically became a cinema camera. Danny Boyle, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, screenwriter Alex Garland and their wider crew used the phone’s size, speed and unusual multi-camera possibilities to make a major sequel feel immediate, unstable and physically close to its characters.
The trailer’s visual idea is bigger than its camera
Sony Pictures released the first official trailer on December 10, 2024, ahead of the film’s advertised theatrical release on June 20, 2025. It reunites Boyle and Garland in the world of 28 Days Later, following survivors living under quarantine and a journey from an island into an infected mainland. The principal cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes, with Cillian Murphy credited as an executive producer.

The footage works because several elements reinforce one another: kinetic movement, abrupt changes in perspective, rural scale, threatening silhouettes, night imagery, sound design and fast escalation. The camera can make the viewer feel close to the action, but so can editing, production design, performances, lighting and the final color grade. The phone is an enabling tool—not the sole explanation for the trailer’s impact.
What was actually filmed on an iPhone?
The most accurate description is that substantial portions of 28 Years Later were captured with modified iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max cameras, with the Pro Max generally identified in reporting as the principal model. Other cameras and equipment were also used, including specialized rigs, drones and action cameras where the scene required them.
So these claims are misleading:
- “The entire movie was filmed on an iPhone 15.”
- “It was made with the standard iPhone 15.”
- “Every trailer image came directly from a bare retail phone.”
A better formulation is: the film used modified iPhone 15 Pro-series units as a major part of its principal camera workflow, alongside other capture systems. “Shot on iPhone” describes the production’s photographic approach; it does not mean a crew pointed an untouched consumer phone at every scene.
Why Boyle and Dod Mantle chose the format
Boyle directed the sequel, Garland wrote it and Dod Mantle served as cinematographer. Their decision connects naturally to the first 28 Days Later, whose rough digital-video aesthetic helped make its empty streets, frantic movement and infected attackers feel immediate and documentary-like. Boyle and Dod Mantle had also worked together on projects including Slumdog Millionaire.

The iPhone offered several practical and creative advantages:

- 10FT Military Grade Protection:10FT military drop protection for iPhone 15 Pro case. Hard PC backplate, flexible shockproof TPU bumpers, and 4 corner airbags absorb heavy impacts from accidental falls
- A small footprint: Compact cameras can fit into confined, exposed or dangerous locations more easily than a conventional cinema package.
- Speed: A lightweight setup can reduce the friction between an idea and a captured shot.
- Multiple viewpoints: Several synchronized phones can record an event at the same time, giving the edit unusual angles and making fast action harder to predict.
- Freedom around performers: A small rig can provide more physical access around actors and locations.
- Immediate perspective: The format suits a story about panic, pursuit and witnessing events at close range.
This was a creative and logistical decision, not simply an Apple product demonstration. The production did not become automatically cheap because its camera bodies were small. Rigs, lenses, lighting, operators, monitoring, data handling, synchronization and post-production still require a substantial feature-film operation.
How the multi-iPhone rig changed the possibilities
Reporting from the Los Angeles Times describes a custom system capable of mounting upwards of 20 iPhones. That should be understood as a specialized multi-camera production rig, not a collection of phones casually taped together.
The phones could capture simultaneous views of an event. That can be valuable for action because a dangerous or unpredictable moment may be recorded from many positions without requiring repeated performances. It also creates editorial options: a cut can jump between perspectives that share the same instant, producing disorientation or a heightened sense of threat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe workflow itself needed engineering. Early operation reportedly involved manually turning units on, while software was later developed to coordinate them more efficiently. Accessories, cages, lens attachments, monitoring and synchronization were essential to making the array usable on a feature set.
The technical foundation: ProRes, Apple Log and USB-C
The iPhone 15 Pro models were viable for this kind of work partly because they support production-oriented recording options. Apple documents support for Apple ProRes, Apple Log and recording ProRes to external storage through USB-C. With compatible external storage, the phones can record 4K ProRes at up to 60 frames per second.

Apple’s ProRes documentation explains the supported formats, models and storage requirements. Apple’s professional iPhone production example also illustrates how external recording, timecode and specialist camera software can fit into a larger workflow. It is not evidence of how every shot in 28 Years Later was made.
ProRes preserves more data for editing and color work than highly compressed consumer formats, while Apple Log is designed to retain grading flexibility. The Blackmagic Camera app can provide more traditional controls over exposure, focus, frame rate and recording on compatible iPhones.
None of that makes the phone equivalent to every cinema camera. Image quality still depends on lighting, exposure, lenses, stabilization, highlight handling, rolling shutter, noise, color grading and the decisions made by the cinematography team. ProRes also produces very large files, making fast storage and disciplined data management important.

A smartphone body does not eliminate the needs of a film production. The cameras still require professional mounting, filtration, monitoring and operators. Scenes may demand other cameras, drones or action-camera systems. Lighting must be designed around the sensor’s strengths and limits, particularly in dark scenes and high-contrast conditions.
The finished theatrical image is also not the same thing as ungraded phone footage. Editing, sound design, visual effects, color work, production design and performances shape what audiences ultimately see. The trailer’s menace comes from the interaction of all those elements.

That is why the trailer does not prove that an iPhone is simply “as good as a cinema camera.” It demonstrates something more useful: an experienced team can build a major production around a small camera and exploit its particular strengths.
Does this change smartphone filmmaking?
It lowers the psychological barrier to taking phone cinematography seriously. A compact camera can be useful for independent filmmakers, documentaries, action scenes, confined locations and projects where speed matters more than a traditional cinema package.
But the lesson is not “buy the same phone and reproduce the movie.” A practical professional setup may involve a compatible iPhone, a manual camera app, fast external storage, reliable audio, monitoring, stabilization, lighting and—only when justified—a synchronized multi-camera system. A phone can reduce physical bulk without reducing the demands of cinematography.
Readers considering an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max in 2026 should also verify current availability independently: those models may no longer be in Apple’s primary lineup, and no current price should be assumed. Newer Pro models may offer a longer support horizon or different recording capabilities.
Verdict
28 Years Later was not “an entire Hollywood sequel filmed on a normal iPhone 15.” It was a large production that used modified iPhone 15 Pro-series cameras extensively, sometimes in an ambitious multi-phone rig, while also relying on conventional filmmaking infrastructure.
