Bandcamp is excellent for finding complete albums, niche genres and independent musicians. Some releases offer higher-quality formats beyond MP3. However, receiving a music file generally grants listening access—not permission to synchronize it with a film, upload it in a video, redistribute it or use it in advertising.

Rights information is item-specific. Metadata may reflect an uploader’s description rather than a formal rights determination, and the presence of download formats does not itself establish permission to reuse an item in a film, podcast or commercial production.
Verdict: Excellent for archival research and personal listening; use additional rights verification before incorporating an item into a public or commercial production.
8. Jamendo Music and Jamendo Licensing
Jamendo Music is oriented toward independent artists and music discovery. Its separate Jamendo Licensing service is aimed at audiovisual projects, businesses, public spaces and other uses that may require formal commercial clearance.
Do not confuse free listening or downloading with a commercial license. A track that is suitable for personal use may not be cleared for a monetized documentary, advertisement, sponsored podcast, retail venue, app or client project.
Verdict: A strong independent-music destination, and a more appropriate licensing path when a production needs clearer commercial permissions than a general free-download catalog provides.

- Personal listening: Bandcamp free or name-your-price releases, Free Music Archive tracks with clear download controls, or artist-authorized SoundCloud downloads.
- Independent artists: Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Jamendo Music.
- Classical music: Musopen, with recording-level rights checks.
- Live and archival recordings: Internet Archive, with item-specific rights verification.
- YouTube videos: YouTube Audio Library or a Pixabay track whose license covers the project.
- Documentaries and podcasts: Pixabay, Free Music Archive or a dedicated licensing service; check synchronization, monetization, editing and distribution rights.
- Commercial projects: Start with a clearly licensed track or a service such as Jamendo Licensing rather than assuming a free download is commercially cleared.
- MP3 players and permanent files: Use an official file download from Bandcamp, Free Music Archive or another source that provides a standard audio file. App-based offline playback is not the same thing.

- Public-domain download: The relevant work or recording is no longer protected in the applicable jurisdiction. The composition and recording must be considered separately.
- Royalty-free music: A license may allow broad use without recurring royalties, but the copyright and restrictions remain.
- Offline streaming: Music is stored for playback inside an account or app. This does not create a transferable, permanent audio file.
How to check whether a download is legal for your project
- Open the official website, not a search-advertisement mirror or downloader.
- Search for the artist, track, album, genre or intended use.
- Open the individual track or release page.
- Use the site’s own Download, Free Download or equivalent control.
- Read the track-level license or usage terms.
- Check attribution, commercial use, editing, remixing, sampling, synchronization, redistribution and geographic restrictions.
- Record the artist, title, URL, license, attribution wording and download date.
- Download the file and scan it with your device’s normal security tools.
- Keep the license record with the documentary, podcast or other project files.
- If permission is unclear, do not use the track commercially. Choose a better-documented track or obtain written permission.
If a page has no download button, treat it as streaming-only. If a supposed music download is an installer or executable, cancel it. A normal music download should be an audio file or a clearly identified archive, not an unexpected program.
If a copyright claim appears later
“Royalty-free” does not guarantee that an automated copyright system will never flag a track. Review the saved license, attribution and source URL, then follow the platform’s dispute process or contact the rights holder. Do not delete your documentation.
Creative Commons licenses in plain language
Creative Commons is a family of licenses, not a synonym for unrestricted music. The official explanations are available at Creative Commons.
- BY: Attribution is required.
- NC: Commercial use is not allowed under that license.
- ND: Derivative adaptations are not allowed without additional permission.
- SA: Adaptations may need to be distributed under the same or a compatible license.
A documentary, sponsored podcast, monetized channel, paid course, advertisement, game or client project may count as commercial use depending on the circumstances. When in doubt, seek permission or select a track with explicit commercial clearance.

Sometimes. Download permission is only one part of the analysis. A documentary may require permission to synchronize the recording with images, edit or loop it, distribute the finished film, monetize it, show it publicly and license it to broadcasters or platforms.

For a personal or noncommercial project, a suitable Creative Commons or royalty-free license may be enough. For a commissioned, monetized or festival-bound production, retain the license record and confirm that the terms cover the full distribution plan. A formal licensing service may be safer than relying on a general free-download site.

Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music and similar services may offer free listening or app-based offline playback. Those features generally do not provide unrestricted MP3 or WAV files that you can transfer, edit, upload or keep independently of the service.
Do not use third-party stream-ripping services to bypass platform restrictions. They may violate platform terms, infringe copyright, expose you to deceptive advertising or deliver malware. For a permanent file, use an authorized download from the artist or platform.

Safety red flags
- Pages promising current commercial hits as free MP3s without identifying an artist or rights holder.
- Several oversized or misleading download buttons.
- Unexpected browser notifications, extensions or software installers.
- Sites with no license, ownership or artist information.
- Torrent indexes distributing copyrighted releases without permission.
- Third-party tools that claim to convert streams into downloadable files.
- A file type that does not match the expected audio download.
Use the official site and its official control. If the source cannot explain who owns the music or what the license permits, it is not a trustworthy recommendation.
Audio formats and mobile downloads
Format availability is release-specific. MP3 is compact and widely compatible. FLAC is lossless but larger. WAV is useful in production but consumes more storage. A lossless file cannot restore quality already lost in an earlier lossy encode, so source quality and licensing usually matter more than bitrate for casual listening.
Mobile behavior also differs. A browser may save a standard audio file to the device’s file system, while an app may only provide offline playback inside an account. The latter is not equivalent to a file that can be copied to an MP3 player, car stereo or desktop library.

Is Creative Commons music copyright-free?
