A black Prime Video screen can mean several different failures. If audio continues while the picture disappears, the leading suspects are protected-content playback (DRM/HDCP), browser or GPU rendering, an external display, adapter, receiver, mirroring, or a title-format problem. If the television reports “No signal,” investigate the HDMI chain. If the app itself opens black, start with the app, device software, cache, and account checks.
The fastest diagnosis is symptom-first: identify what is black, test another title and app, then remove one part of the playback chain at a time.
Identify which kind of black screen you have
| Symptom | Most likely area | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Audio plays but the movie image is black | DRM/HDCP, browser or GPU rendering, HDR format, adapter, mirroring, or recording software | Disconnect external displays and try another title in the native app |
| Prime Video controls remain visible but video is black | Player rendering or protected-video failure | Restart the app or browser and test hardware-acceleration settings |
| TV or monitor says “No signal” | HDMI cable, port, receiver, switch, dock, GPU mode, or HDCP handshake | Connect the source directly to the TV on another port |
| The entire computer display flashes or goes black | GPU driver, refresh rate, HDR, dock, or display renegotiation | Disconnect the second display or dock and restore a standard display mode |
| Only full-screen playback is black | Browser, GPU, HDR, or full-screen rendering | Test windowed playback and a private browser window |
| Only casting or mirroring is black | Protected-content restriction or unsupported mirroring route | Use the Prime Video app on the receiving device instead |
| Only 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision titles fail | Format support or HDCP 2.2 somewhere in the chain | Play an ordinary HD title and bypass the receiver |
| The app opens to a black screen | App state, firmware, compatibility, or network/account issue | Force-close, restart, update, and test another app |
First determine whether Prime Video or your setup is at fault
- Play a different Prime Video title.
- Open another streaming service on the same device.
- Try Prime Video on a second device.
- Use the same device without its external monitor, projector, adapter, dock, receiver, or switch.
- Try a different HDMI port and, where possible, a direct source-to-TV connection.
- If every title fails on one device, suspect that device, its app, or its display path.
- If one title fails, suspect a title-specific format or temporary service fault.
- If Prime Video fails on independent devices and networks, contact Amazon rather than repeatedly resetting hardware.
- If all streaming apps fail, investigate the TV, receiver, network, or source device instead of Prime Video alone.
Fixes to try, in the right order
1. Close playback completely
Exit Prime Video and reopen it. On a computer, close the entire browser, not only the tab. Amazon lists closing the app or browser as a first playback step (Amazon playback help).
2. Perform a full restart
Turn off the TV, streaming box, computer, phone, or tablet, wait at least 60 seconds, and power it on again. For HDMI systems, turn everything off, unplug the TV, source, receiver or soundbar, and accessories where practical, wait about a minute, then reconnect the source directly to the TV. Turn on the TV first and the source second. This is a diagnostic sequence, not a requirement that every device be unplugged.

3. Update every relevant layer
Install updates for Prime Video, the TV or streaming-device operating system, your computer and browser, Windows graphics drivers, and firmware for receivers, switches, docks, or adapters. Amazon documents Chrome’s update path as chrome://settings/help and Firefox’s as Menu → Help → About Firefox (Amazon playback help).
4. Simplify the HDMI and HDCP path
Temporarily remove HDMI switches, splitters, AV receivers, soundbars, capture cards, docks, and adapters. Connect the source directly to the television or monitor, try another HDMI port, and test a known-good cable. Disable screen mirroring, screen recording, remote-desktop tools, wireless-display software, and overlays.
HDCP is the copy-protection authentication between the source, cable, intermediate equipment, and display. Amazon specifies HDCP 1.4 for HD and HDCP 2.2 for UHD/HDR external playback (Amazon’s HDCP explanation). A failed authentication can produce an error, downgraded quality, audio without video, or a black picture. A working desktop or menu does not prove that protected playback can authenticate.

Do not buy an expensive cable before these tests. A bad port, adapter, receiver, GPU driver, display mode, or HDCP negotiation can be the real failure.

Play an ordinary HD title. If it works while UHD, HDR, or Dolby Vision titles fail, temporarily disable HDR or Dolby Vision on the source if that option exists, bypass the receiver or soundbar, and confirm that every device in the chain supports the selected format. Amazon says both the display and any additional connected device must support Dolby Vision for a Dolby Vision title (Amazon playback help).
6. Reset the app before resetting the device
Force-stop Prime Video, clear its cache, and restart the device. Clear app data only if needed: it can sign you out and remove local settings. Reinstall the app if updates and cache clearing do not help. Amazon forum staff have recommended updating, clearing cache or data, restarting, and reinstalling for smart-TV black-screen cases (Amazon forum guidance).

Use a factory reset only as a last resort. Amazon warns that it removes account information and downloaded content from apps (Amazon reset guidance).
7. Check the browser and GPU on a computer
- Try a current supported browser and a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, video enhancers, overlays, and screen-sharing tools.
- In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs and allow protected content. Chrome says blocking protected content can prevent playback and blocking identifiers can reduce quality on some services (Chrome help).
- Test hardware acceleration both enabled and disabled, restarting the browser after each change.
- Update the graphics driver and operating system, then restart the computer.
In Firefox, open Firefox → Settings → General → Performance, clear Use recommended performance settings, clear Use hardware acceleration when available, and restart. Mozilla lists this as a troubleshooting option for video problems, flickering, and driver-related crashes (Mozilla performance settings). Mozilla also recommends updating graphics drivers when acceleration or WebGL causes display problems (Mozilla driver guidance). Disabling acceleration is a test, not a universal fix; it can increase CPU use and reduce efficiency.
Also test with one monitor, a standard resolution and refresh rate, and no USB-C dock. Custom modes, HDR, multi-monitor arrangements, or a dock can trigger display renegotiation.

8. Check network and account conditions
Pause heavy network activity, restart the router, try another network, and disable VPN or proxy services while diagnosing. Amazon allows the same title to stream on up to two devices at a time (Amazon playback help). If Prime Video works on another network, Amazon says the local network or internet provider may be involved (Amazon connected-device help).
Slow internet usually causes buffering, pauses, or reduced quality. A stable soundtrack with a perfectly black picture points more strongly to rendering or protected playback than to speed alone.
9. Confirm computer support
Amazon lists browser playback on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux, generally up to HD, and apps for Windows 10/11 and Macs running macOS 11.4 or later. Availability varies by country, device, and app version, so verify the current requirements for your location (Amazon computer requirements).

Device-specific checks
Smart TV or streaming device
- Compare the built-in Prime Video app with another streaming app.
- Update firmware and the app, then clear cache or reinstall.
- If an external player is used, bypass every receiver, soundbar, switch, and adapter.
- Test an HD title before blaming the TV for a 4K/HDR failure.
Computer, external monitor, or projector
- Disconnect the second display, dock, capture device, and adapter.
- Test the laptop’s internal screen and another HDMI port.
- Close recording, remote-desktop, meeting, and overlay software.
- Try the native Prime Video app or another browser.
Casting and phone mirroring
Supported casting is not the same as generic screen mirroring. Protected video may appear as a black rectangle while menus, audio, or the rest of the phone screen remain visible. Use the official Prime Video app on the receiving TV or streaming device, or a supported cast function, instead of ordinary mirroring.
When should you replace a cable or device?
Replace a cable only after a direct connection works with another cable or the fault follows the original cable. Consider replacing an adapter, dock, receiver, or switch only when bypassing it restores playback and reconnecting it reliably recreates the failure. A dedicated streaming device can help when an old TV app is unstable or cannot handle the needed format, but it adds another HDMI/HDCP link and is not a first purchase.
Official product information is available from Amazon’s HDMI category, Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV 4K. These links do not establish that buying hardware will solve a particular black screen.
When to contact Amazon
Contact Amazon support when a title fails on multiple independent devices and networks, an Amazon error code appears, or the problem continues after updates, a restart, app reset, and direct-connection testing. Use Amazon customer service. A temporary service-side fault cannot be distinguished from local symptoms without testing more than one device and network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Start by separating black video from a “No signal” condition. Then relaunch and restart, test another title and app, bypass the HDMI chain, check HDCP and HDR compatibility, and only afterward reset software or replace hardware. Most cases do not justify buying a new TV or premium cable.
