Identify the problem before changing settings
Use this quick comparison to choose the most useful first test. These are likely causes, not guaranteed diagnoses.

The 10 fixes
1. Test the connection on the affected device
- Pause the video and open an ordinary website on the same phone, computer, TV or streaming device.
- Run a speed test on that device if possible.
- Repeat near the router and at the viewing location.
- Look for dropouts and fluctuating latency, not just one high speed result.
Jio’s legacy JioCinema FAQ advises checking the connection, opening a website and having at least 2 Mbps: JioCinema FAQ. Treat 2 Mbps as basic minimum guidance, not a guarantee for HD, 4K or live sports.
2. Stop competing bandwidth use
Temporarily pause large downloads and uploads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls, camera uploads, torrents, file synchronization, other streams and unused TVs or phones. A fast advertised plan can still suffer from Wi-Fi contention or a weak signal at the television.

3. Switch networks as a controlled test
Try Wi-Fi to mobile data, mobile data to trusted Wi-Fi, a phone hotspot, 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz (or the reverse), or Ethernet to Wi-Fi. Jio recommends trying another connection in its FAQ. If the alternate network works, troubleshoot the original one. A hotspot is a diagnostic test and may not be suitable for long viewing because of data limits or mobile fluctuations.
4. Set quality to Auto or lower it temporarily
Open the player’s quality control and choose Auto on an unstable connection, or select a lower resolution for testing. JioHotstar describes an adaptive player that changes quality with available bandwidth and also permits manual selection: JioHotstar About Us. Restore a higher setting only after playback remains stable; forcing 1080p or 4K can increase pauses.
5. Restart the app and the playback device
- Stop the stream and fully close JioHotstar.
- Remove it from recent apps where the platform allows.
- Restart the phone, computer, Smart TV, Fire TV, Chromecast or Android TV device.
- Open the app and test the same title again.
Restarting clears temporary memory, network and player states without deliberately deleting login data. Jio’s older playback guidance also recommends restarting the device: Jio playback FAQs.
6. Update every relevant app and system
Install the current JioHotstar app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, update the Smart TV app, Fire TV or Android TV software, browser, Chromecast firmware and (where offered) router firmware. JioHotstar’s requirements can change: India Terms of Use. Do not rely on an old JioCinema APK or an unsupported browser.

7. Clear cache, then reinstall only if necessary
On many Android, Android TV and Fire TV devices, use Settings → Apps → JioHotstar → Storage → Clear cache; wording varies. On iPhone or iPad, force-close, restart and update first, then delete and reinstall if needed. Smart TVs may offer app-management controls or require a reinstall.
For a Jio Set-top Box, Jio’s path is Home → Settings → Applications → Downloaded Apps → select the app → Clear Cache and Clear Data. Clear cache first. Clearing data or reinstalling can remove the session and require sign-in: Jio OTT quick fixes.
8. Restart the router or Jio Home Gateway
- Stop playback.
- Restart the router or Jio Home Gateway and wait for the connection to return fully.
- Test before reconnecting every household device.
Move the router closer to the TV or use Ethernet if the problem is location-specific. Do not factory-reset the router as a routine buffering fix; that can erase connection settings.
9. Check device, browser and HDMI/HDCP compatibility
JioHotstar’s current India terms list these stated environments, subject to change:

- Smart TVs need HDCP 1.4 for Full HD and HDCP 2.2 for 4K.
The same terms say mobile-browser streaming is not supported and may prompt an app installation. Manufacturer software and model support can still differ, so treat the list as a publication-date snapshot.
10. Refresh the session or entitlement, then contact support
- Sign out of JioHotstar, close it, reopen it and sign in again.
- On a Jio Set-top Box, check the active OTT subscription in MyJio and use the available subscription-refresh option when offered.
- Test the title again on a supported device.
- Report the title, device and model, app or browser version, network type, date and time, error text and a screenshot.
Jio’s Set-top Box instructions cover subscription checks and gateway restarts: Jio OTT quick fixes. Its entitlement FAQ explains credentials and supported access: Jio OTT login and entitlement FAQ. The old [email protected] address appears in legacy material and may be outdated; use the current in-app or website support route first.
Device-specific quick paths
Android phone or tablet
- Update JioHotstar.
- Force-close it.
- Use
Settings → Apps → JioHotstar → Storage → Clear cache. - Restart, then compare Wi-Fi with mobile data.
- Reinstall only if the problem remains.
iPhone or iPad
Update the app and iOS/iPadOS, force-close and reopen it, restart the device, test another network, then delete and reinstall if necessary.
Windows or Mac
Use an updated supported browser, temporarily disable unnecessary extensions, allow cookies and JavaScript, try a normal (not private) window, sign out and in, and test another supported browser.

Smart TV, Android TV, Fire TV or Chromecast
Restart the TV and streaming device, update software, clear cache where available, restart the router, test Ethernet or a closer Wi-Fi connection, and check HDMI/HDCP when HD or 4K fails. Reinstall the app as the final local step.
Jio Set-top Box
Check the OTT entitlement in MyJio, then use Home → Settings → Applications → Downloaded Apps, select the app, clear cache, and clear data only if you are ready to sign in again. Relaunch, then restart both the Jio Home Gateway and Set-top Box.
Special cases: live sports and post-ad freezing
Live streams can expose instability that on-demand video does not. Test a normal show, choose Auto or lower quality, and compare another network; a successful speed test alone does not prove that a live stream is healthy. If a program freezes immediately after an advertisement, restart the title, test another title or device, update or clear cache, and report the exact title and timestamp. This clue does not by itself prove an ad-server fault or a JioHotstar outage.
When the problem is probably platform- or title-side
After testing multiple supported devices and two independent networks, a failure limited to the same account and title makes a JioHotstar or content-delivery fault more plausible. Check the service’s current support notices rather than assuming that servers are overloaded. If every service fails, keep investigating the home network or ISP.

Do you need to buy anything?
Not usually. Consider Ethernet or a mesh system only when the issue follows a weak room-specific Wi-Fi signal. Consider a faster Jio plan only when measured capacity is consistently inadequate for the household’s simultaneous demand across services. A device replacement is reasonable when the TV is outside the compatibility list, cannot update, or lacks required DRM/HDCP support. A subscription upgrade addresses access or entitlement, not poor Wi-Fi. Avoid VPNs, unofficial APKs, “buffering boosters” and random DNS changes as default remedies. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2 Mbps enough for JioHotstar?
Jio’s legacy FAQ gives 2 Mbps as minimum guidance for basic playback. It is not a guarantee for uninterrupted HD, 4K or live sports.
Will clearing cache log me out?
Clearing cache normally preserves the session. Clearing app data or reinstalling can require you to sign in again, especially on a Jio Set-top Box.
Can I watch JioHotstar in a mobile browser?
The current India terms say mobile-browser streaming is not supported and may prompt you to install the mobile app.

Do I need a faster Jio plan to stop buffering?
Only if measured capacity remains inadequate across services and devices. Weak Wi-Fi, device software, app state or a title-specific fault will not be fixed by a faster plan.
Does JioCinema still exist under that name?
In India, JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar were brought together as JioHotstar in February 2025. Search results and older help pages may still use the JioCinema name.
