Seraphim Falls was filmed primarily in New Mexico, with its major river and waterfall sequences shot in Oregon. Although the 2006 western is set in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains in 1868, the production did not principally film in Nevada.
The main filming locations
New Mexico was the principal production region for Seraphim Falls. Director David Von Ancken said the crew filmed “all over the state of New Mexico,” with contemporaneous coverage identifying the Taos area in particular.
The production also traveled to Oregon for the film’s opening water material. Those locations included the McKenzie River, Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls.

Was Seraphim Falls filmed in Nevada?
Not primarily. Nevada’s Ruby Mountains are the film’s fictional story setting, but the evidence for the production’s principal locations points to New Mexico and Oregon. The movie uses those regions to stand in for the Nevada landscape of the story.

That distinction matters because the film’s geography changes dramatically. Its characters move through snow-covered mountains, high-altitude terrain, desert country and dangerous waterways, but those environments were assembled from more than one production region.
Where were the waterfall scenes filmed?
The waterfall and river scenes were filmed in Oregon around the McKenzie River, especially at Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls. The Oregon Film Office lists the McKenzie River and Sahalie Falls among the film’s locations, while production coverage also identifies Koosah Falls.
Sahalie Falls was chosen for practical as well as visual reasons. The production needed access near both the top and bottom of the falls, access on both sides of the McKenzie River, a reasonable chance of snow and nearby road access. The resulting sequence involved rapids and waterfalls and was described as a particularly perilous part of the shoot.

New Mexico’s demanding mountain locations
New Mexico supplied much of the film’s rugged mountain and desert scenery. One mountain location outside Taos stood at nearly 12,000 feet. Reaching it required a ski lift, snowmobiles, another ski lift and a hike for the cast and crew.
The difficult access matched the film’s physical approach. Von Ancken described a 47-day shoot, with 46 days spent entirely outdoors. The production faced cold mountain conditions, desert heat, rain and snow.
“Those mountains are still going to be standing there when we fade away, and you feel that texture in being there.”

The landscape therefore functions as more than scenery. Snow, altitude, heat and water continually impose physical limits on the characters, turning the environment into part of the conflict between pursuit, revenge and survival.

Seraphim Falls is built around sparse dialogue and sustained physical action. Von Ancken described the approach as “an experiment in behavioral storytelling.” In that structure, the characters’ movement through the landscape communicates as much as spoken explanation.
The progression from snowy mountains to desert terrain and finally to the river and waterfall material gives the pursuit a changing emotional and physical texture. The locations make exhaustion visible: the characters must cross snow, climb steep ground, endure exposure and negotiate dangerous water rather than simply discuss their past.

Von Ancken recalled writing images such as “a waterfall or a box canyon or a desert” and then having to find those places in reality. That helps explain why the film’s settings feel unusually specific. They were not designed as interchangeable western backdrops; the production sought terrain that could shape the action.

Production records place filming beginning on October 17, 2005, with additional January 2006 dates recorded in location databases. Von Ancken described the principal shoot as lasting 47 days.
The schedule and conditions made the locations especially demanding. Almost the entire shoot took place outdoors, across environments ranging from high, snowy mountains to hot desert terrain and fast-moving water.

Can you visit the filming locations?
The Oregon locations are identifiable public natural landmarks: the McKenzie River, Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls. Visitors should check current guidance from the relevant land managers before traveling, since access, trails, weather and safety conditions can change. The waterfall material was filmed around hazardous water, so viewing a location is not the same as safely entering the areas used by a film crew.
New Mexico’s filming was spread across the state rather than concentrated at one single attraction. The Taos-area landscapes are the most clearly identified part of the New Mexico production, but there is no complete official scene-by-scene public map confirming every location used in the movie.
