March 10, 2024, was also the first day of daylight saving time in the United States. That is why the correct labels are EDT and PDT, not EST and PST. The full date matters: the clocks moved forward that morning.
Why did some guides say the Oscars began at 1 p.m.?
They were referring to different pre-ceremony programs. ABC News’ “Countdown to Oscars: On the Red Carpet Live!” began at 1 p.m. EDT and streamed on ABC News Live. Red-carpet arrivals began at approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT. The official ABC program, “The Oscars Red Carpet Show,” aired from 6:30 to 7 p.m. EDT, immediately before the ceremony.

What channel aired the 2024 Oscars in the United States?
The ceremony aired live on ABC. Viewers needed their local ABC affiliate, not one universal nationwide channel number. The number varied by city, cable or satellite provider and television package.
- Antenna: Tune to the local ABC station over the air. This was the simplest free legal option for households that could receive a usable local signal.
- Cable or satellite: Select ABC in the provider’s channel lineup.
- Live-TV streaming service: Use a service that carried the viewer’s local ABC affiliate in that market.
For antenna viewing, viewers could rescan the television if necessary, confirm that the local ABC station appeared in the channel list and tune in before the 6:30 p.m. EDT red-carpet show—or before 7 p.m. EDT for the ceremony itself.
A free over-the-air broadcast still required both an antenna and adequate reception. It did not mean that every household could receive ABC without equipment or that an internet stream was free.

Option 1: ABC.com or the ABC app

The 2024 ABC information listed support for computers, iOS and Android devices, Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. The direct stream was not a universal free stream: market eligibility and provider authentication applied.
Current-status note: ABC announced that its standalone ABC app was discontinued on September 23, 2024. Prices, free trials, channel packages and eligibility are volatile. Do not assume that a trial advertised for the 2024 ceremony—or a plan available in one city—still applies today.
Hulu versus Hulu + Live TV: the distinction that matters
Hulu is not the same as Hulu + Live TV.
- Hulu + Live TV: Could provide the live ABC broadcast in eligible markets in 2024.
- Ordinary Hulu: Did not stream the 2024 Oscars live.
- 2025 change: The 97th Oscars became the first Academy Awards ceremony to stream live on standard Hulu.
That distinction explains why a viewer with a regular Hulu subscription could search for the Oscars and find no live event. The first standard-Hulu live stream was announced for the 2025 ceremony by ABC News and described in Disney’s announcement. A 2024 article that simply said “watch the Oscars on Hulu” was incomplete unless it specifically meant Hulu + Live TV.

How viewers outside the United States could watch
The 96th Oscars were broadcast in more than 200 territories, but international rights were different in each country. U.S. ABC streams and U.S. live-TV services were not a reliable international solution and could be region-restricted.
The best starting point was the Academy’s official international listings. Select the country or territory, identify the listed broadcaster or platform, then confirm the local schedule, time zone, registration requirements and replay policy on that broadcaster’s own website.
Verified 2024 examples
- Canada: CTV carried the ceremony. Bell Media published its 2024 CTV Oscars coverage details.
- United Kingdom: ITV1 and ITVX were the exclusive U.K. home of the 96th Oscars. STV and STV Player also carried ITV content in Scotland, according to ITV’s announcement.
- Australia: Channel Seven and 7plus carried the ceremony, as reported by ABC News Australia.
For every other territory, use the Academy’s country-by-country list rather than assuming that the U.S. start time, ABC stream or American subscription services will work. Convert the U.S. time only as a cross-check; the local rights-holder’s schedule is the operational source of truth.

Was there an accessibility stream?
Yes. The Academy provided an official American Sign Language livestream with Deaf interpreters on its YouTube channel. The 96th Oscars ASL livestream was a companion interpretation feed intended to be used alongside the main broadcast, not necessarily a replacement for the ABC telecast.
Viewers could open the official Oscars YouTube stream and start it alongside the main broadcast at the ceremony’s published start time. The Academy also provides broader information on its accessibility efforts.

A practical backup plan
Live award shows are particularly vulnerable to login problems, local-channel restrictions and overloaded streams. A reliable setup for the original broadcast would have been:
