It works for pens, craft supplies, charging cables, small toys, collectibles and other lightweight items. It is less convincing as a serious popcorn vessel, and it should not be treated as a sex toy, pet bowl, planter without an insert, or general-purpose food container.
The “one thing” headline is an editorial judgment, not a manufacturer specification. The bucket was designed and sold as a collectible popcorn container. Its viral adult-product comparison explains why it became famous, but does not establish that it was made, tested or certified for intimate use.
The verdict: use it for dry storage or leave it on a shelf
If you still own one—or are considering buying one on the secondary market—the most sensible use is a lightweight, dry novelty organizer. Put it on a desk, shelf or home-theater console and use it for objects that do not require special hygiene, airtight storage or protection from moisture.
- Pens, pencils and markers
- Paperclips, binder clips and other desk supplies
- Craft materials and game pieces
- Charging cables and small remotes, if they fit
- Small toys, figurines or collectibles
- Movie tickets, pins and other Dune memorabilia
That use fits the bucket’s basic strengths: it already holds loose objects, its unusual shape is more decorative than efficient, and keeping the contents dry avoids most unanswered questions about leaks, corrosion, food residue and long-term cleanability.

For many owners, the best “second use” may simply be display. The bucket became valuable because it was memorable and culturally notorious, not because it was a particularly efficient container. Industry coverage of its design describes it as a collectible intended to create a memorable tactile experience for fans. Zinc’s design interview with Boxoffice Pro also discusses the product’s collectible appeal and the “nag factor” built into a distinctive licensed item.
What the Dune sandworm bucket actually was
The item was AMC’s limited-edition Dune: Part Two collectible, released around the film’s theatrical opening in the United States. AMC promoted availability at participating theaters beginning February 29, 2024, while some locations reportedly sold it earlier. Dune: Part Two opened widely in North America on March 1, 2024, according to AMC’s film listing.
Contemporary reporting describes the main container as a tin or metal popcorn bucket with a removable sandworm-shaped lid. The lid has a circular opening surrounded by flexible teeth or bristles. Instead of reaching into an ordinary open tub, the customer reaches through the sandworm’s mouth to retrieve the popcorn—an obvious visual reference to the Shai-Hulud sandworms in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe.
The body and the teeth should not be confused. The main container was described as metal or tin, while the flexible tooth material was reported as silicone. Zinc representatives said silicone was chosen instead of rigid plastic so the teeth would be less likely to scratch users. That does not mean that the whole object is silicone, body-safe, dishwasher-safe or suitable for any use beyond its intended concession-product role. The reported original AMC price was $24.99, with popcorn included—not the often-repeated $10 to $15 figure. Forbes and The Washington Post both reported the $24.99 launch price.
Why the bucket became an internet event
Images of the bucket circulated online in January 2024, well before the film’s release. The combination of a mouth-like opening, flexible teeth and the need to reach a hand through it prompted widespread comparisons to an adult sex toy. The joke moved through X, TikTok, Reddit, entertainment sites and late-night discussion.
The sexual association was central to the bucket’s cultural history, but it was a reaction to the design—not evidence of the design’s intended purpose. Zinc’s representatives said the designers did not initially anticipate that comparison. The product was reviewed by AMC and Legendary before production, and it was marketed as a popcorn collectible. The joke was no longer confined to social media when Saturday Night Live built a musical sketch around it. The February 3, 2024 episode included an officially titled segment, “Dune Popcorn Bucket”. Reactions from the film’s cast and director Denis Villeneuve also became part of the wider entertainment coverage. The important distinction remains simple: the bucket’s intended function was holding popcorn; the internet supplied the alternate interpretation.

Is it actually bad for popcorn?
Not exactly. The bucket does hold popcorn. The stronger criticism is that it is awkward compared with a normal open tub.
Esquire’s hands-on test found that the opening worked, but the tooth-lined design slowed access. Reaching down through the narrow mouth could leave the user’s hand and forearm greasy, particularly when the popcorn was heavily buttered or seasoned. The experience could also be inconvenient for anyone wearing long sleeves.

1. Desk storage: the most defensible repurposing idea
A dry organizer is the clear winner because it does not ask the bucket to do anything technically demanding. You are not relying on it to hold liquid, seal food, withstand a dishwasher, support a plant or contact the body. You are simply using an existing container for small, lightweight objects.

The opening may still be inconvenient for larger items, and the flexible teeth can catch on objects as they go in or out. That is a minor annoyance for pens or craft supplies, but it is another reason not to overload the bucket or use it for heavy tools.
2. Display: arguably better than utility
The sandworm lid is the reason most people wanted the item in the first place. Keeping it complete, clean and undamaged may make more sense than turning it into a heavily used household container. A desk, media console, shelf or display cabinet gives the bucket a purpose without exposing it to water, heat, stains or permanent alterations.
If collector value matters, keep the lid with the body, avoid drilling holes or gluing it to a surface, and protect the printed finish from direct sunlight and high heat. Scratches, stains, missing parts and modifications can make it less appealing to a future collector.
3. Dry candy or snacks: possible, but not proven
The object was sold as a popcorn container, so using it for a sealed bag of candy or another dry snack is more plausible than using it for liquids or hot food. Still, no publicly accessible manufacturer care sheet was found confirming dishwasher safety, long-term food-contact safety, airtightness or the behavior of the flexible teeth after repeated cleaning.

If you use it for snacks, keep the food in its original sealed packaging or in a removable liner. Do not use it for hot food, oily sauces, liquids or anything that requires an airtight seal.
4. Vase or planter: use it as an outer sleeve
Do not put water or soil directly into the bucket unless you have personally verified that the specific item is watertight and resistant to corrosion. The safer arrangement is straightforward:
- Clean and dry the bucket.
- Place a separate waterproof cup, jar or nursery pot inside it.
- Use the Dune bucket as a decorative outer sleeve.
- Keep the arrangement on a water-resistant surface and check for condensation or leaks.
This is a practical inference, not an officially approved use. A collector who wants to preserve condition should avoid wet soil, drilling drainage holes and other permanent modifications.
5. Pet bowl and bathroom storage: poor trade-offs
The sandworm opening makes the bucket a poor permanent pet bowl. The lid’s flexible teeth and recesses are harder to clean than a conventional bowl, and no animal-safety specifications were located. Removing the lid does not solve every problem: the remaining container may still be awkward, and its finish and construction are undocumented for repeated animal-food or water use.

It is similarly unsuitable for loose storage of toothbrushes, retainers, cosmetics or other hygiene-sensitive items. Food residue can remain in seams and bristle-like recesses. If someone wants the bucket in a bathroom, a separate sealed case inside it is safer and easier to clean than placing hygiene items directly in the container.
Why it should not be treated as a sex toy
The internet’s joke is part of the story, but the bucket is not a purpose-built sex toy. No public documentation establishes that its materials, seams, flexible teeth or cleanability were tested for intimate contact. That is different from claiming that the object is toxic or that every conceivable contact would cause harm; it means there is no sound basis for recommending that use.
Sexual-health guidance favors products made specifically for sexual use, with known body-safe, nonporous materials and surfaces that can be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Improvised objects can be risky when they are rough, breakable, detachable or difficult to clean. Planned Parenthood’s safer-sex guidance discusses those concerns, while Cleveland Clinic’s guidance emphasizes using appropriate products and safer practices.
“It was sold for food” is not the same as “it is certified for intimate use.” “Plastic” is not a complete material specification, and the reported silicone-like teeth do not certify the entire object. The responsible answer to the viral question is therefore not a set of improvised-use instructions; it is simply: choose a product designed and labeled for that purpose instead.

How to clean it before repurposing
No authoritative product-care sheet was located in the reviewed sources, so the following is a conservative cleaning procedure—not official manufacturer instructions and not a guarantee of food or body-contact safety.
- Remove loose debris. Empty all popcorn, seasoning and crumbs from the body, lid and tooth-lined opening.
- Separate the parts. Detach the sandworm lid if the design allows it.
- Wipe the metal body. Use lukewarm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth.
- Clean the teeth gently. Use a soft cloth or soft brush around the flexible teeth and their recesses. Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive scraping.
- Remove soap residue. Wipe or rinse carefully without assuming that the entire item should be submerged.
- Dry every recess. Leave the parts fully dry before putting anything inside them.
- Inspect the object. Check the teeth, lid, seams and printed finish for cracks, looseness, corrosion or damage.
- Use an insert for wet items. For a plant or vase, use a separate waterproof container inside the bucket.
Cleaning can remove old popcorn residue; it cannot create a missing safety certification. In particular, cleaning the bucket does not make it suitable for intimate use, guarantee long-term food safety or prove that it is dishwasher-safe.
Buying one in 2026: treat it as a collectible, not a normal concession item
As of August 10, 2026, the original AMC sandworm bucket is no longer a normal current concession item in the sources reviewed. Buyers generally encounter it through secondary-market listings. Also check which version you are buying: the AMC United States item is not necessarily identical to every international or Canadian Dune-themed popcorn container listed online.
Individual eBay results illustrate why a single asking price should not be treated as the item’s value. One completed June 2026 sale was reported at $50, while an April 2026 ended listing was reported at $87.49. Before buying, confirm the seller’s photographs show the detachable lid, the flexible teeth and the main body together. Ask about stains, odors, corrosion, missing pieces and whether the item is an AMC United States version rather than a different regional release. If you want a display collectible, completeness and condition matter more than an unsupported claim about a general resale range.

The bucket’s fame generated plenty of quick explainers, but not all product specifications repeated online are verified. The most commonly circulated unsupported claims include:
- an exact height of 8 to 10 inches;
- an exact width of 6 to 7 inches;
- a capacity of 85 to 100 ounces;
- “food-safe plastic” as the construction of the entire product;
- dishwasher or microwave safety;
- watertightness or airtightness;
- official cleaning instructions;
- body-safe or intimate-use certification; and
- a general resale value of $20 to $50.
Those figures appear in the GeekChamp article that inspired the headline, but its dimensions, capacity and material description are not supported by a manufacturer specification sheet in the available record. Its reported $10-to-$15 original price also conflicts with contemporary reporting of AMC’s $24.99 price with popcorn. The article is useful as evidence of the “one thing, not popcorn” framing, but its product details should not be repeated as established facts. Read the original GeekChamp claim here.
Other coverage has different limitations. Esquire offers the strongest practical evidence about eating from the bucket, but it is a short hands-on test rather than a long-term care or materials study. The Ringer’s list of alternative uses—including vase, candy bowl and cat bowl ideas—is deliberately comedic, so it is better evidence of the cultural conversation than a safety guide. The Ringer’s humorous list should be read in that spirit.

A simple decision rule for owners
Before giving the bucket a new job, ask six questions:
- Does the use require the object to hold water or another liquid?
- Does it involve food beyond the original popcorn use?
- Does it involve bodily contact or hygiene-sensitive items?
- Will the contents be heavy enough to stress the base, lid or teeth?
- Can every part be cleaned and dried without damaging the finish?
- Will the use scratch, stain, drill, cut, glue or otherwise reduce collectible condition?
If the answer is “no” to the first three questions and the contents are light, dry and removable, the use is probably within the bucket’s most reasonable repurposing category. That is why a desk organizer or display piece beats every more elaborate idea.
The final answer to the headline
The Dune sandworm popcorn bucket is not useless for popcorn; it is simply awkward at the job it was sold to perform. It holds popcorn, but its narrow tooth-lined opening slows access and can make the eating experience greasy and inconvenient.
Its best legitimate second life is less sensational: use it as a weird, memorable container for small dry things, or keep it intact as a collectible.
