LiveLeak is no longer operating. The controversial video-sharing site closed on May 5, 2021, after roughly 15 years online. Its founder, Hayden Hewitt, said the team believed the project had achieved what it could and wanted to pursue a new direction. The closure was not announced as the result of a government ban, court order, or platform takedown.
When did LiveLeak shut down?
LiveLeak ceased operations on May 5, 2021. According to ArchiveTeam’s record, the closure was sudden and had not been announced in advance. The former homepage redirected visitors to ItemFix, a newer project associated with Hewitt’s team.
LiveLeak had launched in 2006 and operated for approximately 15 years. It became known for hosting user-uploaded footage that mainstream platforms often removed or avoided, including disturbing news, conflict, accident, and violent material. That reputation made it a frequent subject of debate about graphic imagery, moderation, news value, and the responsibilities of open video platforms.

Why did LiveLeak close?
Hewitt’s farewell message said the team felt LiveLeak had “achieved all that it could” and wanted to try something “new and exciting.” He presented the decision as a choice to chart a new path rather than as a forced shutdown.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Hewitt also indicated that the practical pressures of keeping the service online, including hosting costs, were part of the reason for moving on. However, the available statements do not identify one formal cause such as a legal order, government ban, or action by a larger platform.
That distinction matters because LiveLeak’s closure is often described online as a censorship-driven shutdown. The operators’ own announcement does not support that simplified explanation. It points instead to the end of the project’s life, the desire for a different direction, and the operational burden of continuing it.
Was LiveLeak replaced by ItemFix?
ItemFix followed LiveLeak and remains accessible, but it is not simply LiveLeak under a new name. Hewitt described ItemFix as “completely different” and explicitly said it was not a replacement for LiveLeak.

ItemFix’s current interface includes sections and tools such as Latest, Popular channels, Viral, Memes, News, Fail, WTF, Crashes, and Cool. It also lists a Video to GIF Tool, an Image Meme Generator, and Text to Speech. The site can be accessed at ItemFix.
Its stated operating model is also more restrictive than LiveLeak’s former reputation suggested. Contemporary coverage reported that ItemFix prohibited uploads containing excessive gore or violence. This means visitors should not assume that old LiveLeak material, policies, accounts, comments, or links were transferred to the newer service.
Did LiveLeak’s videos migrate to ItemFix?
There is no verified announcement that LiveLeak’s complete video catalog, user accounts, comments, or URLs were migrated to ItemFix. The farewell message announces the new project but does not promise a full catalog transfer.

ArchiveTeam lists LiveLeak’s preservation status as Partially saved. Its archival project, identified as liveleak-grab, does not represent a complete, unrestricted copy of everything that appeared on the site; some archived data access is restricted. As a result, many individual videos and pages may be difficult or impossible to recover.
Did LiveLeak allow everything?
No. Although LiveLeak was widely associated with permissive moderation, it did have limits. In August 2014, the site announced that it would not host future Islamic State beheading videos. In March 2019, it declined to host the Christchurch shooting video.
Those decisions do not erase LiveLeak’s controversial identity, but they show why the phrase “LiveLeak allowed everything” is inaccurate. The site made content-policy decisions, including decisions about whether extremely violent material served a legitimate documentary or news purpose.

What is LiveLeak’s status today?
LiveLeak is defunct, and ArchiveTeam lists its URL status as Offline. ItemFix remains the accessible site associated with the former operators, but it should be treated as a separate and more restricted platform rather than as a live archive of LiveLeak.
For researchers, documentary makers, and journalists, the most reliable conclusion is therefore limited: LiveLeak operated from 2006 until May 5, 2021; it closed after its operators chose a new direction amid the broader pressures of running the service; ItemFix followed as a different project; and only part of LiveLeak’s historical material appears to have been preserved.
Why the distinction matters for documentary research
LiveLeak’s old links are frequently cited as if they still lead to a stable source. They do not. A reference to a former LiveLeak URL may now be offline, redirected, or available only through incomplete archival captures. Researchers should verify the date, uploader, context, and provenance of any surviving copy rather than assuming that an ItemFix page is the original LiveLeak record.

The site’s history also illustrates a recurring problem with online documentary evidence: a platform can become culturally important without becoming permanently accessible. When a service disappears, its videos may survive in news reports, mirrors, personal archives, or web archives—but those copies can lose metadata, original context, moderation history, and chain-of-custody information.
LiveLeak’s shutdown is best understood not as a single dramatic takedown, but as the end of a distinctive platform whose operators decided to move on. Its successor still exists, but the original service, its community, and much of its catalog should not be assumed to have survived intact.
