Short answer: no genuinely free U.S. streaming option is currently verified. The Shawshank Redemption is listed through Philo and AMC-related services, while digital rentals and purchases are also available. However, “free” should not be used for a subscription, channel package, free trial, or a title page that cannot currently play the film.
This availability snapshot is for the United States. Listings and prices can change without notice.
Availability and prices were checked for the U.S. on August 18, 2026. JustWatch’s cited availability check was dated August 1, 2026, so viewers should confirm the listing immediately before watching.
Is The Shawshank Redemption free to stream?
Not according to the latest verified listing. JustWatch reported no free streaming option at the time of its U.S. check. The film is listed with subscription services, including Philo and AMC-related options, but those require a paid plan or an existing television-provider package.

Subscription streaming: Philo, AMC and AMC+
Philo is the clearest subscription option surfaced by current availability listings. That does not make the movie free: access requires the service’s paid plan, even if a qualifying viewer may be offered a temporary trial.
AMC also maintains an official page for the film. An AMC title page does not automatically mean unrestricted playback for every visitor. Depending on the access route, the movie may require an AMC+ subscription, a compatible channel package, or authentication through a television provider. The film is also listed through distribution routes such as AMC+ Amazon Channel and AMC+ Roku Premium Channel.
See the official AMC movie page, but check what login or subscription it requests before treating it as a viewing option.

If you already pay for a compatible service
Check Philo, AMC, AMC+, or a live-TV package you already have. If the film is included in your existing plan, there is no additional rental charge. The service itself is still paid access.
If you want one viewing
A rental is usually more economical than starting a full streaming subscription for a single 143-minute film. The latest surfaced listings showed prices of approximately $3.99 through Spectrum On Demand and $5.99 through several digital storefronts, including Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home. Prices may vary by platform, device, resolution, promotion, and location.

If you expect to watch it repeatedly
Digital purchase listings were approximately $14.99 through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home. A purchase may make sense for repeat viewers, although it is generally a license within the retailer’s digital ecosystem rather than ownership of a physical copy.

Why “free on Tubi” is misleading
A search result or an old article may point to Tubi because the service still has a page for the movie. But a title page can remain online after licensing expires. Tubi’s current page marks The Shawshank Redemption as “content unavailable,” so it should not be presented as the film’s current free streaming home.
The same caution applies to free trials. A trial can temporarily provide access to a paid service for an eligible customer, but it is not the same as a permanent free, ad-supported stream. Cancellation deadlines and eligibility rules also apply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it on Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+ or Prime Video?
The latest surfaced availability tracker does not list the film in the standard catalogs of Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, or Prime Video. That does not mean Amazon has no way to show the movie: Amazon may offer it as a rental, a purchase, or through an AMC+ channel subscription.
Best Value
“Available on Amazon” therefore does not necessarily mean “included with Prime.” Always distinguish between Prime catalog access, a digital storefront rental or purchase, and a paid channel add-on.
What happened to “31 years later”?
The Shawshank Redemption was released in 1994. Thirty-one years later was 2025; in 2026, it is 32 years removed from its release. The “31 years later” wording therefore belongs to a 2025 headline or anniversary framing, not a current 2026 update.
The film runs for approximately 142–143 minutes, was directed by Frank Darabont, and stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Apple’s official listing identifies it as a 1994 release, while JustWatch lists it as rated R in the United States. See the Apple TV listing for credits and runtime information.
Is it really “the greatest movie of all time”?
That is a judgment, not an objective availability fact. The film’s enduring audience reputation, acclaimed performances, and themes of hope, friendship, institutional abuse, and freedom explain why it is often described in superlative terms. But a current streaming listing cannot prove that it is literally the greatest movie ever made.

Bottom line for U.S. viewers
- Already have Philo, AMC, AMC+, or a compatible live-TV package? Check there first.
- Want one viewing? Compare current rental prices before signing up for a full subscription.
- Want repeat access? Consider a digital purchase or physical disc.
- Looking for a genuinely free stream? None is currently verified, and Tubi’s page says the title is unavailable.
- Using Amazon? Confirm whether the listing is a rental, purchase, Prime inclusion, or AMC+ channel access.
Streaming rights are country-specific and volatile. The options above apply to the United States and may change after publication.
