No single free service replaces Netflix completely. Netflix combines originals, ad-free viewing, downloads, profiles, and a polished on-demand catalog in a way free platforms generally do not. For most U.S. viewers, Tubi is the closest all-purpose alternative; Pluto TV is better for live channel surfing, while The Roku Channel offers a strong mixture of live and on-demand programming. If you have access to a participating library or university, Kanopy and Hoopla can be the most valuable options for documentaries, independent films, and classic cinema.
The practical replacement is therefore a small, legal collection of services rather than one free Netflix clone: use Tubi for on-demand viewing, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel for live channels, and check your library for ad-free or library-lending access.
The quick answer
- Closest to Netflix: Tubi
- Best for live TV: Pluto TV
- Best mixture of live and on-demand viewing: The Roku Channel
- Best for independent films, documentaries, and classics: Kanopy, if your library or university participates
- Best library-card service with movies, TV, ebooks, audiobooks, and comics: Hoopla
- Best for personal media plus free streaming: Plex
- Best for Samsung owners: Samsung TV Plus
- Best for Amazon households: Free programming inside Prime Video, not a separate Freevee service
This guide is focused on viewers in the United States. Catalogs, apps, account requirements, device support, and library eligibility can differ by country, region, device model, and licensing agreement.

Free streaming services fall into several different categories. Treating them as interchangeable creates most of the confusion around Netflix alternatives.
Popular on Amazon
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Free with advertising
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, and eligible free programming in Prime Video are generally funded by advertising. You do not pay a recurring subscription, but you will see commercials and the catalog will change as licensing agreements change.
Tubi describes its service as free, legal, and ad-supported, without requiring a subscription or credit card to watch. “Free” does not necessarily mean ad-free, downloadable, available in every country, or usable without an account on every device.
Free through a library or university
Kanopy and Hoopla work more like digital lending services. You normally need a participating public library card or university login. Borrowing limits, available titles, and authentication rules are set by the institution, so having a library card does not automatically guarantee access to either service.

They usually do not provide an unlimited, Netflix-sized binge catalog.
Official free video platforms
YouTube also has free movies, television, documentaries, and creator programming through official channels. Search results can mix licensed material with unauthorized uploads, so use verified channels and official listings rather than assuming every “free movie” result is legitimate.
Free trials are different
A free trial is temporary promotional access, not a permanently free Netflix alternative. Trials may require payment details and can convert to a paid subscription if you do not cancel in time.
Best free Netflix alternatives ranked
1. Tubi: the closest general Netflix substitute
Best for: Viewers who want to choose a movie or television episode on demand.
Recommended Free Tools
Tubi is the strongest general-purpose starting point because it combines a large, recognizable on-demand catalog with broad device support and no recurring subscription. It is closer to the basic Netflix interaction than a service built primarily around live channels: search for a title, select it, and start watching.
Tubi includes movies and television across mainstream, classic, family, documentary, anime, horror, and other genre categories. The exact catalog rotates, so a title found in an old search result may no longer be available. Search Tubi directly before planning a viewing night.
It is ad-supported, and most users should not expect Netflix-style offline downloads. An account can provide watchlists and continued viewing across devices, but account requirements may differ by device and feature. Tubi lists support for the web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, and other platforms, although model and operating-system restrictions apply. Its device guidance recommends keeping both the app and device software current.
Verdict: Install Tubi first if you want one free app that feels most like a conventional streaming library.
2. The Roku Channel: a strong live-and-on-demand companion
Best for: Viewers who want free movies, television, live channels, and Roku Originals in one service.
The Roku Channel is not limited to Roku televisions and players. Roku’s corporate filing describes availability beyond Roku hardware, including the web and selected third-party devices. Availability still depends on location and platform.
Also popular on Amazon
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.
The service combines on-demand programming with free live channels. That makes it useful both for someone browsing a catalog and for someone who wants to turn on a channel without choosing a specific title. Its main limitation is that catalog depth, account requirements, and features can vary by device and region. Advertising supports the free offering, and Netflix-style offline viewing should not be assumed.
Verdict: Add The Roku Channel to Tubi if you want a broad free mixture rather than a purely on-demand service.
3. Pluto TV: best for channel surfing
Best for: Viewers who miss cable-style browsing and scheduled channels.
Pluto TV’s main strength is its live-channel experience. You can browse a program guide and move among movie, television, news, entertainment, documentary, and genre channels without deciding on a specific title first. It also offers some on-demand programming.
The trade-off is control. A live channel may be showing a program you cannot start from the beginning, or a title may be available only at a scheduled time or through a separate on-demand listing. Commercial interruptions can also feel more prominent in a live format. Pluto is therefore not a weaker version of Tubi; it serves a different purpose.
Verdict: Choose Pluto TV when “What is on?” is more appealing than building a queue of specific films and series.
4. Kanopy: best for documentaries, independent films, and classics
Best for: Library or university users seeking independent, international, classic, and documentary films.
Kanopy can be the best free service for documentary-focused viewers, but eligibility is the crucial condition. Your public library or university must participate, and the number of monthly plays or available titles depends on that institution’s arrangement.
Unlike most advertising-funded services, library lending platforms typically do not interrupt films with commercial breaks. That does not mean unlimited viewing: borrowing limits and licensing restrictions still apply. Kanopy is also not designed to replace every mainstream series or provide a continuous live-TV feed.
Verdict: Check Kanopy before installing another ad-supported app. For the right library user, its film quality matters more than raw catalog size.

Best for: Viewers whose library offers digital borrowing across several media types.
Hoopla provides movies and television with a participating library card, alongside ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and music. Its catalog and monthly borrowing allowance are determined by your library, and the service may require a card number, PIN, or separate account.
Hoopla is particularly useful when you want more than streaming video. Its lending model can make individual films available without advertising, but the borrowing limit means it is not an unlimited replacement for Netflix. Some mobile borrowing or download features may vary by title and platform, so check the current listing rather than assuming every program can be saved offline.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Verdict: Hoopla is one of the best free additions for households with a participating library, especially if they also use digital books and audiobooks.

6. Plex: free streaming plus personal media
Best for: Viewers who want a supplementary free catalog or a way to organize their own legally obtained media.
Plex offers free ad-supported movies, television, and live channels. Its distinctive advantage is that Plex can also organize personal media stored on compatible devices. That personal-media functionality is separate from downloading a licensed streaming title for offline viewing.
Plex’s free catalog is useful, but it is generally less close to Netflix’s mainstream on-demand experience than Tubi. Account requirements and features differ depending on whether you are using Plex’s free streaming catalog or connecting to a personal media server.
Verdict: Use Plex as a useful supplement, not as the only replacement for Netflix.
7. Free content inside Prime Video: Freevee is no longer a separate service
Best for: Amazon households that want free ad-supported programming within an existing Prime Video interface.
Amazon deprecated Freevee as a separate service in early 2025 and moved its free, ad-supported programming into Prime Video. Amazon’s current FAST guidance explains the broader free, ad-supported arrangement. Non-Prime viewers can still access eligible free content with advertising, but the exact experience depends on the title, device, region, and Amazon account.
Do not search for a current standalone “Freevee app” as though it were an independent service. Look for clearly marked free programming and channels inside Prime Video instead. This option is convenient for Fire TV owners and Amazon users, but it is not a complete substitute for Netflix’s catalog.
Verdict: Useful if you already use Amazon devices or Prime Video; not a reason to buy an Amazon subscription simply to obtain free programming.

Best for: Viewers with a compatible Samsung smart television, phone, or tablet.
Samsung TV Plus is primarily a free, ad-supported channel service integrated into Samsung’s ecosystem. It can be convenient because it requires no additional streaming hardware on supported devices. Its live-channel orientation makes it more comparable to free cable replacement services than to Netflix’s on-demand browsing.
Availability depends heavily on the Samsung device, country, and software version. It is less compelling if you do not own Samsung hardware or if you mainly want to search for a particular movie.
Verdict: A convenient built-in option, particularly for channel surfing, but not the most direct Netflix replacement.

9. Xumo Play: another live-TV alternative
Best for: Viewers who want free live channels with some on-demand content.
Xumo Play offers a FAST-style experience built around channels, scheduled programming, and a selection of on-demand titles. It can fill the same role as Pluto TV or Samsung TV Plus, especially on compatible televisions and streaming devices.
Its main limitation is depth: viewers looking for a large, searchable library of complete seasons may find it less Netflix-like than Tubi. Account and device requirements vary, so confirm availability in the relevant app store.
Verdict: Worth adding if your television already supports it, particularly when live programming is your priority.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →10. YouTube’s official free programming
Best for: Documentaries, creator-led educational content, niche interests, and official free films.
YouTube is not a unified Netflix-style catalog. Its strength is variety: documentaries from official organizations, public broadcasters, filmmakers, museums, educational channels, and verified distributors can sit alongside free movies and television listings.
The experience depends on the publisher. Some videos are full-length productions, while others are clips, compilations, or excerpts. Use official channels and avoid suspicious uploads, fake download buttons, and sites that redirect you away from YouTube.
Verdict: An excellent documentary supplement, but too inconsistent to serve as a single Netflix replacement.

For movies
- Broad mainstream selection: Tubi
- Live movie channels: Pluto TV
- Independent, international, classic, and documentary films: Kanopy
- Library-based variety: Hoopla
- Supplementary streaming and personal-media organization: Plex
Do not rely on permanent title lists. Free movie rights change frequently, and a search engine result may describe a title that has already left the service or is available only in another country.
For television series
Tubi and The Roku Channel are the strongest general starting points for on-demand television. Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, and Xumo Play are better when you enjoy scheduled channels. Library services can provide excellent individual programs, but borrowing limits make them less suitable for unlimited binge viewing.
For live channels
Start with Pluto TV. The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, and Xumo Play are useful alternatives. Amazon also offers free channels and programming through its Prime Video ecosystem. These services imitate cable more than Netflix: you may select a channel rather than a specific episode, and local-channel availability should not be assumed.
For documentaries and independent cinema
Check Kanopy first, then Hoopla, followed by official YouTube channels and the documentary categories on Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Plex. Library services are often the most distinctive option because their value is based on curated film and educational collections rather than only mainstream commercial titles.
For classic television
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and library services can all be useful. The best choice depends on whether you want to select a particular episode or watch a scheduled classic-TV channel.

For children’s programming
Free services carry children’s programming, but parents should inspect profile, parental-control, advertising, and content-filter options on the specific service and device. Do not assume that every platform applies identical restrictions or advertising policies to children’s viewing.
For anime and genre programming
Tubi is the most practical first check among the general services, with Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, and official YouTube channels providing additional possibilities. Catalogs and language options change, so search the service directly before promising a particular series.
For ad-free viewing
Kanopy and Hoopla may offer the best experience for eligible library users because their lending model generally avoids commercial interruptions. Most permanently free commercial services are ad-supported. Ad frequency can differ between live channels, on-demand titles, devices, regions, and individual sessions, so avoid treating a single viewing experience as a universal measurement.

How to build a free streaming setup
- Install Tubi. Use it as the main on-demand catalog.
- Add Pluto TV or The Roku Channel. Pick Pluto for channel surfing or The Roku Channel for a broader mixture.
- Check your library’s digital-resources page. Search specifically for Kanopy and Hoopla rather than assuming your card provides both.
- Add Plex or YouTube for gaps. Use Plex for supplementary streaming and personal-media organization; use official YouTube channels for documentary and niche programming.
- Use watchlists where available. An account may improve continuity and recommendations, but it is not always required to begin watching.
- Search each service directly. Catalogs rotate, and a title listed by a search engine may no longer be available.
The main cost of canceling Netflix is often inconvenience rather than money: you may need several apps, separate watchlists, and different search habits.
Accounts, cards, and device requirements
“Free” and “no account required” are not the same thing.
- Tubi: Registration can enable synchronized lists and continued viewing. Some devices may require a device-store account or even payment-card verification to download an app, without Tubi itself charging a subscription. See Tubi’s installation guidance.
- Kanopy and Hoopla: Library or university authentication is essential, and the institution must participate.
- Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, smart TVs, and game consoles: The device may require its own account, app-store login, or current operating system.
- Web viewing: Often avoids installing a television app, but browser support and casting features vary.
Before buying new hardware, check the existing television’s app store, update its operating system, and try the service’s web version. If an app is unavailable, casting from a phone or tablet—or adding a compatible Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or other streaming device—may solve the problem. Hardware is optional, and its purchase cost should not be confused with the streaming service’s zero subscription price.
Offline viewing, picture quality, and Netflix features you may lose
Most major ad-supported free services do not provide Netflix-style offline downloads. Library services may have mobile borrowing or download rules for particular titles, but those files can expire or be restricted by licensing. Plex’s personal-media features are not the same as downloading a licensed streaming title.
Free services may also be less consistent in 4K, HDR, surround sound, profiles, playback continuity, accessibility controls, and parental settings. Netflix’s paid service remains stronger for original programming, a unified recommendation system, ad-free playback, household profiles, and predictable downloads.
Free alternatives work best as cost-saving replacements for specific viewing habits—not as technically identical copies of Netflix.
Are free Netflix alternatives legal and safe?
The services named here are official platforms that fund distribution through advertising, library lending, or platform economics. Safety depends on using the official service, app, or domain—not on every result returned by a search engine.
- Use official websites and recognized app stores.
- Avoid pop-up-heavy “free movie” sites and fake play or download buttons.
- Do not install unknown APK files or unofficial streaming-box software.
- Never enter payment or identity information into an unfamiliar streaming page.
- Do not treat a VPN as a substitute for licensing. Tubi says users do not need a VPN to use its service, and bypassing regional restrictions may violate a platform’s terms.
- Remember that an unauthorized upload on a video platform is not made legal merely because it is easy to watch.
What free services cannot replace
Free streaming is most successful when expectations are realistic. No single free service reliably provides all of the following:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Netflix exclusives and current Netflix originals
- A stable catalog that does not rotate
- Ad-free playback across mainstream content
- Offline downloads for most programs
- One unified search and recommendation system
- Consistent profiles and household controls across services
- Predictable 4K, HDR, and advanced audio support
You generally cannot watch Netflix originals legally for free on another service unless the rights holder separately licenses them to a free platform. A library service may offer acclaimed films and documentaries, but that does not make it a source of Netflix exclusives.
Bottom line: the best free Netflix replacement is a combination
Start with Tubi for Netflix-like on-demand browsing. Add Pluto TV or The Roku Channel for live programming, then check whether your library or university provides Kanopy or Hoopla. Use Plex and official YouTube channels to fill documentary, niche, and personal-media gaps.
That combination will not reproduce Netflix’s originals, interface, downloads, or ad-free experience. It can, however, replace much of the everyday movie, television, live-channel, and documentary viewing that makes a monthly subscription feel necessary.
