Tech backlash FAQ: Can you use the internet without Big Tech?

Yes—but only as a matter of degree. You can replace many high-impact services, avoid signing in for ordinary browsing, and move social or messaging activity to federated networks. A completely Big-Tech-free internet is not realistic for most people because connectivity, hardware, operating systems, hosting and many destinations remain interconnected. The practical goal is to reduce dependence where it matters most, while keeping enough reach and reliability for everyday life.

What “without Big Tech” can realistically mean

“Big Tech” is not one switch that can be turned off. Internet use is a stack of relationships: a network operator carries your connection; a device and operating system run your apps; a browser requests pages; search and social services help you find people and information; and remote servers host the content. Replacing one layer does not remove the others.

Think of independence as a spectrum rather than a purity test:

Level What you change What remains Best for
Client independence Use an independent browser or engine and privacy-conscious settings. The companies operating the sites you visit still control those sites. Anyone who wants a low-friction first step.
Account independence Choose providers with export tools, open protocols or self-hosting options. You still depend on an internet connection, hardware and some remote infrastructure. People concerned about lock-in and data portability.
Federated participation Join social or messaging networks made of independently operated servers. Your chosen server has administrators, policies and its own operational risks. Communities that value local control and network choice.
Self-hosting Run services yourself or pay a small operator to run them for you. Power, connectivity, software updates, backups and upstream providers remain necessary. Users willing to accept administration work for greater control.

There is no authoritative percentage showing how much of all internet use can be moved away from large technology companies. The useful question is instead: which dependency causes the most harm or lock-in for me, and can an alternative still reach the people and content I need?

Why total separation is difficult

Access and hardware are upstream dependencies

Your internet service provider, mobile carrier, modem, router, phone or computer and operating system sit below the services you choose. Even if every application were independently operated, you would still need a connection and a functioning device. A self-hosted service also relies on electricity, a network route, domain name systems and an upstream data centre or home connection.

Destinations may remain centrally operated

Changing browsers does not change who runs a newspaper, government portal, university site or video service. A privacy-oriented client can reduce tracking and account dependence at the point of access, but it cannot make an independently operated destination independent.

Social graphs create practical lock-in

Contacts, followers, group history and recommendation systems are often harder to move than files. An alternative is technically independent but socially unusable if nobody you need can be reached there. That is why interoperability—not just ownership—is the practical test of whether a switch works.

Replace the browser first

Mozilla’s 2025 policy recommendations argue that independent browsers and browser-engine developers provide meaningful choice in a consolidated ecosystem. An independent browser can change the client-side defaults for tracking protection, storage, permissions and updates without requiring you to abandon the entire web.

What a browser change does

  • It gives you a different browser vendor and, in some cases, a different engine from the dominant options.
  • It can block or limit third-party tracking, tighten cookie and permission controls, and separate browsing profiles.
  • It lets you visit ordinary sites without creating an account merely to open a page.

What it does not do

  • It does not remove the large companies that operate the sites you visit.
  • It does not make a logged-in service anonymous; the service can still associate activity with your account.
  • It cannot guarantee that every site works identically, because websites may depend on particular browser features.

A low-risk migration

  1. Install an independent browser such as Firefox from its official project site.
  2. Import bookmarks and passwords only after verifying that the new profile is protected with a strong device passcode and, where available, encrypted synchronization.
  3. Review site permissions for location, camera, microphone, notifications and persistent storage; deny anything a site does not need.
  4. Keep the old browser temporarily for sites that fail, then report compatibility problems or remove it once your normal tasks work.

This approach reduces dependence on a dominant browser ecosystem while preserving access to the same destinations. Search choice can be changed separately; the browser and the search provider are not the same layer.

Use federated social networks instead of one central platform

Federation means that many independently operated servers communicate through a shared protocol. The Internet Society’s 2025 explanation emphasizes that each server can set local moderation rules and operating policies. Mozilla has described projects such as Mastodon and Pixelfed as part of a promising direction for social networking outside profit- and control-driven technology firms.

What you gain

  • Choice of host: You can select a server whose rules, jurisdiction and community fit your needs.
  • Local governance: Moderation and community standards are not dictated by one global operator.
  • Network reach: Posts can generally be exchanged with users on other compatible servers.

What you still have to evaluate

  • Administration: A server owner can change rules, suspend accounts or shut down.
  • Reliability: Small projects may have fewer resources for uptime, backups, moderation and support.
  • Discovery: A distributed network may feel less unified than a single service, and communities can be fragmented.
  • Data custody: The server can normally access account data and content needed to operate the service; federation does not mean that no administrator is trusted.

Questions to ask before joining a server

  • Who operates it, and is there a clear code of conduct and moderation process?
  • How are backups, account recovery and software updates handled?
  • Can you export posts, media or account information?
  • What happens if the operator stops running the service?
  • Which other servers are blocked, and why?

Federation distributes control; it does not eliminate governance. Your choice of server is therefore a security, privacy and reliability decision, not just a sign-up preference.

Use Matrix for federated messaging

Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised, secure communications. Its stated design goal is that “People should not be locked into centralised communication silos, but instead be free to pick who they choose to host their communication without limiting who they can reach.” In practice, you choose a homeserver and use a Matrix client; that homeserver exchanges room and message data with other homeservers.

How the model differs from a single provider

  • You can choose a public homeserver, an organization’s server or one you operate yourself.
  • Your address identifies the homeserver, while conversations can include people hosted elsewhere.
  • Leaving one homeserver is possible in principle, but the exact migration experience depends on the client, room structure, account data and the destination server.

Check the homeserver, not just the app

The client is the visible application, but the homeserver controls account administration, retention, moderation and operational security. Read its privacy policy, acceptable-use rules, backup and recovery guidance, and any published status information. For sensitive conversations, confirm which encryption features are enabled and how device verification works.

Expect operational trade-offs

A well-funded host may offer better uptime and support; a small community host may align more closely with your values. Neither is automatically safer. Federation gives you alternatives if a host changes direction, but you still need a recovery plan and trusted contacts who can verify a new account.

Test an alternative by interoperability and portability

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s 2020 analysis of “competitive compatibility” explains why newcomers need a way to connect to established products while preserving privacy. An alternative that cannot exchange messages, links or files with the people you already know may be independent yet impractical.

Interoperability questions

  • Can you communicate with users on another server without both sides creating accounts on the same company’s platform?
  • Can outside users follow, reply to or share your public posts?
  • Are standard formats or documented protocols used, rather than a private interface that can be withdrawn?

Portability questions

  • Can you export contacts, messages, media, posts, calendars or files in a usable format?
  • Can you redirect people to a new address without losing your identity or history?
  • Are exports complete, or do they omit metadata, reactions, attachments and social connections?

Before moving, make a test export and open it outside the service. Save recovery codes, verify that media files are present and record which information cannot be transferred. Portability is only real when the exported data can be used elsewhere.

Browse without signing in—but understand anonymity’s limits

Mozilla’s 2025 policy work argues that people should be able to start browsing without logging in, while acknowledging the need to address abuse and age-assurance challenges. A page that loads without an account provides casual anonymity, not invisibility.

What can still identify or distinguish you

  • IP addresses and network-level logs can connect requests to a connection.
  • Cookies, local storage and login sessions can link visits over time.
  • Browser and device characteristics can contribute to fingerprinting.
  • Anti-abuse systems may require an account, a rate-limited challenge or another identifier.

Practical privacy habits

  1. Use separate browser profiles for work, personal accounts and casual reading.
  2. Do not sign in merely to dismiss a prompt; use a public view when the site permits it.
  3. Clear site data or use a temporary session when you do not need continuity.
  4. Assume that a public post, even on a federated service, can be copied or archived.

Privacy is a reduction in unnecessary collection, not a promise that no system can ever identify a visitor.

A staged plan for reducing dependence

  1. Map your dependencies. List the browser, search tool, email, storage, social accounts, messaging groups and work services you use. Mark which ones contain irreplaceable data or contacts.
  2. Start with the least disruptive layer. Change the browser and review permissions before moving accounts. This delivers privacy improvements without immediately breaking communication.
  3. Choose one federated community. Join a server with clear governance, export guidance and a realistic continuity plan. Keep your existing account until your key contacts can reach you.
  4. Test a messaging bridge. Create a Matrix account, verify devices with trusted contacts and use it for a small group before attempting a full migration.
  5. Export before you switch. Download account data, save recovery codes and check that files open independently of the original service.
  6. Announce and redirect. Tell contacts where to find you, keep the old channel during a transition and update public profiles with the new address.
  7. Review after a month. Check uptime, moderation, missing contacts, notification failures and backup status. Keep a fallback for services that have no workable interoperable alternative.

The unavoidable trade-offs

Choice Advantage Cost or risk
Centralised account Fast setup, broad reach and a single support channel. Provider control, lock-in and a single point of policy or outage failure.
Federated service Choice of host, local rules and the possibility of moving between communities. Fragmented discovery; host quality and policy vary.
Self-hosting Maximum control over configuration and data location. You administer updates, security, backups, abuse handling and recovery.
Anonymous access Less account information disclosed for casual visits. Rate limits, challenges or fingerprinting may still apply, and continuity is limited.
Open protocol Better prospects for interoperability and migration. Features may be less uniform, and implementations can differ in quality.

The trade-off is not simply privacy versus convenience. It is also reach versus control, reliability versus independence and portability versus the features that keep people inside a closed system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

“Nobody I know is there.”

Keep the old channel during a transition, invite a small group first and publish a stable address that can point to your current home. A network becomes useful when it connects to real contacts, not when an account merely exists.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.

  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

“The server disappeared.”

Choose hosts that document backups and account export, save your own copies regularly and maintain a second contact method. Federation does not guarantee that an individual server will survive.

“The alternative is harder to use.”

Separate setup friction from permanent complexity. Use a managed host if self-administration is not realistic, and automate backups and updates where the service supports it. Independence that cannot be maintained is fragile.

“A privacy tool broke a site.”

Use per-site exceptions rather than disabling protections globally. Keep a separate profile for services that require unusual scripts or account sessions, and remove the exception when the task is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I exported my data, but cannot use it.”

Exports can omit social graphs, ranking data, reactions or attachments. Inspect a sample before closing the account and retain the original files in a format you can open without the old provider.

What success looks like

A realistic endpoint is a diversified setup: an independent browser for everyday access; accounts chosen for export and protocol support; a federated social or messaging home with clear governance; and enough fallback capacity to recover when a provider changes policy or fails. You still use the wider internet, but no single company controls every layer that matters to you.

That is the meaningful answer to “Can I get off Big Tech?” You can reduce dependence substantially and make switching possible. You cannot remove every large-company connection without also giving up much of the reach, infrastructure and convenience that make the internet function.
