In the U.S., Greg Kohs’s 2008 Song Sung Blue documentary is listed as free with ads on YouTube. It follows real-life Milwaukee performers Mike and Claire Sardina, the husband-and-wife Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning & Thunder. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson’s 2025 film tells the same couple’s story as a scripted drama; it is a separate work, not the documentary.
Where to watch the original Song Sung Blue documentary
JustWatch’s U.S. listing, checked September 18, 2026, shows the 2008 documentary streaming free with ads on YouTube. Availability can change, so check the listing before watching: Song Sung Blue on JustWatch.
The same U.S. listing shows DVD and Blu-ray purchase options. At the time of that check, it displayed a $29.95 DVD and a $31.99 Blu-ray; those are listing prices, not guaranteed current prices. The documentary was available only on DVD for almost 20 years before its free YouTube availability, according to TechRadar.
What the original documentary follows
Kohs’s 85-minute U.S. documentary observes Mike and Claire Sardina as they perform Neil Diamond songs as Lightning & Thunder. Mike Sardina, Claire Sardina and Eddie Vedder are among its listed participants. Rather than recreating their story with actors, the documentary centers on the real people and their musical act.

The premise was compelling enough to suggest another film. In a December 2025 interview, 2025 adaptation writer-director Craig Brewer said he “completely agreed” that the making story of Kohs’s documentary could itself have been a movie. Brewer also praised the effort behind Kohs’s independent production: “I recognized the effort of what it is to be a low budget, DIY, nobody’s-giving-you-any-money, filmmaker, like Greg Kohs was.” Those remarks are reported by TechRadar.
How the documentary differs from the Hugh Jackman film
The 2025 Song Sung Blue is a scripted adaptation based on Kohs’s award-winning 2008 documentary. Craig Brewer wrote and directed it, with Hugh Jackman playing Mike and Kate Hudson playing Claire. Universal describes its story as the couple forming Lightning and Thunder, moving from dive-bar gigs toward hometown stardom, and facing tragedy while holding on to their love and music. TechRadar notes that the adaptation largely follows the documentary while taking creative liberties.
