From underground publishing to Ego Trip
Jenkins began publishing while still in high school, creating the graffiti zine Graphic Scenes & X-plicit Language. In 1992 he co-founded the hip-hop newspaper Beat-Down. Two years later, he and Elliott Wilson founded Ego Trip, a short-lived but influential magazine that documented rap culture with an underground sensibility.

Books and hip-hop history
Jenkins carried the irreverent, archival approach of Ego Trip into books. He co-authored Eminem’s The Way I Am and was associated with Ego Trip’s Book of Rap Lists, a compendium built around the debates, rankings and cultural memory that shape hip-hop fandom.

Why Jenkins’s work mattered
Jenkins moved fluently between scenes that were often treated separately: graffiti and independent publishing, national music magazines, artist-authored books and long-form documentaries. His projects preserved hip-hop history while allowing its artists and communities to define their own significance. The combination made him both a participant in the culture and one of its chroniclers.
