Joe and Anthony Russo are directing, Stephen McFeely is credited as writer, and the project is marked as being in production. Release plans and dates can still change before the film arrives.
The confirmed answer: Downey is playing Doctor Doom, not Iron Man
The casting is no longer just a rumor or fan theory. Marvel Studios announced Robert Downey Jr.’s return at the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation on July 27, 2024. The announcement identified his new MCU role as Doctor Doom and attached him to Avengers: Doomsday, with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct.
Disney’s current production page goes further by identifying the character as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. That distinction is important: Victor von Doom is a separate Marvel character from Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor Downey played throughout much of the Infinity Saga.

Why fans should not call this an Iron Man return
Downey’s casting naturally raises questions about Tony Stark. His performance as Iron Man made him one of the defining stars of the MCU, and Doctor Doom has occasionally been connected to Iron Man in Marvel Comics. But the confirmed movie information does not say that Tony Stark has been resurrected, transformed, replaced, or secretly revealed to be Doom.

None of those explanations has been established by the official sources currently available.

Doctor Doom’s relationship with the Fantastic Four
