Spoilers for the first three episodes of Season 5. “Premiere” here means the three-episode launch batch, not just Episode 1: Hulu released Episodes 1–3 together on September 9, 2025, then continued the season weekly. The opening mystery starts with the death of Lester, the Arconia’s beloved doorman, and quickly expands beyond the building’s familiar residents.
What happens to Lester in the Season 5 premiere?
Lester dies, and the initial explanation is that his death was an accident. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are not convinced. They begin investigating because the doorman was a familiar, valued part of the Arconia community, and the circumstances surrounding his death do not feel settled to them.
The premiere’s central contrast is established immediately: the trio is pursuing a personal, resident-centered loss, while the clues point toward a more powerful criminal world beyond the building’s everyday social life.
Episode 1: An accident ruling, then another death
Episode 1 ends with Lester’s death ruled an accident. That finding appears to close the immediate case, but it does not resolve the episode’s unease. Nicky Caccimelio is also found dead under mysterious circumstances, turning apparent closure into the start of a larger mystery.

The episode therefore leaves two questions in play: whether the accident ruling fully explains Lester’s death, and how Nicky’s death connects to the events around the Arconia. The launch batch does not offer a final answer to either.
Episode 2: Lester’s past and the elevator-crank clue
Episode 2 looks back at Lester’s life as an Arconia doorman and his marriage to Lorraine. The flashback brings familiar faces into that history, including Teddy Dimas and Sazz Pataki, and gives the mystery an intimate dimension: Lester is not merely the victim at the center of a puzzle, but someone whose relationships and years in the building matter.

New evidence raises the possibility that an elevator crank was used to stab Lester fatally. At this point, it is a possible weapon suggested by evidence—not a confirmed account of how he died. The distinction matters: the accident ruling and the new clue sit uneasily beside one another, rather than adding up to a solved case.
Episode 3: What is hidden beneath the Arconia?
By Episode 3, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel discover a secret underground casino beneath the Arconia. The hidden space changes the scale of the story: the building is no longer just a residence where neighbors conceal secrets, but a place connected to a concealed criminal network.
The episode closes with three wealthy mogul suspects close to the investigators. The premiere batch also establishes that police have been bought off by those behind Nicky’s murder. These developments frame a widening conspiracy, but they do not identify the season’s ultimate culprit or settle the full chain of events.

The season’s official setup expands the danger from old-school mobsters to billionaires and other powerful New Yorkers. Steve Martin described the evolving idea to ABC Audio this way: “Slowly we discover that there’s a new mob. And they are defined in a very contemporary way. It has nothing to do with the old mob.” The point is not simply that the trio has found a new suspect list; the source of power itself is shifting toward contemporary wealth and influence.
That change sits alongside the show’s familiar comic ensemble. Selena Gomez said Mabel is “exploring her independent side,” describing a character who is more solidified and confident. The opening episodes place that personal development against a case that reaches beyond the trio’s usual neighborhood-scale investigations.
How the three-episode launch fits the season
The opening batch moves from Lester’s personal history to the Arconia’s hidden spaces and then toward a citywide network of powerful suspects. Episode 2’s flashback gives the mystery emotional context; Episode 3’s casino recasts the building as part of a concealed underworld. In my reading, that expansion gives the launch a darker edge than a case confined to the building’s familiar residents, while preserving the shifting character interactions that anchor the series.
