From a disputed tournament final to a ladder match decided with outside help, Mankind and The Rock’s 1998–99 rivalry made its title story out of reversals, stipulations and abrupt consequences. This ranking covers televised direct singles matches documented in the feud chronology, with one later 1999 match included as a coda. The order is subjective: it weighs story stakes and payoff, how distinct each match’s format feels, the structure and finish, and how memorable the bout remains. CAGEMATCH scores are user ratings, not a professional consensus.
How this ranking is scoped
The central run begins with the WWF Championship tournament final at Survivor Series 1998 and carries through the February 15, 1999 ladder match. The list also includes a later SmackDown! singles match as a coda, rather than suggesting the feud ended in February. It is not a complete record of every house-show, tag-team or multi-person encounter. Match dates and outcomes follow the chronology in Online World of Wrestling’s Mick Foley profile; where available, CAGEMATCH’s Mick Foley match guide provides a secondary reference and user ratings.
One date needs care: the Foley chronology places the empty arena match on January 10, 1999, while CAGEMATCH lists January 26. The ranking uses January 10 as given in the Foley chronology and flags the discrepancy rather than treating the dates as interchangeable.
10. The Rock vs. Mankind — No. 1 contenders match, SmackDown!, September 2, 1999
This is a coda, not a chapter in the original title feud. The match ended in a double disqualification, and later that evening the two teamed to defend the tag titles against Triple H and Shane McMahon. That context gives the bout some value as a snapshot of their later alliance, but the singles match itself has less payoff than the title-centered run that precedes it.

9. Mankind vs. The Rock — WWF Championship match, Raw, February 1, 1999
Mankind defeated The Rock to win the WWF Championship, according to Foley’s chronology. That result gives the match real story importance, but the available record here does not establish a stipulation or distinctive match hook comparable to the feud’s more unusual bouts. It earns a place for its title consequence, not on an unsupported claim about its in-ring quality.
8. The Rock vs. Mankind — WWF Championship tournament final, Survivor Series, November 15, 1998
The tournament final is the feud’s starting point and one of its most consequential finishes: it put the championship in The Rock’s hands and set up the disputed outcomes that followed. The match’s importance is greater than its format’s novelty; the later stipulations give the rivalry more variety. CAGEMATCH displayed a 7.23 user rating when accessed in 2026. 7. Mankind vs. The Rock — WWF Championship match, Rock Bottom, December 13, 1998
The finish is the point: Foley’s chronology says Mankind made The Rock submit, but Vince McMahon reversed the decision, leaving The Rock as champion. The result made the title story feel unstable and gave the rivalry a clear reason to continue. CAGEMATCH displayed a 6.73 user rating in 2026. The match ranks below the later stipulation bouts because its chief distinction is the disputed outcome rather than a uniquely defined match format.
6. Mankind vs. The Rock — No-disqualification match, Raw, December 29, 1998
CAGEMATCH’s match guide lists a no-disqualification match on this date and displayed an 8.18 user rating in 2026. Foley’s short feud chronology does not include this entry, so the record available here is less complete than for the surrounding title matches. Its place in the ranking is deliberately restrained: the listed stipulation promises a different kind of contest, but the result and episode details are not established by the cited chronology.

5. Mankind vs. The Rock — Empty arena match, January 10, 1999
With no crowd around the ring, this match changes the atmosphere of the rivalry as much as its rules. Foley’s chronology records Mankind retaining the championship. The date is not consistent across the two references: CAGEMATCH lists January 26, while the Foley profile gives January 10. That conflict is why the date is identified by source rather than silently reconciled.
4. Mankind vs. The Rock — No-disqualification WWF Championship match, Raw, January 4, 1999
Mankind won the title on the first Raw of 1999 in a no-disqualification match, according to Foley’s chronology. The stakes and the stipulation work together: this is not just another disputed defense, but a decisive change in who holds the championship. WWE’s official listing describes it as the WWE Championship match on the first Raw of 1999: The Rock vs. Mankind — WWE Championship Match: Raw, Jan. 4, 1999.

3. Mankind vs. The Rock — I Quit match, Royal Rumble, January 24, 1999
The I Quit stipulation turns the contest into a test of whether either wrestler will say the words that end it. The Rock won the title, giving the match a major story payoff as well as a sharply defined format. CAGEMATCH displayed an 8.16 user rating in 2026. Its place near the top reflects the way the stipulation, title stakes and result converge rather than the rating alone.

The Foley chronology records a no contest. Unlike the I Quit match, where the endpoint is a spoken surrender, Last Man Standing makes endurance the defining question. That distinction helps the two bouts feel like separate chapters instead of repetitions of the same escalation. CAGEMATCH displayed a 7.77 user rating in 2026.

1. Mankind vs. The Rock — WWF Championship ladder match, Raw, February 15, 1999
The next night’s ladder match takes the rivalry’s title story into a visually distinct format and gives the immediate follow-up to the Last Man Standing bout its own consequence. Foley’s chronology says The Rock won the WWF Championship with Paul Wight’s help. The outside interference makes the finish part of the feud’s continuing chain of reversals, while the ladder stipulation supplies a different kind of spectacle from the prior night’s endurance contest. CAGEMATCH displayed a 7.75 user rating in 2026; the ranking puts it first for its combination of format, timing and title-story impact.
What makes the run worth revisiting
The strongest matches do different jobs: the Survivor Series final launches the title story, Rock Bottom complicates it, January’s no-disqualification and empty arena bouts vary the setting, and the Royal Rumble through February 15 stretch the feud across sharply different stipulations. No single score settles the ranking. The community ratings are useful as a reference point, but the ordering here is an editorial judgment about story, structure, and what each match adds.
