This curated selection brings together ten recognizable tracks, from Frank Sinatra and Earth, Wind & Fire to Green Day. It is not a chart or popularity ranking, and the songs use September in different ways.
Ten songs with September in the title
The titles below come from an AS.com editorial list published September 1, 2016. Its printed years are included as that source’s labels, not as independently verified release dates for every recording.
| Artist | Song | Year labeled by AS.com | September connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frank Sinatra | “September Song” | 1965 | September is named directly in the title. |
| Big Star | “September Gurls” | 1974 | September is named directly in the title. |
| Earth, Wind & Fire | “September” | 1978 | The month is the title. |
| Barry White | “September When I First Met You” | 1978 | The title connects September with a first meeting. |
| Neil Diamond | “September Morn” | 1979 | September is named directly in the title. |
| Miguel Bosé | “Septiembre” | 1983 | The Spanish word for September is the title. |
| Lou Reed | “September Song” | 1985 | September is named directly in the title. |
| Los Enemigos | “Septiembre” | 1990 | The Spanish word for September is the title. |
| Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash | “September When It Comes” | 2003 | The title makes September the subject of a future arrival. |
| Green Day | “Wake Me Up When September Ends” | 2006* | The title frames September as a period the speaker wants to pass. |
*AS.com labels Green Day’s entry 2006. Apple Music’s U.S. listing associates the track with American Idiot and displays September 20, 2004; these are different source records, so the date should not be treated as a single settled release year. Apple Music’s U.S. listing and Green Day’s official video identify the song and its album association.
Which September song fits your mood?
AS.com describes September songs broadly as tending toward nostalgia or melancholy, while some look toward hope and new beginnings. Those are useful listening cues, not rigid classifications: the title alone cannot tell you everything a song says about the month.

For romance or a memory of meeting someone
Barry White’s “September When I First Met You” makes a first meeting explicit in its title. Neil Diamond’s “September Morn” and the two different “September Song” recordings offer other title-led options when you want a more reflective or romantic direction.

For a somber or reflective listen
Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash’s “September When It Comes” are natural choices when the phrasing itself suggests waiting, return, or reflection. This is a mood-based way to navigate the list, not a claim that the songs share the same meaning.
Why Green Day’s song is a common search match
Green Day’s track is associated with American Idiot, and the band’s official video identifies it as a song from that album. Apple Music’s U.S. listing displays September 20, 2004. The older AS.com list prints 2006 for its entry, so cite the specific source and context when mentioning a date rather than merging the two records.

English and Spanish September titles
This selection includes two Spanish-language titles: Miguel Bosé’s “Septiembre” and Los Enemigos’ “Septiembre.” The remaining titles use “September.” If you are building a playlist from a search such as “songs with September in the title or lyrics,” these two entries broaden the title search beyond English. This article focuses on tracks whose titles name the month; it does not claim that all ten discuss September in the same lyrical way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a track for a playlist

- For a particular artist: the list spans classic pop and rock names, including Frank Sinatra, Big Star, Lou Reed, Neil Diamond, and Green Day.
- For a time-spanning mix: use the years printed by AS.com as a rough guide across several decades, while remembering that the list’s years are not all independently verified release dates.
- For a reflective theme: compare the titles “September When I First Met You,” “September When It Comes,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends”; their wording points to different kinds of memory and waiting.
