Dumont also set out how they wanted to be addressed: “For now, please only call me Nick if you’re cool (you know who you are). And if not, please refer to me by my professional name, Emma Dumont.” That distinction matters: they did not announce a change to their professional credit or ask everyone to use Nick.
How the news became public
On December 5, 2024, TMZ reported an update to Dumont’s Instagram bio and quoted a representative describing them as transmasculine and nonbinary, with Nick used among friends and family and Emma Dumont retained professionally. Out also reported the representative’s wording. The next day, Dumont confirmed their identity and name preference directly to the Los Angeles Times.
#1 Best Overall
On December 11, Them reported Dumont’s first public comments on the subject, given to Out. They called coming out to themself as trans “one of the longest challenges I’ve faced in my life” and “the most rewarding by a mile.” They said they loved being trans and were proud to share that when asked.
Which name and pronouns should readers use?
- Emma Dumont: Use this name for their acting career and professional credits, including Oppenheimer.
- Nick: Dumont said this is the name for friends and family, and asked people to use it only if they are among those they have invited to do so.
- They/them: Use these pronouns in narration, consistent with the pronouns reported alongside the Instagram bio update.
What does “transmasculine nonbinary” mean?
That is Dumont’s own description of their identity. Broadly, “transmasculine” can describe someone whose gender is closer to masculinity than femininity without identifying as a man within the binary. “Nonbinary” is a term for people whose gender does not fit within the binary of exclusively male or female. These general definitions provide context; Dumont’s own words are the most accurate description of their identity.
