Netflix began removing Basic for new and returning customers in 2023, expanded the policy in 2024, and now lists Basic as discontinued in at least some markets. Where the change applies, customers generally choose between the cheaper Standard with ads plan, the more expensive ad-free Standard plan, Premium, or cancellation. The exact result depends on country, account status and billing provider.
What Netflix is actually phasing out
Basic was Netflix’s former lowest-priced ad-free subscription. It is different from Standard with ads, which costs less but includes commercial interruptions and may not include every title. In markets where Basic is unavailable, the usual ad-free entry point is now Standard.

Netflix’s current plan documentation describes Standard with ads as offering 1080p video, two supported simultaneous devices and downloads on two supported devices. Standard is ad-free at 1080p, while Premium adds 4K/HDR, four simultaneous devices and more downloads. Features, taxes and prices vary by country. The phase-out timeline
- November 2022: Netflix launched its first ad-supported plan in the United States and other markets, initially calling it Basic with Ads. It was presented as an option alongside ad-free Basic, Standard and Premium. Netflix launch announcement
- October 2023: Netflix said Basic would be phased out for new and rejoining members in the United States, United Kingdom, Italy and Canada, with Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Australia and Brazil to follow. Netflix Q3 2023 shareholder letter

- 2025–2026: Country-specific notices and account changes have continued. There is no single confirmed worldwide cutoff date.
Is Basic gone everywhere?
No. Netflix sets plan availability and prices by country and can test different plans or prices in individual markets. A plan shown to one subscriber may not appear for another, even if their old subscriptions had the same name. Netflix information about country and pricing differences

The practical distinction is among customer types:
New subscribers
In affected countries, new customers normally cannot select Basic during signup. The lowest-priced Netflix option is generally Standard with ads.
Existing Basic subscribers
Netflix may let a legacy Basic account continue temporarily, send a notice requiring a plan choice, or apply a change at a specified billing date. The notice—not a general headline—determines the effective date and whether the account is moved, asked to upgrade, or canceled.
Returning subscribers
Someone who cancels may be unable to restart Basic later if the plan has been withdrawn for rejoining customers. Canceling is therefore different from simply declining a migration notice.

Partner-billed accounts
Apple, Google, mobile, broadband, television and other billing partners can have different plan eligibility and controls. If Netflix does not show a cancellation or change option, follow the Membership instructions or contact the payment partner. Netflix cancellation help
What happens when Netflix contacts you?
Read the account email or in-app message for these details:
- The date the change takes effect, often the next billing date.
- Whether Netflix offers Standard with ads, ad-free Standard and Premium, or says the membership will end.
- Changes to resolution, simultaneous streams, downloads and title availability.
- The new recurring price, including local taxes or currency differences.
- Whether the account is billed directly by Netflix or through a partner.
Do not assume every Basic subscriber is automatically moved to the same plan. Rollouts can differ by market, billing channel and account history.

Standard with ads is not simply Basic with commercials. Netflix says some programs are unavailable on the ad-supported plan; an unavailable title can show a lock icon. Resolution, supported devices, downloads, extra-member rules and live-programming ad behavior can also differ. A lock does not necessarily mean the title has left Netflix’s entire catalog.
What US subscribers should know about price

Why Netflix is doing this
Netflix gives two explicit reasons for advertising: an ad-supported option creates a lower consumer price, and advertising adds another revenue stream. The company linked the Basic phase-out with increased adoption of its ads and Standard plans. In 2024, Netflix said the ads tier represented more than 45% of sign-ups in its advertising markets; its Q1 2026 letter reported more than 60% and forecast approximately $3 billion in 2026 advertising revenue, roughly twice its 2025 figure. That forecast is a company projection, not a completed result.
A reasonable strategic interpretation is that removing an inexpensive ad-free tier gives Netflix more ways to monetize the same household: price-sensitive viewers can use ads, while viewers who refuse ads may pay for Standard or Premium. Simplifying the lineup may also reduce direct competition between a cheap ad-free plan and the ad tier. Netflix has not said that forcing upgrades is its sole motive.
How to choose
Choose Standard with ads if
- Your priority is the lowest Netflix bill.
- You can tolerate interruptions.
- Your regular shows and films are available on the ad tier.
- 1080p and two supported devices meet your needs.
Choose Standard if
- Ads are unacceptable.
- You want ad-free 1080p without paying for Premium’s extra capacity.
- Your household normally watches on no more than two supported devices at once.
Choose Premium if
- You have a 4K/HDR display and want compatible quality.
- More simultaneous streams or downloads justify the higher price.
Cancel if
- Neither ads nor the replacement price is acceptable.
- You do not need Netflix immediately and accept losing access after the paid period.
What to do now
- Open Netflix in a browser and enter the Account or Membership section.
- Record your current plan name and monthly charge.
- Read any migration email or in-app notice, including its effective date.
- Compare each offered plan’s ads, resolution, streams, downloads and title availability.
- Confirm the new price before selecting a replacement.
- If canceling, complete the process through Netflix or the billing partner and save the confirmation email.
- If Netflix is bundled with another service, check the provider’s terms before changing anything.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the change a new 2026 rollout when it began in 2023–2024.
- Assuming Basic disappeared worldwide on one date.
- Assuming every existing subscriber is automatically moved to one plan.
- Using an old US price as a current price in another country.
- Assuming the ad tier includes the entire Netflix catalog.
- Canceling directly with Netflix when a partner controls billing.
- Assuming a country move preserves the same plan; Netflix generally requires canceling and signing up again in the new country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep Netflix Basic?
Possibly, if your market and account still permit a legacy subscription. New and returning customers in affected markets generally cannot select it, so rely on the notice and options shown in your own account.
Is Standard with ads the same as Basic?
No. Standard with ads is a different plan with commercials, possible title exclusions and different device or download limits.
Will canceling stop Netflix immediately?
Usually not. Access generally continues through the end of the paid billing period, but canceling can remove your ability to rejoin on Basic.
Does the phase-out apply in my country?
There is no universal cutoff date. Check the plans displayed in your account and any country-specific Netflix notice.
