“Merry Christmas.” That was the first widely recognized SMS, sent in the United Kingdom on December 3, 1992. Engineer Neil Papworth transmitted it from a computer to a mobile phone used by Vodafone director Richard Jarvis, who received it at a company Christmas party.

The date matters: descriptions calling it “33 years ago” were accurate on December 3, 2025, the 33rd anniversary. The event itself remains December 3, 1992.

What did the first SMS say?

It said “Merry Christmas.” The short seasonal greeting was chosen as a simple, memorable demonstration that Vodafone’s Short Message Service system could deliver text to a handset. The account is documented by Interesting Engineering.

Who sent it, and who received it?

  • Sender: Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old engineer working on Vodafone UK’s SMS infrastructure in the Sema Group Telecoms context.
  • Recipient: Richard Jarvis, a Vodafone director.
  • Phone: An Orbitel 901 mobile handset.
  • Location and date: The United Kingdom, December 3, 1992.

It was sent from a computer, not another phone

The first recognized SMS was not a phone-to-phone text. Papworth entered the message on a computer connected to the network’s SMS infrastructure; Jarvis received it on the Orbitel 901. Early mobile handsets generally did not provide a practical way to compose outgoing messages, so the event was primarily a technical demonstration of network-to-handset delivery.

That distinction also separates the 1992 milestone from the later consumer habit of typing messages on a mobile phone. It was the first widely credited SMS, not necessarily the first text-like signal ever transmitted and not the launch of an already mature texting market.

What does SMS mean?

SMS stands for Short Message Service. It is a telecom service for sending short text messages through mobile networks. “Texting” became the everyday consumer term; SMS is the underlying network service.

Why were SMS messages so short?

SMS was designed for brief messages carried by early mobile systems, whose capacity and signaling resources were limited compared with modern internet messaging. The format became associated with a 160-character limit when using the original 7-bit text encoding, although encoding choices and concatenated messages can change how many characters fit in one message unit.

The constraint encouraged concise writing, abbreviations and new conventions for punctuation and tone. It was a characteristic of the original SMS format, not a universal limit for every later messaging platform.

How did the idea develop before 1992?

Finnish engineer Matti Makkonen is commonly credited with proposing the basic text-messaging idea in 1984. Friedhelm Hillebrand is associated with the reasoning behind the short-message length, after examining the typical size of brief written communications. European telecommunications standardization then turned the concept into a service that could be implemented across mobile networks. These roles are best understood as contributions to a broader standards effort rather than the work of a single inventor.

Why did texting take years to become popular?

The first transmission did not instantly create a mass market. Early mobile phones were expensive, carriers emphasized voice calls, and many handsets initially supported receiving messages more readily than composing and sending them.

Adoption accelerated as several conditions came together:

  • Handsets gained two-way SMS support.
  • Predictive-input systems such as T9 made keypad composition less laborious.
  • Prepaid service and lower messaging prices made frequent short messages affordable to more people.
  • Messages could move between different networks, making texting useful beyond one carrier’s customer base.

Together, those changes turned a network feature into an everyday social habit. Precise adoption totals and individual handset milestones vary by country and source, so they should not be treated as universal dates.

How SMS changed communication

SMS made communication asynchronous: people could send a thought without interrupting someone with a call, and the recipient could answer later. Short-form writing became routine, shaping abbreviations, punctuation, tone and expectations about response time.

Organizations also adopted SMS for alerts, authentication codes, customer service and marketing. Later app-based services built on the expectation that messaging could be immediate, portable and largely independent of a live voice conversation.

Is SMS obsolete?

No. Consumer conversations have shifted toward internet services such as WhatsApp and Telegram, which support media, group features and richer identities. SMS remains useful because it works across basic phone networks and does not require the sender and recipient to share the same app. It continues to serve notifications, one-time authentication and, in some circumstances, emergency communication.

What happened to the original message?

According to the reported account, Vodafone auctioned the first SMS as a non-fungible token in 2021, with proceeds directed to the United Nations refugee agency. The reported price was €107,000, described at the time as about $124,000. The NFT represented a digital artifact or record associated with the message; it was not the transfer of the original 1992 telecom event itself.
