Netflix added subtitle size and style controls to supported TVs and streaming devices in March 2023; broader controls had already been available through the web. Today, browser settings can include font, size, shadow and background color, while many televisions expose only size and style presets.
Use the instructions for your device below. Appearance settings are separate from choosing a subtitle track such as ordinary subtitles or SDH/closed captions.
What Netflix lets you change
Netflix’s current controls can include these appearance options:
- Font
- Size
- Shadow
- Background color
- TV or streaming-device style presets
Not every device offers every control. The web profile page normally provides the widest range, while TV interfaces generally provide size and style. Older devices may not display every option you select. Netflix describes these controls as applying to both subtitles and closed captions; see its accessibility guidance.

Appearance is not the same as a subtitle track
Changing the font or color changes the presentation, not the words supplied by the track. During playback, the Audio & Subtitles menu lets you choose a language and, when available, a different type of track.
- Subtitles generally show spoken dialogue.
- Closed captions or SDH can add speaker identification and descriptions such as “[door slams]” or “[music playing].”
If you do not want sound descriptions, select a dialogue-only track when the title offers one. Netflix began adding original-language, dialogue-only subtitles alongside SDH/CC for new titles in April 2025, starting with You season 5. Availability remains title-, language- and region-specific; it is not a visual-style setting. Read the announcement at About Netflix.

Change subtitle appearance in a web browser
This is the preferred route when you want more than a television’s basic presets. The setting belongs to the selected Netflix profile.
- Open Netflix in a web browser and open the Account page.
- Under Profiles, select the profile you want to edit.
- Select Subtitle appearance.
- Choose the font, size, shadow and background options you want.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on the viewing device, or resume playback, to check the result.
Because preferences are profile-specific, household members can use different designs by editing their own profiles. Netflix’s profile explanation is available in its profiles overview.

Change subtitles on a TV or streaming device
Netflix introduced TV subtitle customization in March 2023. On a supported television, game console or streaming player, the in-player controls usually expose Size and Style rather than the full browser set.
- Open the Netflix app and start a film or episode.
- Pause playback.
- Open the player controls at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Adjust Size and Style, then resume playback.
If there is no Settings icon, Netflix says that device does not support appearance changes for the selected subtitle language. Exit and reopen Netflix, or use the device’s Netflix menu to reload the app, if a saved change is not visible. TV expansion history is documented by Netflix’s accessibility announcement.

Change subtitles in the Netflix Android app
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Subtitle Appearance.
- Choose the appearance you want. The settings save automatically.
Android also provides Restore Default Settings on this screen. Netflix warns that changes made in the Android app apply only to titles watched on that Android mobile device; they should not be assumed to change the appearance on your television.
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
Netflix’s current Help Center does not give one shared in-app procedure for Apple devices and directs users to Apple’s device-specific instructions. Menus vary by device and operating-system version. If Netflix’s profile controls do not change the result, check the Apple device’s built-in subtitle and caption accessibility settings. Do not assume that an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV use identical menus.

Why the option is missing or looks different
- Unsupported device: Some TVs, players and older hardware do not support appearance changes.
- Fewer controls on TV: A connected device may offer only size and style even though the browser offers font, shadow and background controls.
- Language limitation: Netflix says appearance controls may be unavailable in some countries whose primary languages are Arabic or Hebrew, even when the profile uses another language.
- Old hardware rendering: An older device may ignore or fail to display some selected options.
- Android scope: Android app changes apply to viewing on that Android mobile device, not automatically to a TV.
- App refresh needed: Close and reopen Netflix, or reload it through the device menu.
- Track availability: A title may not offer the language, dialogue-only subtitles or SDH/CC track you expected. Open Audio & Subtitles during playback to see what is actually available.
Subtitle languages and accessibility tracks vary by title and region, as Netflix explains in its inclusion information.
Choose a readable starting style
No single design works for every viewer or scene. Use these as practical starting points:
| Starting choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Medium size with a shadow | You want a balanced default with little image coverage | Text can still blend into very bright or busy footage |
| Large size with strong contrast | You watch from a distance or have low vision | More of the picture may be obscured |
| Opaque or semi-opaque background | Scenes have changing colors or bright highlights | The box covers more image detail |
| Minimal or transparent background | You prefer an unobtrusive presentation | Letters can disappear over similar-colored scenes |
Reset subtitles that are too large or hard to read
Browser profile
Return to Account → Profiles → Subtitle appearance and select a smaller or more neutral-looking combination, then save.
Android
Open My Netflix → profile name → Manage Profiles → profile → Subtitle Appearance and select Restore Default Settings.

Device accessibility settings
If the text remains oversized, check the television, streaming player or phone’s own caption settings. Netflix notes that account and device font-size settings can combine and produce very large subtitles. Change one layer at a time so you can identify which setting controls the final result. Device changes may also affect other apps. See Netflix’s troubleshooting page for oversized subtitles.
