An animated GIF is one .gif image file containing multiple bitmap frames, timing instructions and optional looping behavior. A browser or image viewer displays those frames in sequence, making a GIF behave like a tiny silent flipbook—not like a conventional video.
GIFs are convenient for short, simple loops, but their indexed palette, lack of audio and limited controls make video, WebP, AVIF, APNG or SVG better choices for many projects.
What does GIF stand for?
GIF means Graphics Interchange Format. CompuServe introduced it in 1987 as a broadly compatible compressed graphics format. GIF87a was the original specification; GIF89a is the later revision associated with transparency, comments, application extensions and animation control data. The format’s history and structure are documented by the Library of Congress and the GIF89a specification.
Calling a GIF “a short video” is convenient but technically inaccurate. It is an image file that can hold several images and display them successively.

How an animated GIF works
- A video, screen recording or set of still images is divided into frames.
- Each frame is converted to an indexed-color bitmap.
- The file stores the frame data, delays and display instructions.
- A viewer renders the frames in order.
- The animation stops after a specified number of repetitions or loops continuously.
Frames may be complete images or only changed regions. Disposal instructions tell the viewer whether a frame replaces, restores or composites over the previous frame. GIF uses lossless LZW compression for the encoded data, but converting the source to an indexed palette can discard considerable visual information before compression occurs.
Animated GIFs have no audio track, adaptive bitrate, normal video scrubber, captions track or built-in play/pause and volume controls.
The technical limits that matter
Indexed color
Each frame or color table can contain up to 256 palette entries. That is adequate for icons, diagrams, flat illustrations and simple interface demos, but photographs and smooth gradients can show banding, posterization or dithering. Different frames can use local palettes, so “256 colors” does not mean that every frame must share one palette. See MDN’s image-format guide.
Recommended Free Tools
Basic transparency
GIF transparency designates one palette color as transparent. It does not provide continuous alpha transparency like PNG, WebP, APNG or AVIF, so antialiased edges can develop halos against a different background.
Size and dimensions
The format permits dimensions up to 65,536 × 65,536 pixels, but that is a format limit, not a sensible production target. Duration, dimensions, frame rate, palette size and full-frame changes can make an animation much larger than an equivalent video or modern animated-image file. Browsers generally need to download the animation before it can play effectively; performance guidance is available from MDN.

GIF strengths and weaknesses
| Characteristic | What GIF offers | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Broad support in modern browsers and common image software | Useful when a destination expects an image rather than a video |
| Color | Up to 256 indexed colors per frame or color table | Poorer for photographs and gradients |
| Compression | Lossless LZW encoding | Does not guarantee a small file or source-level visual fidelity |
| Transparency | One transparent palette color | Less flexible than full alpha transparency |
| Audio | None | Use video when sound, narration or music matters |
| Controls | Usually automatic playback and looping | No natural seeking, captions or volume control |
| Performance | Simple inline display | Long, large or numerous GIFs can burden downloads and memory |
When an animated GIF is the right choice
Good fits
- Short reaction animations and simple visual jokes.
- Brief, silent interface demonstrations.
- Small screen-recording snippets showing one click sequence.
- Line art, logos, icons and flat-color illustrations.
- Decorative motion where automatic looping is intentional.
- Messaging or publishing systems that reliably accept GIF but not video.
Use something else when
- The clip is long, photographic or high resolution.
- It needs narration, music, dialogue, captions, seeking or playback controls.
- The page is performance-critical or contains several simultaneous animations.
- Motion could trigger discomfort, distraction or a seizure risk.
- Fine text must remain readable at responsive sizes.
A useful rule is: if the content is really a video, publish video unless there is a specific reason to make it behave like an image.
How to make an animated GIF
From a video or URL with GIPHY
- Open GIPHY’s GIF Maker.
- Upload a supported image, GIF or video, or provide a supported URL.
- Trim the source to the useful moment.
- Add captions or stickers only when they remain readable throughout the loop.
- Export or upload the result, then review it on desktop and mobile.
- Check whether the result is public or private before sharing.
GIPHY’s documented desktop workflow lists JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV and WebM inputs and, for source videos in that workflow, a limit of under 100 MB and under 15 seconds. These are GIPHY-specific requirements and may change. A still source may produce GIPHY’s “This is a still image!” message rather than an animation.

In an image or animation editor
- Import video frames or individual images.
- Put each frame on its own layer or timeline position.
- Crop to the smallest useful canvas and remove unnecessary frames.
- Set frame delays and choose infinite or finite looping.
- Choose a limited palette and decide whether transparency is necessary.
- Export as GIF and test the file in more than one browser or viewer.
Adobe documents indexed-color, dithering, color-count and GIF-specific lossy controls in its Animate optimization guidance. Adobe Animate remains available but is in maintenance mode as of June 10, 2026: it receives support and security fixes, with no planned new features.
From a screen recording
- Record only the relevant area and keep the cursor visible when it carries meaning.
- Remove pauses and unrelated movement.
- Add a short introductory frame or caption if context is needed.
- Use modest dimensions and frame rate.
- Choose GIF only when automatic inline playback is valuable; use video for longer, text-heavy demonstrations.
Always include the actual written steps. Text remains searchable, translatable and usable when animation is disabled.
Do not upload confidential recordings to a third-party service without checking its privacy terms. The format itself does not grant rights to copyrighted film, television, game or photographic material used inside a GIF.

How to optimize a GIF
- Shorten it: remove setup and dead time.
- Crop it: eliminate unused canvas.
- Resize it: preserve only the dimensions needed for reading.
- Reduce frames: remove duplicates or near-duplicates while keeping important motion clear.
- Lower frame rate: use the slowest motion that remains understandable.
- Limit colors: increase the palette only when detail justifies the size.
- Dither carefully: it can hide banding but may add noise.
- Optimize changed regions: use disposal and difference-frame options when your encoder supports them.
- Test alternatives: compare WebP, AVIF, APNG or video before accepting a large GIF.
More colors, frames and dimensions can improve appearance while increasing download cost. Transparent edges should be exported against the destination background or moved to a format with full alpha transparency.

Use meaningful alternative text, reserve layout space with dimensions and describe the information conveyed by the motion:
<img
src="/images/example.gif"
alt="A cursor opens the Settings menu and selects Dark mode"
width="640"
height="360"

The HTML img element supports GIF; see MDN’s reference. For genuinely decorative motion, use an empty alternative and hide it from assistive technology:
<img src="/images/decorative-loop.gif" alt="" aria-hidden="true">
For modern delivery, offer alternatives with a GIF fallback:
<picture>
<source srcset="/media/demo.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="/media/demo.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="/media/demo.gif"
alt="A cursor opens the Settings menu and selects Dark mode"
width="640" height="360">
</picture>
Test the target browsers, devices, email clients or social platforms; a fallback does not guarantee identical rendering everywhere.

Accessibility and safer animation
Describe what changes and why it matters, for example: “The pointer clicks the profile icon, opens Settings and selects Dark mode.” Do not rely on motion alone for instructions.
The W3C’s G152 technique discusses stopping blinking or movement after a limited number of cycles, commonly within five seconds when appropriate. It is guidance, not a universal requirement that every GIF stop at exactly five seconds.
MDN’s seizure-disorders guidance warns that GIF timing is encoded in the file. Avoid rapid flashing, repeated high-contrast changes and page-dominating motion. For risky or essential animations, provide a still image and user-activated video:
<button type="button" aria-controls="demo" aria-expanded="false">
Play demonstration
</button>
<img id="demo" src="/images/demo-still.png"
alt="The pointer opens Settings and selects Dark mode"
width="640" height="360">
GIFs cannot carry audio captions. Use captioned video and, where needed, a transcript for spoken explanation.

| Format | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GIF | Short, silent, simple loops with broad compatibility | 256-color palette, often large, no audio or controls |
| WebP | Modern web animation with better compression and transparency | Fallback may still be needed for some destinations |
| AVIF | Performance-sensitive delivery with high color depth | Browser and platform fallback strategy matters |
| APNG | Lossless animated graphics and transparency | Less convenient for some social and messaging workflows |
| MP4/WebM | Long, photographic, narrated or captioned motion | Requires video handling rather than simple image behavior |
| SVG/CSS/JavaScript | Responsive icons, diagrams and interface transitions | More implementation complexity and unsuitable for arbitrary video |
MDN’s format guidance generally favors WebP, AVIF or APNG for modern animation while recognizing GIF’s simplicity and compatibility.

Common problems and fixes
Grainy or posterized output
The source exceeds the palette. Reduce gradients, use careful dithering, simplify artwork or switch to WebP, AVIF, APNG or video.
An enormous file
Duration, canvas, frame rate, color count or noisy full-frame changes are excessive. Crop, resize, remove frames, lower the frame rate, use changed-region optimization or export video.
Incorrect looping or ghosting
Inspect loop metadata and frame-disposal settings. Test finite and “forever” options in multiple viewers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTransparency halo
Palette transparency and mismatched edge mattes cause halos. Export against the destination background or use full-alpha WebP, APNG or AVIF.
Unreadable text
Increase the canvas, hold important frames longer, add captions outside the GIF or use video. Repeat the instructions as normal text.
Platform rejection
Dimensions, file size, duration and content rules vary by service. Check the destination’s current requirements; a file accepted by one platform may fail on another.
A quick decision checklist
- Does the message need sound?
- Is the content photographic, detailed or longer than a brief loop?
- Does it need captions, seeking, pause or volume controls?
- Is the download size acceptable on mobile connections?
- Could flashing or automatic motion create an accessibility problem?
If sound, length, controls or accessibility concerns dominate, choose video or a still image with user activation. Choose GIF when a short, silent loop must behave like an image and broad compatibility outweighs file size and color fidelity.
