M3GAN’s eerie hallway dance became a defining social-media moment before the film reached theaters in January 2023. The routine’s stiff robotic isolations, sudden cartwheel, dramatic pose and turn toward horror made it instantly recognizable—and easy to remix.
This retrospective organizes the trend by what makes each version fun to watch: faithful choreography, costume work, technical dancing, comedy, unusual locations, group timing and alternate audio. It is a historical guide to the original 2022–2023 challenge, not a claim about TikTok’s current biggest trend.
What is the M3GAN dance?
The original sequence appears in the film’s trailer and combines playful movement with menace. M3GAN sways with mechanical precision, throws loose, whip-like arm gestures, launches into an aerial/cartwheel movement and finishes in a leg-up pose before the imagery turns threatening. The trailer helped the routine circulate before most viewers had seen the movie.

Fan videos do not all reproduce the complete choreography. Some borrow only the arm isolations, the cartwheel, the beige costume silhouette or the contrast between an apparently cute character and sudden horror.

PopSugar’s account of the trend describes the trailer reveal, the fan response and the dance’s distinctive movement vocabulary.
Why the routine became a TikTok template
- A clear visual hook: viewers can identify the movement within seconds.
- An unusual tonal contrast: a childlike android dances with pop-star confidence before the scene becomes threatening.
- Modular choreography: creators can imitate a short arm phrase without attempting the entire sequence.
- Remix-friendly audio: the same movement works with different sounds, edits and comedic timing.
- A strong silhouette: the wig, dress, tights and controlled posture make a costume recognizable even in a short clip.
- Release-year amplification: trailer publicity and fan posting reinforced one another ahead of the January 2023 theatrical release.
Historical coverage reported the #m3gandance hashtag at hundreds of millions of views in January 2023. That figure is a time-stamped description of the original moment, not a current TikTok measurement.

Because individual TikTok posts can be deleted, made private, muted or region-restricted, a responsible roundup should verify each original post immediately before publication. The categories below are the most useful way to choose what to watch rather than presenting an unranked gallery.

| Category | What to look for | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Most faithful recreation | The recognizable arm sequence, timing, pose and transition into menace | Closest to the trailer’s visual joke |
| Best cosplay | Beige outfit, wig, makeup, posture and character presentation | Makes the performer read as M3GAN before the dance begins |
| Best technical performance | Clean isolations, controlled floorwork, flexibility and a trained aerial element | Rewards movement quality rather than costume alone |
| Funniest version | A strong reaction, prop gag or deliberately ordinary setting | Uses the cute-to-threatening contrast for comedy |
| Best unexpected location | A clearly staged gym, store, domestic room or other everyday setting | Turns the familiar routine into a visual surprise |
| Best group performance | Several performers matching timing or forming a visual pattern | Creates impact without requiring every dancer to attempt a stunt |
| Best alternate-audio edit | A sound whose beat or lyrics changes the scene’s meaning | Shows how adaptable the template became |
Use labels such as “most faithful choreography” or “best costume recreation” as editorial judgments. They are not objective global rankings, and historical hashtag totals do not prove that a particular clip is currently the most watched.
Notable styles from the original fan wave
Faithful costume recreations
The strongest costume versions reproduce more than the dress. Wig shape, tights, makeup, posture and restrained facial expression help sell the character. A creator who matches the silhouette and movement can make a short clip legible even without dialogue.
Technically impressive dancers
Some performers emphasize the isolations, timing, flexibility and floorwork instead of trying to imitate every cinematic cut. A cartwheel or other aerial element should be treated as trained dance technique, not a beginner challenge.

Cosplay-led performances
Cosplay versions build a complete character presentation around the dance. Univision highlighted fan recreations including Kausha Campbell and Jersey Virago LIVE; those examples show how the trend moved beyond a simple arm imitation into makeup, wardrobe and performance persona.

The joke works especially well when the ominous routine appears in an ordinary environment. A gym, shop, sports venue or living room can supply the punchline, provided the performance is clearly staged and does not obstruct people or create a hazard.
Alternate sounds
Historical examples paired the movement with sounds including Bella Poarch’s “Dolls,” Taylor Swift’s “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” and Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.” TikTok audio availability changes by country and licensing status, so a sound label should be checked on the live post rather than assumed from an old compilation.

Group versions
Groups can reproduce M3GAN’s synchronized, uncanny quality through spacing and timing. These performances are often more accessible than solo acrobatics, but participants still need a clear, non-slip floor and enough room to move.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who created the original routine?
Kylie Norris choreographed the sequence, while Amie Donald physically performed M3GAN’s dance and stunt work in the film. The idea reportedly arrived late in development, after the sequence was conceived as a moment in which M3GAN would dance to music. Them’s interview with Norris provides background on the choreography, while SYFY’s explanation discusses how the scene developed.

That distinction matters: Donald is the performer of the filmed movement, and Norris is credited as choreographer. Fan TikToks are creator recreations, not additional official M3GAN footage.

How to find more M3GAN dance videos
- Search TikTok for
M3GAN dance,#m3gandance,M3GAN cosplayandM3GAN challenge. - Open the original creator’s account instead of relying on a repost or compilation.
- Record the handle, post date, audio label and whether the account is public.
- Check that the post loads in the audience’s intended country, especially if it will be embedded.
- Recheck every selected URL on publication day. Posts can disappear, become private, lose audio or become region-restricted.
A January 19, 2023 YouTube compilation can help identify the historical shape of the trend, but a compilation is not reliable proof of original TikTok attribution.
If an embed is blank or requires a login, provide the creator handle and a descriptive caption, then direct readers to the creator’s profile and #m3gandance. That fallback keeps the article useful without presenting a repost as the original.
Want to try the dance?
- Begin with the arm and body isolations at a slow speed.
- Practice only on a clear, non-slip surface with enough overhead and lateral space.
- Leave out the cartwheel unless you have suitable training, flooring and supervision.
- Use a fake prop for any theatrical reveal; never bring a real knife or weapon-like prop into a public place.
- Keep children away from unsupervised aerial attempts, and do not frame a minor as a stunt performer.
- Check TikTok’s current music licenses and community rules before posting.
For filming, a phone tripod and light can help, but place equipment outside the movement path and weight a lightweight stand. A template can polish an edit without teaching choreography or guaranteeing reach. CapCut’s M3GAN dance template page is one editing option; its availability and features can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to judge a “best” version
- Recognizability: the clip clearly references M3GAN.
- Execution: signature movements are controlled and performed safely.
- Originality: the creator adds a costume detail, setting, prop, edit or narrative twist.
- Watchability: the idea is understandable without extensive explanation.
- Attribution: the original account can be identified.
- Availability: the post remains public and viewable for the intended audience.
- Rights and safety: the publisher can embed or link it appropriately, without encouraging dangerous imitation.
This approach avoids confusing official film footage, promotional performances, fan recreations and third-party reposts. It also avoids claiming that a historical clip is still viral without current, direct verification.

The Bottom Line
The M3GAN dance remains memorable because a few precise movements—robotic arms, a sudden aerial beat and a threatening pose—can be adapted to costumes, jokes, groups and new sounds. Watch by category, credit the original creators, and treat the acrobatic and weapon imagery as performance elements rather than instructions.
