Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch put worldwide iOS and Android daily active users at about 775,000 four weeks earlier and roughly 2.7 million on October 17, while estimated daily installs rose from fewer than 200,000 to about 300,000. The timing is consistent with Vibes helping the app, but the available evidence does not establish that Vibes alone—or even primarily—caused the increase.
The numbers behind the reported surge
The figures come from Similarweb estimates cited by TechCrunch, not from a user-count disclosure by Meta. They represent combined iOS and Android activity worldwide.
| Metric | Earlier level | Later reported level | Comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily active users | About 775,000 | About 2.7 million | Roughly four weeks, ending October 17, 2025 |
| Daily installs | Under 200,000 | About 300,000 | Same general period |
| Daily installs one year earlier | About 4,000 | — | October 17, 2024 comparison point |
Using the reported daily-active-user figures, 2.7 million is approximately 3.5 times 775,000—about a 248% increase by arithmetic. That percentage is a calculation from the rounded figures, not a separately published Similarweb percentage.
The same report said Meta AI’s worldwide daily active users were up 15.58% as of October 17, while Similarweb estimated declines for ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity during the comparison period. Those competitor figures are modeled estimates, not company-reported totals.

“Daily active users” and “daily installs” describe different things. Installs measure acquisition; DAU measures activity on a given day. Neither reveals retention, satisfaction, revenue or how many people used Vibes specifically.
What Meta’s Vibes feed introduced
Meta described Vibes as an early-preview feed of short-form, AI-generated videos available inside the Meta AI app and on meta.ai. Users could browse clips, generate videos from ideas, remix existing videos, add music, change visual styles and share the results with friends and followers. Meta said the feed would become more personalized over time.
- Discovery: Users can open a stream of videos instead of starting with an empty chatbot prompt.
- Creation: A prompt can produce a new short video.
- Remixing: Existing clips can be adapted rather than recreated from scratch.
- Distribution: Creations can be shared, including through Meta’s broader social ecosystem.
- Cross-platform exposure: Meta said Instagram users could tap through a Meta AI video and remix it.
That design represents a strategic shift from a conventional question-and-answer assistant toward a content-discovery and creation product. It combines passive browsing with active prompting and places short-form AI video alongside Meta’s established social-media formats.
Why the timeline matters—and what it does not prove
The reported sequence is clear:
- September 25, 2025: Meta announced and began rolling out Vibes.
- September 30, 2025: OpenAI announced Sora 2 and a new Sora app.
- October 17, 2025: Similarweb’s reported snapshot put Meta AI at approximately 2.7 million daily active users.
- October 20, 2025: TechCrunch published its account of the Similarweb analysis.
The increase followed Vibes’ rollout, so a connection is plausible. But “after” is not the same as “because of.” The data is an observational estimate rather than a controlled experiment: there is no disclosed comparison group showing what Meta AI activity would have been without Vibes.

Several explanations can fit the same spike
Vibes may have changed the app’s reason to return
A scrolling feed can encourage repeated sessions more readily than a blank chat screen. Remixing and sharing may also create feedback loops: a video gives someone a reason to open Meta AI, and a shared result can bring another person in. These are plausible product effects, not feature-level measurements from the reported dataset.
Meta’s own promotion is difficult for outside measurement to see
Facebook and Instagram could have surfaced Meta AI or Vibes to existing users. Similarweb’s search and advertising estimates would not necessarily capture promotion delivered inside Meta-owned services. That distribution advantage makes the app’s growth difficult to compare directly with an AI startup relying on external discovery.
Sora 2 created contemporaneous AI-video attention
OpenAI launched Sora 2 and its app five days after Vibes. People interested in AI video may have tried several products, and people unable to access Sora may have looked for alternatives. The report did not demonstrate that Sora activity drove Meta AI installs; it is a competing explanation for overlapping attention.
Sora is no longer a current consumer-app alternative. OpenAI says its Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, in its discontinuation notice. That later change does not alter what might have influenced the October 2025 spike, but Sora should now be described as a historical competitor or possible contemporaneous catalyst.

General interest and app-store visibility may have overlapped
AI-video launches, press coverage and app-store exposure arrived close together. The reported figures cannot separate those effects from Vibes itself.
What the reported data cannot tell us
- How many people opened the Vibes feed.
- How many watched, generated or remixed a Vibes video.
- Whether new users came for video, chat, image generation, search or another Meta AI feature.
- Whether the higher DAU level lasted beyond the October 17 snapshot.
- Whether installs converted into retained users.
- Whether users found the product useful or merely entertaining for a short period.
- Whether activity shifted from Facebook or Instagram rather than representing entirely new engagement.
- Whether the growth produced meaningful revenue or improved content quality.
Without later comparable independent measurements or Meta disclosures, the October snapshot cannot establish durable growth or long-term product success.

The episode suggests—rather than proves—that consumer AI adoption may depend partly on familiar media habits, not only on model capability. A feed gives people an immediate activity when they do not know what to ask. Generated clips can demonstrate a product’s abilities while also serving as entertainment, and remixing lowers the barrier to creation.
The trade-off is that rapid distribution can outpace quality and moderation. A networked remix format may increase reach while producing repetitive or low-value material. Likewise, more sessions can indicate stronger habit formation, but they do not by themselves demonstrate greater utility.

Meta’s ability to promote Vibes across Instagram and Facebook could make a standalone AI app feel less standalone in acquisition terms. That ecosystem funnel may be strategically important, while also making attribution opaque to outside analysts.
The defensible conclusion
Meta AI’s app experienced a substantial estimated rise in worldwide iOS and Android daily activity and installs in the weeks after Vibes launched. The timing makes Vibes a credible contributor, especially because the feed added browsing, generation, remixing and sharing to the assistant. However, Similarweb’s modeled app-level data does not show that Vibes caused the increase, that it was the main cause, or that the growth persisted. Meta promotion, broad AI-video interest and the contemporaneous Sora 2 launch all remain plausible contributors.
The strongest evidence-based description is therefore: Meta AI surged after Vibes appeared, but the available numbers support an association—not a single-feature causal verdict.
