No. “Harry Potter by Balenciaga” was a fan-made AI/deepfake concept by the creator known as demonflyingfox, not a verified Balenciaga campaign or Warner Bros. production. The short video, covered by Futurism on March 28, 2023, recast familiar Harry Potter characters as models in a glossy, unsettling luxury-fashion advertisement.

What the video showed
The clip was a fashion-commercial montage rather than a new Harry Potter scene or conventional trailer. It placed recognizable characters in an exaggerated Balenciaga-style world of luxury clothing, electronic music, rapid edits and ominous, dystopian imagery. The visual language drew on 1980s advertising and high-fashion editorials, making the strange premise immediately legible.
Harry, Snape and Dumbledore were among the figures transformed. Futurism described Snape as shifting from a robe-wearing professor into a model in a leather jacket and turtleneck. Dumbledore appeared in a broad-brimmed leather hat and dark sunglasses. The humor and unease came from the collision of children’s fantasy iconography with adult luxury branding.

Who made it?
The video was credited to the online creator demonflyingfox, whom Futurism described as a Patreon creator. No verified legal name, location or production team is established by the available coverage.
Futurism also reported comments from demonflyingfox through an interview with Dazed. In that account, the creator said they pursued combinations that felt unexpected but still intuitive, and considered Harry effective in a colder, adult setting. The concept was reportedly related to an earlier Harry-in-the-Yakuza idea. Those remarks should be understood as the creator’s explanation of the concept, as relayed by Futurism.
How the illusion was built
The defensible description is AI-assisted production, not a known one-click process. The finished piece appears to combine several elements:

- Visual transformations that placed those figures in high-fashion clothing and settings.
- Synthetic or deepfaked voices resembling members of the original cast.
- Human decisions about shot selection, pacing, music, editing and ad-style assembly.
Futurism said the voices were deepfaked or trained to resemble the original cast. That report does not establish which voice model was used, what data it relied on, whether any actor participated, or whether the lines were made from recordings of the performers. The exact image-generation software, prompts, face-swapping tools and editing workflow have not been documented in the available source, so naming a particular AI product would be speculation.
Why it felt convincing
The video’s force came from recognition and stylistic coherence more than flawless realism. Viewers already knew the characters, their costumes and their voices. The fashion styling supplied a clear visual rule, while music and fast cuts encouraged the eye to accept imperfect frames as part of an intentional commercial aesthetic.
- Instant recognition: Harry Potter references and luxury-fashion cues work within seconds.
- Consistent art direction: Dark clothing, dramatic poses and editorial lighting make disparate generated shots feel like one campaign.
- Synthetic familiarity: A voice that resembles a known performance can be persuasive even when its emotion or timing sounds slightly uncanny.
- Short-form editing: Quick transitions leave less time to inspect unstable faces, hands or identities.
- Surreal brand language: Balenciaga’s association with deliberately unusual fashion imagery makes an impossible crossover seem visually plausible.
A polished montage can therefore look more technologically advanced than it is. Individual frames may be persuasive while continuity, facial identity and emotional performance deteriorate under close inspection.

It was not an official Balenciaga advertisement
The available reporting identifies the work as a creator-made AI/deepfake reinterpretation styled as a Balenciaga ad. It does not report that Balenciaga commissioned, released or approved it, and it does not identify Warner Bros., J.K. Rowling or the actors as participants. “Balenciaga ad” describes the format and visual reference, not the campaign’s ownership or authorization.

A viewer who encounters a clipped version without context could reasonably mistake the style for an official collaboration, which is why clear AI and fan-made labeling is important.
What the video does—and does not—say about AI video
The clip appeared during the March 2023 surge of synthetic celebrity and public-figure imagery. Futurism discussed it alongside the widely circulated AI image of Pope Francis in a white puffer jacket. That cultural timing helps explain the attention, but it does not show that the two works used the same tools or technique.

The video demonstrates that AI imagery, synthetic voices and conventional editing could produce a compelling short-form illusion. It does not prove that the same process could independently make a feature film. A full movie would require stable identities across hundreds of shots, continuity, acting, narrative structure, sound design, rights clearance and extensive human supervision.
“AI-made” also does not mean automatic. The concept, selection of usable generations, corrections, sequencing, music and final publication all involve human judgment. Fashion advertising is unusually forgiving because stylization, rapid cutting and surrealism can conceal artifacts that would be unacceptable in a continuous dramatic scene.

- Trademark and brand identity: It uses the Balenciaga name and a recognizable luxury-fashion advertising vocabulary.
- Right of publicity: Synthetic voices or likenesses resembling actors may be regulated differently across jurisdictions.
- False endorsement: Viewers could infer approval from a studio, fashion house or performer when none has been reported.
- Commercial context: A fan parody, editorial post, monetized video and paid advertisement can present different risks.
- Disclosure: Identifying the work as AI-generated or AI-assisted helps prevent confusion about who performed, approved or sponsored it.
Whether any use is lawful depends on facts such as jurisdiction, purpose, platform, monetization, degree of transformation and applicable exceptions. The available reporting does not resolve those questions.
Claims that should not be inferred
- The actors did not necessarily record the new dialogue; the reported description is synthetic voices resembling the cast.
- The creator’s budget is not documented. A YouTube commenter’s estimate of “less than 10 bucks” is not a production-cost fact.
- Futurism reported that Elon Musk replied with two fire emojis. That records a reaction, not an endorsement of the creator, legality or commercial value.
- The clip does not identify the exact AI models, prompts, training data or amount of manual post-production.
The lasting significance of “Harry Potter by Balenciaga”
The video became memorable because it made a complicated technical idea instantly understandable: familiar fictional and celebrity identities could be moved into an entirely new visual world, complete with voices and commercial styling. Its achievement was creative synthesis, not proof of autonomous filmmaking.
For anyone sharing or embedding it, the accurate label is simple: a March 2023, fan-made AI/deepfake fashion concept by demonflyingfox, styled as a Balenciaga advertisement and not identified as an official campaign.
