Google Play may now show a “Where to watch” card when you search for a movie or TV show in the Play Store. The card can point to streaming, rental or purchase providers and may offer to install an app you do not have. It is useful as a quick provider shortcut, but it does not reliably answer the most important follow-up questions: what the title costs, whether it is included in your subscription, or whether it is available in your country.
The presentation is being rolled out and may vary by title, region, account and Play Store version. Google has offered related entertainment discovery in Play for years, so this is best understood as a refreshed or more prominent search experience rather than an entirely new capability.
What Google Play’s “Where to watch” card does
Open the Google Play Store, search for a film or series, and you may see a card associated with that title. It can list apps or services reported to offer the programme through one or more access models:
- Streaming with a qualifying subscription
- Renting an individual film or episode
- Buying a film, season or episode
- Opening a provider app already installed
- Installing a relevant app that is missing from the device
Android Central’s November 15, 2025 report showed The Last of Us associated with HBO Max, YouTube TV and Prime Video. That is an example of the reported interface, not a permanent provider list: catalogues and rights change by market and over time. (Android Central, November 15, 2025)

The card’s practical value is that it connects title search with app discovery. Instead of remembering a provider, finding its Android listing and installing it separately, you can move from the title result to the relevant service in a few taps.
How to try it
- Open the Google Play Store on an Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the Search tab or search field.
- Enter the exact name of a movie or TV show.
- Look for a result labelled “Where to watch.”
- Review the services shown for that title.
- Tap a service to open it, or install its app if the card offers an install option.
- Inside the provider, verify the title, season or edition, plan requirement and price before starting playback or paying.
Labels and card placement can differ by Play Store release, country, account and title. If a film has a common name, add its release year, lead actor or director to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong result.
What the card does not establish
A provider appearing in the card means that Google has associated the title with that service. It does not prove that you can watch it at no additional cost.

Prices and subscription terms
In the interface observed by Android Central, the card did not show rental prices, purchase prices or subscription fees. It also did not provide IMDb ratings or a direct YouTube viewing link. This limitation was reported for that rollout and should not be treated as a guarantee that every future version or market will behave identically. (Android Central)
A listing may refer to a title included in a subscription, a separate rental or purchase, a premium channel add-on, or a live-TV package. Services can also change which plan carries a programme. Open the provider’s title page and check the terms before subscribing or entering payment details.
Country and catalogue differences
Streaming rights are territorial. A title may be available in one country but not another, or may move between services after Google’s catalogue information was updated. A TV service may carry one season, the latest episode or a particular channel package rather than the complete series.

Device and account restrictions
An install prompt does not guarantee compatibility. Device support, parental controls, supervised or family-account settings, and provider sign-in requirements can prevent installation or playback. A service may also require playback on its website rather than in the Android app.
Is this really a new Google feature?
The search card is new in its reported form, but Google’s underlying idea is not. On March 27, 2018, Google described Play Movies & TV and Play Store integrations that helped users find services offering a programme for streaming, rental, purchase or subscription viewing. (Google, March 27, 2018)

Google Play compared with dedicated discovery services
| Need | Google Play card | Dedicated aggregator |
|---|---|---|
| Find a likely provider quickly | Strong when the card appears | Strong |
| Install the Android provider app | Direct route may be offered | Usually indirect |
| Compare rental and purchase prices | Reportedly limited in the observed interface | Usually stronger |
| Filter by country or provider | Must be verified in the provider | Often a central feature |
| Track catalogue changes or set alerts | Not established for this card | Often available |
| Manage a broad watchlist | Not established for this card | Usually available |
JustWatch (justwatch.com/us) and Reelgood (reelgood.com) are better suited when you need provider filtering, price comparison, country-specific availability or watchlist tools. Google Play is more convenient when you already know the title and simply want the app that may carry it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the card may not appear
- The rollout has not reached your account, country or Play Store configuration.
- The title is not indexed, is misspelled or has multiple versions.
- Google’s catalogue does not contain a current provider match.
- The title is classified differently, such as a season, episode or live channel.
- The provider does not expose usable catalogue information for that market.
- Your device, account controls or app compatibility prevent the associated service from being shown or installed.
There is no documented universal Play Store version requirement for this specific card. Updating Play Store and Google Play services may be sensible general maintenance, but it cannot guarantee access to a staged feature.

How to verify a result before you pay
- Confirm the exact film, series, season or edition.
- Open the listed provider rather than relying only on the Play card.
- Check whether the title is included in your current plan or requires an add-on.
- Compare the displayed rental or purchase price with other legitimate providers.
- Confirm that the title is licensed in your country and available now.
- Check that your device supports the provider app and playback method.
Do not infer a free trial, free-with-ads access or subscription inclusion from a listing alone. Avoid unofficial “free movie” APKs: they can create licensing, privacy and malware risks and are not legitimate alternatives to the providers identified by Google Play.
Google Play discovery is separate from content you already bought
If you previously rented or purchased a film through Google, finding a third-party provider in the Play card is a separate task. Google’s support documentation directs users to their Google TV or YouTube libraries, depending on the device and platform, to access content bought or rented through Google services. (Google Play Help)
Bottom line
Google Play’s refreshed “Where to watch” card is a useful shortcut from a movie or TV search to relevant streaming apps. Its strongest job is provider and app discovery, not price comparison or entitlement checking. Treat every result as a starting point: verify the exact title, plan, price, country rights and device support in the provider before subscribing, renting or buying. For those decisions, a dedicated service such as JustWatch or Reelgood remains more informative.
