Netflix’s U.S. paid-sharing rollout began on May 23, 2023, and the one-household rule remains in effect. People who live with the account owner can keep using the account under its normal limits. Someone who lives elsewhere generally needs a separate account or an eligible extra-member slot. Netflix’s current U.S.-dollar pricing lists an extra member at $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads—added to the owner’s qualifying subscription, not a replacement for it.
Netflix’s 2023 U.S. announcement described the original $7.99 price. The current distinction between ad-supported and ad-free extra members appears in Netflix’s official pricing information.

What Netflix actually changed
Netflix did not prohibit every form of sharing or every instance of simultaneous viewing. Its rule is based on residence: an account is intended for people who live together in one Netflix Household. Routine use by someone at another address is no longer covered simply because that person knows the password.
Household members may continue using separate profiles on the same account, subject to the plan’s device limits. Netflix defines the household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the subscriber watches Netflix; a profile is not a second household. When the U.S. rollout began
Netflix announced the U.S. expansion on May 23, 2023. It followed paid-sharing tests in 2022 and earlier international rollouts, including the company’s broader February 8, 2023 announcement (Netflix announcement). The policy is now an ongoing account rule, not a newly introduced 2026 change.

These are the U.S.-dollar figures listed in Netflix’s help information; taxes may apply, and prices, features and eligibility can vary by country or billing arrangement. Extra members are unavailable on ad-supported plans, and some partner-billed or package accounts do not offer the option.

What the $7.99 extra-member fee includes
The $7.99 price is for an ad-supported extra-member membership. Netflix also lists an ad-free extra member at $9.99. In either case, the original account owner purchases the slot and remains responsible for payment.
- A separate login and password
- One profile with personalized recommendations, viewing history and settings
- Use from outside the owner’s Netflix Household
An extra-member account is more limited than a standalone account: it has one profile and cannot create additional profiles. If the viewer needs several profiles, higher video quality or more simultaneous devices, Netflix directs them toward a separate account (Netflix guidance).

What the combined bill looks like
The add-on is charged on top of the owner’s plan. Before tax, the listed prices produce these illustrative totals:

These totals are arithmetic combinations of Netflix’s listed prices, not separate quotes from Netflix. The extra member must activate the invitation in the same country in which the owner created the account, and overseas territories or partner billing can affect eligibility.

Choosing between an extra member and a separate account
An extra member makes sense when
- The owner wants to keep paying for the person at another address.
- The owner already has an eligible Standard or Premium plan.
- The viewer needs one profile and accepts the selected ad tier.
- Both people are in the same account-creation country.
A separate account is usually better when
- The owner has Standard with ads or another ineligible plan.
- The account is billed through a carrier, cable provider or bundle that does not support extra members.
- The viewer wants control of billing, multiple profiles or a different plan.
- The viewer may move to another country.
- Upgrading the owner’s plan plus the add-on costs more than subscribing independently.

- Kids profiles cannot be transferred.
- A PIN-protected profile may require removing the PIN first.
- The profile email address may need to be removed.
- The primary profile cannot be transferred to an extra-member account.
- An existing extra-member profile cannot simply be transferred again in the same way.
Netflix accounts can contain up to five profiles, but an extra-member account is limited to one (profile limits).
Travel is different from permanent out-of-household use
A legitimate household member can watch while traveling on a phone or computer, or sign in on a hotel or rental-TV. If Netflix cannot verify the device, it may offer a temporary access code sent by email or text. The code expires after 15 minutes (temporary-access instructions).
For a second home or another location visited regularly, Netflix advises connecting from the primary household and opening Netflix there at least once a month, then repeating the process at the second location (second-location guidance). Temporary verification is not a permanent-sharing workaround.
Fixing an “outside the household” message
Television or streaming device
- Select Update Netflix Household from the message, or open Get Help or Settings.
- If shown, choose Troubleshoot This TV.
- Scan the QR code with a phone or tablet connected to the same home Wi-Fi as the TV.
- Select Get Code when prompted, scan the new QR code and choose Start Watching.
Phone or computer
- Choose Watch Temporarily.
- Select Send Email or Send Text.
- Enter the four-digit code, then select Submit Code.
- If the link opens Netflix’s home page, request a new code because the previous one may have expired.
If the request is unfamiliar
Review recently active devices, sign out anything you do not recognize and change the password if necessary. Netflix’s account tools show devices active during the last 90 days (device-management guidance).

For a move within the same country, update the Netflix Household. U.S. and Canadian customers may also need to update billing information for correct tax treatment. A move to another country generally requires canceling and signing up again; the currency, price, payment methods and catalog can change (Netflix’s moving guidance).
