Misa Hylton is a fashion stylist and creative whose work helped define hip-hop and R&B artist style from the 1990s onward. She styled performers including Jodeci, Mary J. Blige and Lil’ Kim, founded the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy in 2012, and is the mother of Justin Combs, her son with Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Hylton is a New York-based fashion stylist and creative whose career has centered on shaping how musicians present themselves. Rather than treating clothing as decoration, she has described styling as an interpretation of hip-hop culture: a way to translate music, identity and street fashion into an artist’s public image.

How did Misa Hylton become known in fashion?
She began styling artists as a teenager
British Vogue reports that Hylton began climbing the ranks of celebrity dressing at 17, after her then-boyfriend Sean Combs introduced her to emerging hip-hop artists. Her early work placed her inside a music scene where artists’ clothes could help establish a distinct identity as powerfully as a video or performance.

In the PBS documentary The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion, Hylton recalls meeting Combs at about 15 and beginning to date him soon afterward. She also recounts working with him to pitch a more distinctive look for Jodeci at Uptown Records, including combat boots and hoodies. Her work gave artists recognizable visual identities
Hylton’s credits include styling Lil’ Kim for her 1999 MTV Video Music Awards performance and Mary J. Blige’s “Not Gon’ Cry” video. British Vogue also credits her with creating a custom MCM look for Beyoncé’s “Apesh*t” film at the Louvre. The same profile names Foxy Brown, Faith Evans, 50 Cent and LaLa Anthony among her clients. Mary J. Blige’s early videos show how Hylton’s approach worked over time: Hylton has recalled evolving Blige’s looks while retaining hip-hop elements. In a later interview, she discussed that work and their creative relationship. Watch the interview.
Hip-hop fashion was part of the message
Hylton’s account of developing Jodeci’s image helps explain why her work matters beyond individual outfits. Styling could signal that an artist belonged to hip-hop while distinguishing that artist from other performers. As CFDA’s interview describes it, music and style influenced one another; a look could become part of how audiences recognized and understood the artist.

What is the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy?
Hylton founded the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy in New York City in 2012, according to CFDA’s 2019 profile. That source also described her at the time as MCM’s Global Creative Partner. These are historical details from that interview; they do not establish the Academy’s current course offerings or her current relationship with MCM. CFDA’s 2019 profile.
Her public comments also reflect how the fashion profession has changed. In the CFDA interview, Hylton said social media and technology gave stylists more opportunities to showcase and promote their work. She connected that visibility to a broader concern: brands drawing inspiration from Black culture should hire people able to speak directly to its sources.

What is Misa Hylton’s relationship to Diddy?
Hylton and Sean “Diddy” Combs were partners and are the parents of Justin Combs. Hylton’s recollection of their meeting and early work together appears in the PBS documentary as her own account. A federal sentencing submission filed on Combs’s behalf on September 22, 2025, describes their relationship as lasting approximately 1989 to 1994 and identifies Justin as their son.
