Marc Rebillet did not let Google’s AI write an entire song on its own. During the Google I/O 2024 pre-show on May 14, 2024, he used Google’s experimental MusicFX DJ to generate instrumental material, then selected, sampled, looped, arranged, and performed it in real time.

What happened at Google I/O

Rebillet performed at Shoreline Amphitheatre in California as part of the Google I/O 2024 pre-show. His entrance—from an oversized coffee cup in a brightly colored Google I/O robe—matched the irreverent style of his usual live shows. The production combined motion design, generative visuals, live effects, and AI, according to Silent Partners Studio.

The musical performance followed Rebillet’s familiar format: vocals, looping, MIDI controllers, audience interaction, and rapid layering. The new element was a prompt-driven system that supplied additional instrumental ideas while he performed.

How MusicFX DJ was used

Coverage identified the live tool as MusicFX DJ, an extension of Google’s experimental MusicFX system. It could generate instrumental sections from text prompts and layer or mix different musical elements.

Audience members helped choose instruments from a menu. Reported combinations included a viola with an 808 hip-hop beat, and later djembe, Persian tar, and flamenco guitar. Rebillet generated material one element at a time, routed the results into his sampler, and combined them with his own playing and singing. 9to5Google’s account of the demonstration describes the performance in detail.

MusicFX DJ, Music AI Sandbox, and Lyria are not the same thing

Google’s wider announcement used three related but distinct names:

  • MusicFX DJ: The visible experimental tool associated with Rebillet’s live demonstration.
  • Music AI Sandbox: Google’s broader collection of experimental tools for generating instrumental sections and transforming sound.
  • Lyria: Google DeepMind’s generative-music model, presented as part of the company’s larger music-AI research and development.

Google connected Rebillet’s work with collaborations involving Wyclef Jean and Justin Tranter, saying that artists were helping inform its development of generative-music tools. That broader announcement is available on Google’s blog. The available reporting does not establish that Lyria directly generated every sound heard during Rebillet’s stage performance.

Was the performance fully AI-generated?

No. “AI-assisted performance” is the more accurate description.

The software generated some instrumental material, but Rebillet still controlled the prompts, instrument choices, timing, sampling, arrangement, looping, vocals, improvisation, and audience interaction. The result was not an autonomous AI song delivered without human intervention. It was a human-led live set that used generated audio as one source of material.

An academic analysis of the presentation also questions how central AI was to the overall performance, noting that conventional live equipment and technique remained important. That caveat matters: a visually prominent AI demonstration does not mean that every musical moment came from the model.

What did Rebillet actually endorse?

Rebillet’s performance supports a narrow interpretation of the word “champions.” He appeared to endorse experimentation with AI as a creative collaborator and treated the system as a source of raw musical ideas. During the demonstration, he reportedly remarked, “The machine is good.”

That does not establish a comprehensive position on copyright, training data, authorship, labor, or replacing musicians. The evidence supports a practical endorsement of a musician-controlled workflow—not a manifesto arguing that AI should take the place of performers.

Why the appearance attracted attention

Google placed an unconventional improvisational artist inside one of its largest technology showcases. Rebillet made an abstract process—prompting a model for sounds—visible and entertaining. Instead of presenting AI as an invisible system producing a finished track, the demonstration showed a performer choosing, rejecting, reshaping, and combining machine-generated material.

That framing also contrasted with the backlash to Apple’s iPad Pro advertisement, which depicted creative tools being crushed together. Some coverage interpreted Rebillet’s performance as the opposite image: technology integrated into a creative process rather than portrayed as destroying it. That is useful context, but there is no evidence that Rebillet explicitly staged the performance as an anti-Apple statement.

The limits of the demonstration

A live showcase demonstrates speed and interactivity, but it does not prove that a music model consistently produces original, artistically satisfying, or commercially usable material.

  • Control: Text prompts generally offer less precise control than MIDI, a sampler, a synthesizer, or recorded instruments.
  • Fit: Generated material may not match a performer’s tempo, key, rhythm, or arrangement.
  • Reliability: Live use depends on generation speed, network access, and system stability.
  • Ambiguity: A prompt such as “flamenco guitar” does not guarantee culturally precise or stylistically authentic music.
  • Attribution: The person prompting and arranging the output is not necessarily the sole source of the musical material.
  • Rights: The performance did not resolve disputes over training data, consent, stylistic imitation, ownership, or licensing.

These issues apply beyond Google’s tools. They are central to the broader debate over whether generative systems should be treated as instruments, collaborators, production utilities, or competitors to human musicians.

The larger idea: machine suggestion, human authorship

The most interesting part of Rebillet’s appearance was not that an AI system could produce an instrumental loop. Sampling, looping, sequencing, and collaborative improvisation already have long histories in electronic music.

The significant experiment was the workflow: a performer requested musical possibilities, judged the results, and incorporated selected material into a live arrangement. The machine supplied suggestions; Rebillet supplied taste, timing, context, performance, and structure.

That makes the Google I/O appearance both a genuine creative demonstration and a carefully staged product showcase. It showed one possible role for generative music technology without proving that AI can replace musicians, settle authorship disputes, or independently create a finished artistic performance.

Google’s official video of the event is available on YouTube. Availability and naming for experimental Google music tools can change, so the demonstration should be understood as a record of what was shown at Google I/O 2024, not as a guarantee of current access.
